Things that I'd still love to see.

1. An "x" on individual tabs like in other tabbed programs. The "x" on the edge of the pane should be for closing the pane.
2. A right-click context menu when clicking on the blank part of a pane to close that pane.
3. The ability to select phrases and send them to one's preferred English language dictionaries... eg. "Son of Man"
4. The ability to set up a "My Passage Guide" which overrides the default Passage Guide... http://community.logos.com/forums/p/871/7522.aspx
5. The same parallel resource functionality as in v3. The presence of a drop down box to chose parallel bibles / commentaries. The presence of arrows to cycle through such resources.
6. Multi-column layout for reading view
7. Legible sigla in NA27 and BHS
8. Custom icons for shortcuts on the toolbar.
9. The ability to update a saved layout with the current program layout through the right-click context menu.
10. With Dave Hooton. Separation of priorities from My Library. I'm sure this could be done by reusing the Library code but getting rid of extraneous fields etc. Prioritisation needs to be easier.
11. Get rid of the insane left side of the New Tab.... http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1021/8240.aspx
12. The ability to turn off pericope guessing
13. The ability to chose the standard behaviour of the passage search bar from the home page. I would like to set it to just run passage guide. (But, I would only use it if the latest addition of the information window and text comparison tool were dropped)
14. The ability to sync computers over a home network (as in iTunes 9)
15. The ability to tag, rate, and change the abbreviated titles for resources from the main library window without opening the information pane; The ability to tag books in the information pane of the actual resource.
16. The "Cited By" tool needs improvement... http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1183/9495.aspx
17. An explanation for the way in which search results are "Ranked"
18. Search results "Ranked by Book" with the book results collapsible.
19. The ability to export a reading plan to a calendar file.
20. Consistency in the placement of items in the right click context menus. (copy, Power Lookup, etc.)
21. A close button for the resource information panel in My Library
22. The ability to unlink all resources.
23. For the Power Lookup tool to not be set to follow when triggered by a word or bible reference.
24. To provide more than five lines of information in the Information Tool when hovering over a Gk word: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1321/10573.aspx
25. Give us a bible reference in the Passage Guide!
26. The ability to download program updates separately from resource updates.
27. Real information about the resources which need downloading.
28. Access to information about which resources have been updated - which I should have but do not.
29. Change the command from "autoupdate now" to "udate now"
30. System Ranges for Bible searches which do not assume that the user is protestant. http://community.logos.com/forums/p/2293/17342.aspx
31. More size options for images rather than just fit and actual size.
32. Passage Guide sections which operate like in v3.

Hmmm, now I know what happens when I accidentally hit "Post" instead of "Quote" and then cancel the post. It still posts what was sent even if the post wasn't completed.
Damian,
Great fairly comprehensive list. I like just about all the
suggestions ("just about" because some are about issues I don't use
enough to know). I would like to second the following.Damian McGrath said:12. The ability to turn off pericope guessing
This slows my system and generally isn't very useful since I know what I want to study.
Damian McGrath said:15. The ability to tag, rate, and change the abbreviated titles for resources from the main library window without opening the information pane; The ability to tag books in the information pane of the actual resource.
I would especially like this from the resource itself. I am often reading a resource, would like to makes these updates and can't without going through the library and the various steps involved. A quick change from the Info button on the resource seems fitting.
Damian McGrath said:18. Search results "Ranked by Book" with the book results collapsible.
The full list is very overwelming, enough so that I never use the "Ranked by Book" view. I would like them collapsed by default for a quick overview of the books, with my preferred books showing first, then I can expand books which may be useful.
Damian McGrath said:25. Give us a bible reference in the Passage Guide!
Yes, Yes, Yes. There should be a reference link to open a Bible as in L3. This really needs to be there since it is the most important reference in studying the passage. The others should all be cut before that one (not that I want the other options removed).
Damian McGrath said:26. The ability to download program updates separately from resource updates.
The more control the better. There should be a special warning whenever any type of update is about to happen that will require a reindex or other lengthy, system intensive procedure.
Damian McGrath said:27. Real information about the resources which need downloading.
This would help in knowing which resources to download first to set priorities on limited download ability.
Damian McGrath said:32. Passage Guide sections which operate like in v3.
Here is my order of preference for how these sections would work:
1. Each one can be individually customized to be expanded/collapsed by default
2. User can chose to be expanded/collapsed by default
3. Collapsed by default
It currently takes my computer forever to run the passage guide & generally finishes my most desired section (commentaries) last. I usually end up closing sections as soon as they finish loading since I don't want them. It would be great if they didn't run in the first place. (I know they can be totally removed from the passage guide and I have removed a few, but there are many I would like to have available, but not run unless I open them.

Agree, though I have reservations about 1 & 2 (sufficient space), 9 (not fussy about specific layout), 13 (don't use Home), 32 (happy with My PG + Add, especially if it becomes default PG).

