1. An "x" on individual tabs like in other tabbed programs. The "x" on the edge of the pane should be for closing the pane.

2. A right-click context menu when clicking on the blank part of a pane to close that pane.

3. The ability to select phrases and send them to one's preferred English language dictionaries... eg. "Son of Man"

4. The ability to set up a "My Passage Guide" which overrides the default Passage Guide... http://community.logos.com/forums/p/871/7522.aspx

5. The same parallel resource functionality as in v3. The presence of a drop down box to chose parallel bibles / commentaries. The presence of arrows to cycle through such resources.

6. Multi-column layout for reading view

7. Legible sigla in NA27 and BHS

8. Custom icons for shortcuts on the toolbar.

9. The ability to update a saved layout with the current program layout through the right-click context menu.

10. With Dave Hooton. Separation of priorities from My Library. I'm sure this could be done by reusing the Library code but getting rid of extraneous fields etc. Prioritisation needs to be easier.

11. Get rid of the insane left side of the New Tab.... http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1021/8240.aspx

14. The ability to sync computers over a home network (as in iTunes 9)

15. The ability to tag, rate, and change the abbreviated titles for resources from the main library window without opening the information pane; The ability to tag books in the information pane of the actual resource.

16. The "Cited By" tool needs improvement... http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1183/9495.aspx

17. An explanation for the way in which search results are "Ranked"

18. Search results "Ranked by Book" with the book results collapsible.

Hmmm, now I know what happens when I accidentally hit "Post" instead of "Quote" and then cancel the post. It still posts what was sent even if the post wasn't completed.

    Damian,

Great fairly comprehensive list.  I like just about all the
suggestions ("just about" because some are about issues I don't use
enough to know). I would like to second the following.

    12. The ability to turn off pericope guessing

This slows my system and generally isn't very useful since I know what I want to study.

    15. The ability to tag, rate, and change the abbreviated titles for resources from the main library window without opening the information pane; The ability to tag books in the information pane of the actual resource.

I would especially like this from the resource itself. I am often reading a resource, would like to makes these updates and can't without going through the library and the various steps involved. A quick change from the Info button on the resource seems fitting.

    18. Search results "Ranked by Book" with the book results collapsible.

The full list is very overwelming, enough so that I never use the "Ranked by Book" view. I would like them collapsed by default for a quick overview of the books, with my preferred books showing first, then I can expand books which may be useful.

    25. Give us a bible reference in the Passage Guide!

Yes, Yes, Yes. There should be a reference link to open a Bible as in L3. This really needs to be there since it is the most important reference in studying the passage. The others should all be cut before that one (not that I want the other options removed).

    26. The ability to download program updates separately from resource updates.

The more control the better. There should be a special warning whenever any type of update is about to happen that will require a reindex or other lengthy, system intensive procedure.

    27. Real information about the resources which need downloading.

This would help in knowing which resources to download first to set priorities on limited download ability.

    32. Passage Guide sections which operate like in v3.

Here is my order of preference for how these sections would work:

    1. Each one can be individually customized to be expanded/collapsed by default

    2. User can chose to be expanded/collapsed by default

    3. Collapsed by default

It currently takes my computer forever to run the passage guide & generally finishes my most desired section (commentaries) last. I usually end up closing sections as soon as they finish loading since I don't want them. It would be great if they didn't run in the first place. (I know they can be totally removed from the passage guide and I have removed a few, but there are many I would like to have available, but not run unless I open them.

Agree, though I have reservations about 1 & 2 (sufficient space), 9 (not fussy about specific layout), 13 (don't use Home), 32 (happy with My PG + Add, especially if it becomes default PG).

    reservations about 1 & 2 (sufficient space)

Space should not be an issue. It's possible to make the "x" a hover or make it appear upon selecting that tab. This is how a number of programs deal with the issue. For me, Logos should emulate other tabbed programs. All of these, to my knowledge, place the "x" on the tab itself. The "x" disappears when the tab shrinks to a certain size,

Re 2, space is not an issue here. I constantly right click on the blank space to no effect. I just seems logical to offer the opportunity to close the pane from the blank part of the pane.

happy with My PG + Add, especially if it becomes default PG

I'd love of My Passage Guide became the default.

