iOS 4.2 app update?
Hi,
I was wondering if Logos planned to release an iPad app update for the iOS 4.2 release due to come out next week. If so, would it include some major updates I imagine?
Any details that can be provided would be appreciated.

We don't have a release planned specifically for iOS 4.2. Since the Logos app is a universal app and already supports iOS 4.0, it supports multitasking on iOS 4.2 on iPad.

Regarding features, as I understand it the main feature is the new display engine. As I understand it, this should be some significant improvements to offline use, though I suspect that much of the benefits will be behind the scenes. That is, the new display engine will allow Logos to develop new features in the future, though I haven't seen any mention in the forums that there'll be new features in the next version.

Has it been confirmed that v 1.5 will use the new display engine? I ask because I would have expected a change that significant to warrant a major version increment i.e. v. 2.0.

Putting http://community.logos.com/forums/p/12807/179058.aspx#179058 together with this http://community.logos.com/forums/p/24487/193329.aspx#193329 certainly gives the impression that 1.5 will feature the new engine. I suspect the lack of version number hike is that most the of the work is 'behind the scenes' work that will bring benefits soon, not immediately.

I agree these changes are more than necessary and i am really excited to see them or not see them which is what "behind the scene" would mean.

Has anyone heard (or know) if we might get Library install from our installed Logos, giving non cloud items, and older resources (I really want my Barclay and DSB Old Testament available to my phone and future ipad). I know some companies allow you to install via itunes sync whatever files you want off your computer. I am not saying that I would want or expect the iOS app to support everything back to the original format but there has been a whole lot of items that people own that are in Libronix but will never have the chance to see the light of day as a Logos4 resource.

PS:Could this problem be solved via a general migrator software that updated files to be in Logos4 format, or would that somehow contravene contracts since you are not selling it but only updating peoples owned copy...

The issue here is a licencing problem rather than a technical problem right? ie Logos can only push stuff through to the iOS app if its within the bounds of the licencing agreement with each publisher. A way around if you want to read a book on iOS that isn't available is to print the book to PDF and then use an app like Goodreader.

Yes but most of the contracts were drawn up for Windows Logos too... as I understand it people who own the books own them period (Logos has to pull them for sale we still own them). I know we have no right to move it to a new program.. but Logos is a platform... and Bob says the same display engine will be in iOS soon as in the mac/windows platforms. Saying we have no right to read our books on a less powerful portable computing device seems to me like saying, "The rights were for Libronix, it's no longer going to be readable in Logos 4". I do fully understand that Logos has no right to release Libronix files into Logos4 files because they no longer sell them (and I suppose a conversion program would be tantamount to that), but there should be nothing stopping Logos from implementing the readability of Libronix on iPad, the same way that if a LINUX version Logos ever came about you wouldn't have issues because these items are being licensed for the Logos engine. The problem of licenses for the iOS so far as I understand it is the cloud nature. because you are not depending on a customer's owned copy but a shared cloud copy with access for remote viewing by owners of that resource, which is a different kettle of fish.

I wish that was true. Unfortunately in the new electronic world in which we live that's not the case. It's not the case with the music you buy from iTunes, and it's not true with the resources you buy from Logos. You see, we don't own the resource, as such. We only own a licence which gives us permission to use the resource in certain ways.
Now I don't know what the licence agreement said 5 years ago, nor do I know what the contract with the publishers said. I'm not even sure why there is no problem with the licence being fine for the Mac, but not fine for the iPhone (was Mac written into the original contracts, was 'desktop operating system' written in. I have no idea).
So it's theoretically possible that the licence agreement with us and the original publishers will allow mobile usage. But my point is only that we don't own the resources, and therefore unfortunately we can't decide what to do with them.

Sorry I didn't realize things were as restrictive as that. I wonder how accordance is getting away with allowing us to put anything we own onto the iOS.. but then I know contracts vary from company to company. My library has always been on a mobile device, a laptop.... LOGOS will do what they can I know.

I just got my iPad a couple weeks ago, and like others, I've been spending time making my resources available for offline use, painfully one book at a time. My question is, with the impending change in the display engine, would that require offline resources to be re-downloaded again? If the answer is yes, I wouldn't spend time downloading the resources now until the 1.5 is released.

I can't give a definitive answer, but almost certainly yes. The whole point of the new display engine is that it will display native Logos files, rather than the 'simpler' version that is sent from the Logos server. So I would be fairly confident that to gain the benefit from the new release, all offline files will need to be re-downloaded. Ideally I suppose the app would look at which files are already downloaded, and automatically 'upgrade' them to the new format. Perhaps Dave might be able to tell us whether it will?

Yes, 1.5 will require offline resources to be downloaded again in a new format. However, previously downloaded resources will still work as they do with 1.4. The app will also check for updates to resources and let you update with only a few touches.