Space should not be an issue. It's possible to make the "x" a hover or make it appear upon selecting that tab. This is how a number of programs deal with the issue. For me, Logos should emulate other tabbed programs. All of these, to my knowledge, place the "x" on the tab itself. The "x" disappears when the tab shrinks to a certain size,
Re 2, space is not an issue here. I constantly right click on the blank space to no effect. I just seems logical to offer the opportunity to close the pane from the blank part of the pane.

I'd love of My Passage Guide became the default.

Rob,
currently, there is no Ranked by Book. There is ranked which I do not really understand but which offers hits from the same resource all over the place. There is by book which is alphabetical.

Damian,
I agree with almost all of these, especially those below.
Damian McGrath said:1. An "x" on individual tabs like in other tabbed programs. The "x" on the edge of the pane should be for closing the pane.
Agreed. A rather large group of users are used to tabbed browsers, Opera, Firefox, IE7&8 all use them and close their tabs the same way. We are used to having the X on the tab itself. Whether superimposed or however, I'm in favor of the X on the tab. yes it takes up a bit more room, but it doesn't need to be huge. Make it small and "backgroundish" then when we hover over the tab itself, make it bright pink for all I care, but make it work the way everything else works and the way everyone is going to expect it to work.
Logos: you'll save yourself bunches of emails and calls, "How do I close a tab?"
Damian McGrath said:2. A right-click context menu when clicking on the blank part of a pane to close that pane.
And all the books on the pane too? Sounds great!

Damian McGrath said:6. Multi-column layout for reading view
That would be quite nice. I've got a 22"widescreen monitor which means reading view is massive and frankly unusable. But if I could break it into say six reflowing columns than I could read amazingly fast. For speed reading I've found a column of about 10 words width on a steady scroll speed (if I'm scrolling) means I can pour through material much faster than normal.
Or speed it up until it's insanely fast and thus transparent even on an 8086 2.2Mhz machine. (ah, memories.)Damian McGrath said:12. The ability to turn off pericope guessing

Yes yes yes yes yes! Please make this customizable. And please give us the chance to make a different layout the standard. Right now it's three panels 1 long and two stacked. I'd much rather make three long panels the standard (|1|2|3|).
Damian McGrath said:14. The ability to sync computers over a home network (as in iTunes 9)
While I love the idea, I wonder if it could be implemented without losing the cloud backup. I like the cloud backup. But I would indeed love it if local P2P were the standard. As an example sync.live.com does a great job of this.
ICS? yes please. Even vcal. Not all of us use Outlook. Many of us would rather pull off our toenails than use outlook (well I would anyway) but it's the default and only offering for export. Yuck.Damian McGrath said:19. The ability to export a reading plan to a calendar file.

Thomas,
I'm thinking of a drop-down box with some scaled sizings: 25%, 50%, 75% as well as "Fit and "Actual size" (or 100%). On my netbook, "fit" is so small that it's like a thumbnail. Actual size for some images, esp maps, is unwieldy.

Dave, in Google Chrome, when the tabs reach a certain minimum size, the "x" is not visible until the tab has focus.
There are ways to deal with this issue which other programs have found.

Good list. I don't think there is anything there I would disagree with. But in particular for me these are absolute musts in no specific order:

Tried to narrow the absolute's down to 5 but couldn't get there... one more that is an absoulte that Damian didn't mention is improve bible explorer media seciton...too many irrelevant hits... e.g. we don't need every media referencing Jesus showing up. Only media resources direclty related to the passage or a parallel passage should show, expanded results can be accessed from biblical people, places and things. BE should be a quick entry point not an exhaustive list.

There are a few "absolute musts" that I know I missed. I went through my 500 posts in the Beta forum (excluding the ones from the last two days) and put them in list form.
There have been many good suggestions (including your one on improving Bible Explorer) which I failed to comment upon. They therefore didn't show up in my search.

I was talking about the placement of the "x". I can't think of one tabbed program that doesn't have it on the tab itself. But all of them manage to provide means not to interfere with very small tabs (due to a large number of open tabs).
My problem with "Close all Tabs" for the pane is that you need to click on a tab. I keep clicking on the blank space after the tabs and I remember when the prgram first came out, I kept clicking on the "x" at the end of the pane itself.