    Rob,

currently, there is no Ranked by Book. There is ranked which I do not really understand but which offers hits from the same resource all over the place. There is by book which is alphabetical.

    Damian,

I agree with almost all of these, especially those below.

    1. An "x" on individual tabs like in other tabbed programs. The "x" on the edge of the pane should be for closing the pane.

Agreed.  A rather large group of users are used to tabbed browsers, Opera, Firefox, IE7&8 all  use them and close their tabs the same way.  We are used to having the X on the tab itself.  Whether superimposed or however, I'm in favor of the X on the tab.  yes it takes up a bit more room, but it doesn't need to be huge.  Make it small and "backgroundish" then when we hover over the tab itself, make it bright pink for all I care, but make it work the way everything else works and the way everyone is going to expect it to work.

Logos: you'll save yourself bunches of emails and calls, "How do I close a tab?"

    2. A right-click context menu when clicking on the blank part of a pane to close that pane.

And all the books on the pane too?  Sounds great!

    4. The ability to set up a "My Passage Guide" which overrides the default Passage Guide... http://community.logos.com/forums/p/871/7522.aspx

YES!  ahem, I mean yes of course, that's a great idea.

    6. Multi-column layout for reading view

That would be quite nice.  I've got a 22"widescreen monitor which means reading view is massive and frankly unusable.  But if I could break it into say six reflowing columns than I could read amazingly fast.  For speed reading I've found a column of about 10 words width on a steady scroll speed (if I'm scrolling) means I can pour through material much faster than normal.

    12. The ability to turn off pericope guessing

Or speed it up until it's insanely fast and thus transparent even on an 8086 2.2Mhz machine.  (ah, memories.)

    13. The ability to chose the standard behaviour of the passage search bar from the home page. I would like to set it to just run passage guide. (But, I would only use it if the latest addition of the information window and text comparison tool were dropped)

Yes yes yes yes yes!  Please make this customizable.  And please give us the chance to make a different layout the standard.  Right now it's three panels 1 long and two stacked.  I'd much rather make three long panels the standard (|1|2|3|).

    14. The ability to sync computers over a home network (as in iTunes 9)

While I love the idea, I wonder if it could be implemented without losing the cloud backup.  I like the cloud backup.  But I would indeed love it if local P2P were the standard.  As an example sync.live.com does a great job of this.

    19. The ability to export a reading plan to a calendar file.

ICS?  yes please.  Even vcal.  Not all of us use Outlook.  Many of us would rather pull off our toenails than use outlook (well I would anyway) but it's the default and only offering for export.  Yuck.

    31. More size options for images rather than just fit and actual size.

What do you suggest Damian?  I can't conceive of other functions at the moment.

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

    Thomas,

I'm thinking of a drop-down box with some scaled sizings: 25%, 50%, 75% as well as "Fit and "Actual size" (or 100%). On my netbook, "fit" is so small that it's like a thumbnail. Actual size for some images, esp maps, is unwieldy.

Dave, in Google Chrome, when the tabs reach a certain minimum size, the "x" is not visible until the tab has focus.

Good list.  I don't think there is anything there I would disagree with.  But in particular for me these are absolute musts in no specific order:

    4. The ability to set up a "My Passage Guide" which overrides the default Passage Guide... http://community.logos.com/forums/p/871/7522.aspx

    6. Multi-column layout for reading view

Tried to narrow the absolute's down to 5 but couldn't get there... one more that is an absoulte that Damian didn't mention is improve bible explorer media seciton...too many irrelevant hits... e.g. we don't need every media referencing Jesus showing up. Only media resources direclty related to the passage or a parallel passage should show, expanded results can be accessed from biblical people, places and things. BE should be a quick entry point not an exhaustive list.

