My Mac cant handle it

Well, I've tried and tried. The updates to Logos 4 Mac are awesome. And I can definitely see the improvements for Mac. However, my machine (early 2006) is just under spec'd. I spend too much time working on the machine and the program to get any study work done.

I'm planning on getting a new MBP 17" in January. Until then, I have to go back to my Win laptop for my work.

I'm a Mac guy through and through so it pains me.. But I must get some work done Smile

[I] Upgrade 2006 MBP hard drive to Solid State Disk (SSD) or faster SATA hard drive (7200 RPM+).

Observation: 17" MBP 2006 model has 31 screws (T6 and small Phillips) along with 2 pieces of tape - takes awhile to physically upgrade hard drive.

After Intel's keynote on Jan 5, 2011 to officially announce Sandy Bridge processors, wonder when Apple plans to refresh Mac models.

I've had the same frustration, and I'm running a 2008 MBPro with 2.4ghz duo-core, wi 4 gig of ram... I also have a Parallels6 application and tried running the Win version under WinXP...

Finally I got so frustrated with always waiting and waiting for tabs to open, scrolling, searches, and other stuff that I'd decided to go back to Libronix v 3.0e and run BibleWorks 6 or 8 to do my exegetical work. I just could not use this new Logos 4 in a "live" Bible study setting where I needed to move about quickly to respond to my class.

But tonight I did something different. I went over to my search results panel and clicked off the settings for almost all the web based features, sermoncentral, logossermon, powerpointsermon, interesting words, interesting people, etc. etc, etc. I cut it back to just the commentaries and the bibles, and it's moving along fairly briskly. I still don't know how to isolate my library collections for search purposes in Logos4 as efficiently as I did in Libronix3xx, but its worth giving it another chance. I can't wean off BW6 and Libronix3 yet... There are some powerful features here, but they just overtax the system, unless you are willing to calmly count to 10 with every single click of the mouse waiting.... waiting...... and still waiting.

And having said that I'm frustrated and have tabled new purchases to my library until it picks up a little speed. I've got over $2,000.00 worth of resources that I've been building since about 2002-3 to my recollection, and I'm ready to go backwards to L3 and BW6 if need be till this thing gets worked out.

..and i'm sure it wil, as the updates seem to come out almost weekly.

Another problem with switching off all the fru-frah, is that some of my commentary resources trigger switching all that junk.... (and I use the term generically) back on, and I have to manually deselect every one of those features again or I'm back down to a crawl.

I have the same MBP as you do. I am running the latest beta that has a few issues, but is really good speed wise if you do a few things:

1. Create your own passage guide from the menu/guides:

Also, L4 Mac and Parallels do not play well together, as they are both memory hungry. If you want L4 Mac to run at its best, do not have Parallels open at the same time. I also keep all the sections of the Passage Guide and Exegetical Guide collapsed and only open those that I want to use at the time. I find L4 Mac speed the same as L4 Win for most areas. The Parallel Passage section is still slow so, keep it collapsed or remove it from your guides. Lastly the Word by Word section in the Exegetical Guide should only be open when needed.

Here's a link to a performance update guide by a photographer who pushes Macs more than Logos 4. You may find some of his advice helpful in configuring the hardware side to get better performance. Some have found that going running Snow Leopard in 64bit mode improves performance quite a bit.

Don't know if you are still following this post, but respond if you are... I got your note and tried to edit my passage guide. Opened it dutifully as directed, and clicked the "X" in the right hand corner.... Lo and behold, nothing happens. Close out editing passage guide and open it and try again. It's as if they are "dummy buttons" with no function.. They do change color indicating I'm hitting the right spot, but they don't delete the selection. Perhaps I'm the "dummy" here. Is there something I'm missing?

And, when I manually close them from the active, visible passage guide, they're gone, but as soon as I enter a new text in the search field there are all my resource hogs like "spinning balls" trying to open, and slowing a 10 second search to a 2 or 3 minute wait while all my resources "catch up" with the new text in the search field.

I gotta tell you that staying out of Parallels is not an option for me, because I'm fighting this so much that I'd prefer to open WinXP (and stay there) and open all my other Bible study software options alongside, so that the bulk of my study takes place in them (BibleWorks 6 & 8 and a couple specialty libraries), and I find myself weaning off of Logos 4 as much as I can. I realize this interface is designed to try to bring "expert" bible student results to laypersons studying, but modifying the interface to meet my needs is so non-intuitive and default settings choke my computer.