I don't want to labour the point, but I had hoped you would see from the picture that :-
- the tabs are so small that it would be difficult/ugly/impossible to place an x such that you would not close a tab when you intended to open it (as you've just described) + I don't want the minimum tab size changed; and
- there is no blank space

Updated.
1. An "x" on individual tabs like in other tabbed programs. The "x" on the edge of the pane should be for closing the pane.
Like Google chrome:
When all we have are images, the image for the active tab can be replaced by an 'x' which highlights on focus (as Chrome deals with it)
5. The same parallel resource functionality as in v3.
a) The presence of a drop down box to chose parallel bibles / commentaries.
b. The ability to cycle with arrows through parallel resources.
b) The ability to set parallel resources separate from prioritisation
6. Multi-column layout for reading view
7. Legible sigla in NA27 and BHS
These are almost impossible to see:
8. Custom icons for shortcuts (or text labels) on the toolbar.
The new tab for WBC Mark 8:1 - begins with 35 volumes of Hermeneia
12. The ability to turn off pericope guessing
13. The ability to chose the standard behaviour of the passage search bar when run from the home page. I would like to set it to just run passage guide, not EG. (But, I would only use it if the latest addition of the information window and text comparison tool were dropped and with only 3 bibles)
14. The ability to sync computers over a home network (as in iTunes 9)
15. The ability to tag, rate, and change the abbreviated titles for resources from the main library window without opening the information pane; The ability to tag books in the information pane of the actual resource.

27. Real information about the resources which need downloading.
28. Access to information about which resources have been updated - which I should have but do not.
29. Change the command from "autoupdate now" to "udate now"

38. Home Page: ability to remove items from the ribbon. Better - ability to remove the ribbon altogether...
39. Ability to select and drag multiple titles in Collections and in Hiding Resources.
40. An Abbreviated command to run Passage Guides and Exegetical Guides: eg. PG Rom 1:1-4; EG Tit 1:1-4
41. An optional section for the Passage Guide providing outlines of the pericope or chapter: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1639/12648.aspx
42. Better information in the commentary section of the Passage Guide: use Abbreviated Titles; Show full book info with hover as in the library. http://community.logos.com/forums/t/2717.aspx
Not this:
But this:
43. Ability to click and drag a pane and not just a tab.

Wow. Great list! Me, too...
In addition, I'm still looking for help to get to CBV from a Word processor. Ideally, it'd be a smart tag. Acceptably, it could be an icon in the system tray. I do not want to have to go back from where I'm working in the word processor to Logos to initiate the CBV. I do it too often for that to be other than disruptive.
On the other hand, beta 8 is looking awesome, in general!

Chris, I really can't see the point of the left hand side of the New Tab. It presents resources with the same metadata as the one being opened. What's the value? In my opinion, it slows things down.

Book B: 2 articles, ranked 80 and 70.
Which book ranks highest?
How about Book C, with 50 articles with hits, all ranked in the 60's?
Book D, with a 91 and fifty articles ranked below 10?
And what title? The hits are shown either "Ranked" or "By Book", but "Ranked by Book" isn't really accurate. It's more like "Ranked, Grouped By Book" -- but this depends on the answer to the ranking definition....

I'm not sure... I just know that the two choices as they stand don't really work for me...
Maybe, not just an alphabetical ordering but one ordered by number of hits... So not "ranked" but descending hit counts...

I think just totaling the hits (or totaling the article rank) for all the articles in a book and sorting the books that way would be better than alphabetical, for me.
Or why not the highest average rank across the all the book's articles (not just the articles with hits)? That way the books that have more articles with hits, hit higher. If I'm ranking books, I don't care so much to see a dictionary with a high ranking article in it (that can be found in the current "Ranked" search). Rather, I want to find a book that discusses it throughout, so all the articles should figure in the ranking. It might be better than just totaling the hits for a book, but I don't know.
PLUS, I think book ranking should include the data from the library ranking algorithm as well. If the search string is in the title or subject fields then it should have a strong influence on the book ranking higher than a book with an equivalent article hit rank.
Bob Pritchett said:And what title? The hits are shown either "Ranked" or "By Book", but "Ranked by Book" isn't really accurate. It's more like "Ranked, Grouped By Book" -- but this depends on the answer to the ranking definition....
Change them to these three options:
"Ranked by Article" / "Sorted by Book" / "Ranked by Book"

How do you suggest we map this to books?
My
first thought is that any arrangement would likely do a better job of
producing useful results than the current alphabetical arrangement,
which seems to put almost completely unrelated books in the top spots.I can think of three possibilities in keeping with Bob's above:
1.
"Book with highest article of Rank first" - This would put the books in
this order D, A, B, C (This will find articles most relevant to the
topic, though the book may cover a variety of topics (encyclopedias,
dictionaries, systematic theologies, etc)2. "Book with Highest Average first" - Order: B, A, C, D (This may mean a book about the topic, although the specific hits are
throughout the book rather than concentrated in one article.)3. "Book with most articles with hits" - Order: C/D, A, B (Like #2, this may be a book about the topic which hits scattered throughout rather than concentrated.)
Note: This would still likely put books A, B, C and D all at the
top of the list above E, F, .... which only have 1 random hit, but may
still show up at the top of an alphabetical list. So no matter what
system is chosen would still be better than alphabetical.Which to choose:
Why not put the choice for all three, at least now in the Beta stage? Let us see how they work out in practice and give our thoughts.
If
I have to chose one without trying it, I would tend to go with #1. This
may move books about the topic slightly lower on the list, but would
dig up many articles that focus on that topic.Again, no matter which scenario is chosen, I think it will be better than a straight alphabetical and the top 10 books will have a lot of similarities no matter which method is used since the random, one hit books will all get moved to the bottom.