There are a few "absolute musts" that I know I missed. I went through my 500 posts in the Beta forum (excluding the ones from the last two days) and put them in list form.

There have been many good suggestions (including your one on improving Bible Explorer) which I failed to comment upon. They therefore didn't show up in my search.

I was talking about the placement of the "x". I can't think of one tabbed program that doesn't have it on the tab itself. But all of them manage to provide means not to interfere with very small tabs (due to a large number of open tabs).

My problem with "Close all Tabs" for the pane is that you need to click on a tab. I keep clicking on the blank space after the tabs and I remember when the prgram first came out, I kept clicking on the "x" at the end of the pane itself.

I don't want to labour the point, but I had hoped you would see from the picture that :-

    • the tabs are so small that it would be difficult/ugly/impossible to place an x such that you would not close a tab when you intended to open it (as you've just described) + I don't want the minimum tab size changed; and
    • there is no blank space

    How about something like this:

As you move mouse over the  tab of the active pane a close option drops down below the tab.   It would only do so for the active pane so that you know exacty what pane you are closing.

It was a rough cut and past job...I'm sure the real thing would look prettier and it would only 'roll down' when you mouse is on the actual tab, at all other times it would be rolled up... either way I'm not offened if you don't like it...just visual storming some ideas.

    Updated.

    1. An "x" on individual tabs like in other tabbed programs. The "x" on the edge of the pane should be for closing the pane.

    Like Google chrome:

    image

When all we have are images, the image for the active tab can be replaced by an 'x' which highlights on focus (as Chrome deals with it)

    image

    image

    2. A right-click context menu when clicking on the blank part of a pane to close that pane.

    image

    3. The ability to select phrases and send them to one's preferred English language dictionaries... eg. "Son of Man"

    5. The same parallel resource functionality as in v3.

    a) The presence of a drop down box to chose parallel bibles / commentaries.

    image

    image

    b. The ability to cycle with arrows through parallel resources.

    b) The ability to set parallel resources separate from prioritisation

    6. Multi-column layout for reading view

    7. Legible sigla in NA27 and BHS

    Wow. Great list! Me, too...

In addition, I'm still looking for help to get to CBV from a Word processor. Ideally, it'd be a smart tag. Acceptably, it could be an icon in the system tray. I do not want to have to go back from where I'm working in the word processor to Logos to initiate the CBV. I do it too often for that to be other than disruptive.

On the other hand, beta 8 is looking awesome, in general!

Damian's list is fabulous. There's a ton of tho't and effort in there and the ideas are really helpful and will improve L4. And the presentation, O the presentation! It is so clear what he's asking for.

    Thanks Damian.

Of the list I'd only disagree with #11 because you've still got the list on the right and I don't get too many lists like he did, but the option to be able to turn it off I'd agree with.

Just a list which I'm really keeping for myself- it's easy to lose one's suggestions amongst the thousands of posts here.

Now why didn't I think of that?  I'll have to cull through some of my (hundreds?) of posts and see what I can find.

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

That's what I did when I started this last week. I went through over 50 pages of my posts. The only shame is that I didn't always say "ditto" or "agreed" to all the excellent suggestions which I have read.

It shouldn't be too hard for you Thomas. Just search for "handouts"  :)

Chris, I really can't see the point of the left hand side of the New Tab. It presents resources with the same metadata as the one being opened. What's the value? In my opinion, it slows things down.

    43. Ability to click and drag a pane and not just a tab.

You can use Shift+Drag to move all tabs in a pane. (Are you asking for something different to that?)

    Thanks, I didn't know that....

I'm not sure if it's obvious or memorable.

But, it's not exactly what I want. In this case, you need to actually be have the mouse over a tab.

I would like to be able to click  the blank part of a pane and move from there...
