Anyone have any problems upgrading from Vista to Windows 7?

Just curious to see if I am the only one who has had major problems with L4 after going to W7. For some reason L4 freezes/stalls, etc since I upgrading from Vista to W7. Posted on the forums and received several suggestions (for which I am thankful), spoke with Level 2 tech support several times over the past several weeks; however, no one can identify the cause of the problem, It has been decided that it must be a hardware problem (monitor, graphics card). So, I was wondering if anyone else experienced any problems like mine.

My solution has been to move all of my work to my laptop and not use the desktop until a solution is found. BTW, the problem affects only L4. All other software works fine.

Larry I made the same move but experienced none of the problems you have had. I did a complete reinstall as I went to 64 bit Windows 7 installing a 7200 RPM drive in the process. I noticed an immediate improvement in speed in L4. I then added 2 more GB of RAM and saw even more improvement.

Moving to W7 isn't always painless from what I've read. Drivers are a big issue and depending on the age of the computer you upgraded could be hard to come by.

Have you installed the latest drivers you can find? Have you made sure you are updated to the most current .NET release? Have you run Check Disc on your HD?

Well, it is possible that if you simply did an upgrade rather than a fresh install of Win 7 that you will have to go back and start over with a total reinstall, Reformat your HD, install W7 and then your programs. Maybe someone else has had the problems you are having and can give you the missing piece of information you need, but my experience is that going the full reinstall route worked fine for me. I did have to track down some drivers, and occasionally have problems, but not specifically with Logos 4.

Yes, I did a clean install of W7 multiple times. At one point the consensus was that it was a windows problem so I did all that you described on multiple occasions. At another point it was thought that it was the monitor and at another point the graphics card, etc. All to no avail. That is why I asked the question to see if there were any others out there. Very frustrating, I'm sure. As I said my upgrade from Vista to W7 went well so that process alone is not faulty.

Please post specs of your desktop. Graphic card usually doesn't cause programs to freeze, unless you are overclocking the hardware or have bad drivers. A monitor definitely does not. Have you installed Logos 4 from scratch (and not from a backup from Vista)?

None whatsoever. I've had a few problems recently with L4 bombing out on me (becoming unresponsive and being shut down by Windows), but that is a very recent problem which seems to have occurred after Logos 4.2 was downloaded. It doesn't seem to like some of my note files. I think it has something to do with the import process from L3. I hover over certain links and it crashes. I end up redoing the link and deleting the old one.

HP Pavilion a6750y- AMD Phenom 9650 Quad - Core Processor 2.30 GHz - 685 Gb hardrive , over 500 still free - ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics - driver version is 8.791.0.0 (10-26-2010) - 8.00 GB Installed Ram (7.74 GB usable) - 64 bit operating system - W7 Home Premium - Westinghouse Monitor ( one thing that I have noticed is that W7 lists my HD monitor as a Generic PnP and the manufacture as Standard Monitor Type; whereas, in Vista it was listed by the manufacture name, type and model number).

FYI, Level 2 techs Don, Sarah, and Anton, all three, took over my computer and checked the logs, specs, etc. Couldn't find any errors with L4, compatibility problems with my computer, etc. Sarah deleted a cache file which seemed to solve the problem for a few minutes and then the problem came back. BTW, Thank you Don , Sarah, and Anton.

Personally, I suspect that it is something tied to W7. Some little, previously unknown quirk . Frustrating thing is that it hasn't been figured out yet.

Larry, although I do not have your L4 problems, I do have W7 issues with this HP (Elitebook) laptop. It came pre-loaded with XP which was then upgraded to w7 by the computer shop Since then it often "freezes" as it tries to boot. I assume that this is because of the Windows upgrade route? I'm hoping that the (soon to be released--now in beta) Service Pack will solve this iisue.

It would be wonderful if it were to solve your long running challenges.

There is no true upgrade route from XP to Windows 7. (You can use some included tools to transfer documents, settings, etc.) If they tried that, I'd suspect that as the culprit for your "freezes". Did you check HP's site to make sure the laptop supports Windows 7? The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor does a very good job of explaining what will work, what might work, and what won't work without finding some upgraded driver / app on your own.

You had stated that all your other apps run just fine in Win 7. Since you are the only one having Logos 4 freeze/stall in Windows 7, I doubt the issue is with the OS.

Just want to clarify with you: clean install means you had formatted your hard drive, erasing everything on your computer. Then, you installed Win 7 64 bit from your Microsoft install disc, not from a hard drive image copy of your computer from HP - there's a big difference. If you used a image disc from HP, this might be your problem. In other words, don't install Vista at all - just Windows 7.

Once you have clean installed Win 7, you might try updating your Win 7 with all the latest patches. Then install Logos 4 from scratch.

I did exactly what you stated. Did not use anything from HP. Purchased W7 from Walmart. I think the Windows term was "custom install". I did not choose the "upgrade" option because of a warning from a computer tech friend. He said that people were encountering a lot of problems using the "upgrade " option. Something about the "upgrade" retaining the Vista platform. After the installation windows automatically updated over a hundred items or "patches". Then I installed L4 using internet download. I might add that as stated previously, these were done multiple times. Thanks for the links and your insight.

I am running logos 4 on two completely different computers, Dell xps and thinkpad x201. Both are running windows 7 64 bit. Both run very well, even the non-video card thinkpad. No problems at all.

Correct. Did you format your primary partition? I am assuming you have only one partition. After installing all your apps, including Logos 4, do you recall how much drive space you had left?

FYI: If you have a Windows 7 Upgrade disc, you can perform a clean install - even after removing the previous OS from your computer. It involves undocumented procedures as mentioned in one of the websites I linked.

It's very odd that your HP computer runs all other apps just fine - but not Logos 4. I had entertained the thought of suggesting that you or some else conduct an exorcism on it. [6]

Well, (fingers still crossed) I have good news. I decided to reinstall for the "umpteenth time" the drivers for the video graphics card and it appears to have solved most of the issues. I have been using L4 for a couple of days and it appears that the issues are resolved. It seems that after the installation of W7 the most recent update for the graphics card (probably the one that enables the card to work with W7) was not installed. It was downloaded but never installed.

We'll hold off the cheers for a bit, but this is good news. The evidence pointed to a local problem and of course in an upgrade to W7 the usual suspect is a driver. It may seem strange that L4 caused a problem and nothing else did, but we do know L4 uses a lot of graphics power. Thanks for sharing the good news. If we don 't hear from you again, we'll assume the problem is solved.