ROTFLOL [:D] I literally laughed till I had tears in my eyes.
Ok, so I'm persistent. It used to be that way with Andrew and notes in L3.
Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

You won't receive any criticism on my account for persistence.
You may have noted that I can be like a dog with a bone on several issues...

Hi Damian,
I know it's frustrating to not get a response, so I thought I'd type out a summary of my best understanding of the roadmap for 4.0 and beyond. Please don't take this as the official word on what is and what isn't going to be implemented, but just what I know from reading the bug database. (And my memory may not be perfect.) "Not in 4.0" means it's not going to make the initial release; I don't know if it will follow later. "After 4.0" means it's not going to make the initial release, but I'm pretty sure it's going to follow later. "Not planned" means it's not planned for any release of 4.x. And of course all this is subject to change; it could well be that many "not planned" features are discussed and implemented for 4.2 or 4.5 or later.
One final note, many of the features you suggest make me think, "Yes, we should do that!" I'm sure we will get to many of them. Some of them are surprisingly difficult to implement, and we probably won't have time to do them before 4.0.
Finally, thanks for maintaining a concise list of enhancement requests; it makes it easier for us to track the most-requested features.
1. Individual tab 'x'. Not in 4.0.
2. Right-click close pane. Not planned; workaround: click on an open tab.
3. KeyLink on phrases. Not in 4.0.
4. My Passage Guide. Done.
5. Parallel resources. Not in 4.0.
6. Multi-column reading view. After 4.0.
7. Legible sigla. Not planned; they're just Unicode characters, so this seems like it depends on your default font.
8. Custom icons. Not in 4.0.
9. Update saved layout. Not in 4.0.
10. Prioritisation. Not in 4.0.
11. Left side of new tab. Not planned.

13. Change "Go" box. Not planned.
14. Home network sync. Not planned.
15. Tagging, rating. Not in 4.0.
16. Cited By. Not sure.
17. Ranking explanation. Bob has explained; current ranking algorithm unlikely to change for 4.0.
18. Collapsible search results. Not in 4.0.
19. Export reading plan to calendar. Not in 4.0.
20. Context menu item placement consistency. Not in 4.0.
21. Information Close button. Not in 4.0.
22. Unlink all. Done.

31. More size options. Unsure.
32. v3 PG sections. Not sure what this means exactly.
33. More keyboard shortcuts. After 4.0.
34. Plurals and apostrophes. Not in 4.0.
35. Better chrome. Not in 4.0.
36. HP images on smaller screens. Should be done, but how small are you talking?
37. HP remove any item. Not in 4.0.
38. Remove ribbon. Not planned.
39. Multiple drag. Not in 4.0. (A great feature, but technically complex.)
40. Abbreviated PG command. Not in 4.0.
41. Outline PG section. Not in 4.0.
42. Improve PG commentaries section. Not in 4.0.
43. Drag pane. Use Shift+Drag; no drag on empty area in 4.0.

I know it's frustrating to not get a response
Bradley, Thanks for your comprehensive response.
I haven't been frustrated by a lack of written response to the UI and other suggestions which I have made because I have seen actual responses in the design of the program (6 of these - and others from elsewhere, esp. regarding the Home Page). As you can see, I have been striking-through those which have been implemented. I wouldn't keep writing if I didn't think that it was having an actual effect - at least in terms of raising issues.
The only frustration which I have expressed was with a lack of response to an issue regarding crashing and regarding not updated resources. Much more "mission critical" than UI issues. (OK there may have been some other frustrated comments...)
For the most part, I'm not concerned whether these suggestions make 4.0 or later. These are things which I think would improve the program, at whatever stage.
Just on a couple of points:
7. Legible sigla. Not planned; they're just Unicode characters, so this seems like it depends on your default font.
It's partly a colour issue. Please compare with v3: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/926/7561.aspx
32. v3 PG sections. Not sure what this means exactly.
This is actually done. It was the ability of sections to "remember" their last state (running or collapsed)
36. HP images on smaller screens. Should be done, but how small are you talking?
On my 10.1" netbook. I get no images at all.
see the first three pages of my HP here: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/2831.aspx
40. Abbreviated PG command. Not in 4.0.
Not sure why this one has to wait (or may not be implemented). It should be about the easiest of my suggestions (or whoever it was who first thought it up)
