Heiser's Enoch Commentary

I recently bought Heiser's Logos version of Enoch, and it is the best version I have found. I have three different books by different authors, and the Heiser version is way easier to understand. I try to buy all of my books through Logos, because I can click on the reference material and better understand what I'm reading. I find Enoch to be extremely interesting, and I wanted to make a forum post for discussing the text with anyone else who is reading this too.

I will start. I would like to discuss how the names of the 20 Watcher angels (the ones who were set in charge of ten other angels who rebelled), are seemingly related to their function. I find this even more interesting, because I wanted to know for ages, what the relationship was between the Watcher angels, and the planets. From what I gather, there are specific angels assigned to specific heavenly bodies and heavenly functions. It is also interesting because there are several ancient (and not so ancient) religions that appear to worship different planets (Saturn, Jupiter etc.). The Heiser version of Enoch goes in to detail about what each of these 20 angel names mean (I think there was a discrepancy where only 19 were actually named, but I forgot about the reason for this). The other version I have read did not go into detail about the names and their meanings. As we all know, words matter a lot in the spiritual realm.

I haven't spent a lot of time on the watchers/planets. But have spent a lot of time on Enoch, mainly the earlier writings.

I'm curious … what are the other Enoch versions you considered … and why not quite so good? I use primarily Hermeneia, Charlesworth and Charles.

Hello, I have read a few different versions of 1 Enoch, but I wouldn't say they weren't as good as the Heiser version, but I would say that they didn't go into as much depth as the Heiser version. For instance, I pretty much just glanced right over the part about how the oceans and lakes were obedient to God, but the Heiser version points out that these sections point out how the fallen watcher angels are accused of changing God's calendar, by not keeping in line with what God wanted them to do. I'm guessing that the angels responsible for moving the sun/moon etc. changed their timing or orbits to change the 360-day Enoch calendar year.

I also just like the fact that the reference material pops up on the Logos version, and that makes understanding the subject matter easier for me. I try to purchase all my books from the Logos app for the sake of easy study and quick referencing the footnote text by clicking the link.

I'm very very interested in learning about where we are in the prophetic timeline of things, but I realize that this is probably a fool's errand.

Have you tried out the Logos AI assistent? Agree, fool's errand on timelines, but pursueing timeline discussions might be good.

Yes, I do use the AI assistant a lot. As far as timelines go, one of the missing books of Eden (I read three of them and can't remember which one) says that in 5500 years, we will be restored from the fall in the garden, unless our sin prolongs the timeline. Is this a direct reference to The Day of the Lord? Return to Eden? The final judgment of the angels? I don't know, but I found that interesting.

The First Book of Adam and Eve in The Lost Books of the Bible, by Rutherford Hayes Platt. Chapter 7, second sentence. I read this on my Kindle, as I couldn't find it on Logos. I think you can read it for free online somewhere as well. I also read the Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (The life of Adam and Eve), but these books are different from the Platt version. Only the Rutherford Hayes Platt version talks about the 5500 years sentence and then redemption (IIRC). The other books in the R.H. Charles book does not have this information. I read them all.

And indeed, several refs to 5,500. Though Charlesworth views the Struggle of Adam and Eve with Satan, as 5th or 6thc, cognate to Life of Adam and Eve. But several parallels to Enoch.