Incidentely, I DO like being able to download large portions of my Logos Library to my iphone4. That IS a winner. Its a little tough to navigate between fields on the small screen, but that's a plus, and it's part of what influenced me to upgrade to the Logos 4 from Logos3... Probably should have waited.... "early adopter's hardship."

Clarification: Many people have time to go through the growing pains of software, some of us should wait till it reaches a painless, plug n' play state of being. We just want the fruit at breakfast, we don't want to cultivate and grow the tree. That's my relationship with my computer.

I have an almost the same (2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo / 4 Gb SDRAM) configuration on my MPB 2008 and L4 for Mac is running nicely. I have L4 running under VMware Fusion in WinXP and in Snow Leopard L4 for Mac. At the moment I hardly use L4 in the windows environment anymore because L4 for Mac is running without any problems. It is not lightning fast but is definitely not slow. I can use it fairly well. I am very satisfied and happy with all the possibilities I have to study the Bible. No spinning balls and no minutes of waiting. L4 for Mac has grown mature.

And mind you: we have bought resources and got the program with all the advanced tools for free !

So, also reading other posts about performance and speed it is my humble opinion that although L4 can use some speed optimizing the problem is not L4 but has more to do with configurations, installations, preferences, expectations, experience, patience, and so on.

BTW, I also have Accordance; BibleWorks, OnlineBible, StudieBijbel (dutch) and I am using it in combination with Logos 4 which suits me best. And I think the vast majority of Logos users are satisfied as well, what you see on forums like these are the problems and questions.

I don't want to beat this dead horse much more but I run LOGOS MAC 4.0 on my 2006 MBP (2.13 GHz core duo) , 2 G ram , and a (user added) 7200 rpm 500 GB disk drive. LOGOS MAC and LOGOS/parallels run fine. Not blindingly fast but with adequate speed for class and study work. It could be worth looking at your hard drive, MACs are notorious for slowing down if the drive doesn't have 20% or so free space. It's easy to fill up a 120Gb disk.

It is also a given that you cannot use anything else on this MAC when parallels is running (at least nothing like LOGOS).

Just got logos 4 mac scholars silver. I have a black macbook that I got in 2007 (2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs ram memory, mac snow leopard, and an upgraded 500gb @7200rpm seagate hard drive). I just installed the program a few days ago- I can look up books ,etc though a little sluggish- but the homepage just remains blank. When I first installed the program the homepage seemed to work but it hasn't since first opening it a few days ago. Any tips? Thanks!

I just cannot edit my passage guide. I've tried closing the features I don't want from the active passage guide, and I've tried using the upper left side drop-down menu to edit it. It will not edit in mac version Logos Bible Software 4.0b SR-1 (4.10.4.8093).

At least not from the visible passage guide and not from the drop down, and everytime I open a tab that was opened to a previous search it hijacks my search, and my currently linked resources to that old search and I have to wait till the spinning balls quit spinnning so that the application is responsive again, and then reinitiate my search and wait for it. Then the full passage guide, with all the fru-frah, (sermoncentral, media, bible things) all the stuff that I don't want opens again, and forces me to wait.

Guys, this is not easy-peasy intuitive software. This is kluge.... Software should not require a secret handshake to make it work.

That is tremendously arrogant, or shortsighted on the part of the developer then. We used to call that "bloatware" in the mac world when applications hogged too much hard drive space or used too much of the computer's resources. jf

I saw definite improvements in the last beta in both performance and features. However, my 4 year old Macbook Pro just isn't up to the task with its slow hard drive and only 2 Gigs of RAM.

With all due respect, it's none of the things you list. The performance issues are an L4 Mac problem "bottom line." My MAC screams with every other app I own... lot's of CPU, ton's of RAM (16G), fast HD and I have spent literally hours tweaking it to get every drop of performance out of the system. I even went as far as re-installing the software & rebuilding indexes. Bottom line... though loaded with wonderful features, L4 Mac is not ready for primetime and I am a very dissatisfied customer. Search is not so bad, but the UI screen paints & scrolling are choppy and quite honestly very frustrating and unacceptable. In all honesty, I dread using it. And the sad part is this. Based on my purchasing power, I have a small fortune invested in this software and quite honestly will not spend another dime on Logos products ever unless I have a total change of heart. I just want Logos to deliver on what they already sold me.

John Fidel provided some "tweaks" suggestions to the "passage guide" on the left. I tried to use them on my Logos 4 for Mac, and couldn't make them work. One of the Logos Guys responded that he'd check out our version today back at the shop.

Now... I took John Fidel's suggestions into my Parallels partition, and applied them to my Win version, and they worked. Every suggestion he made worked, and my Win version works acceptably well. Like, I can use it in a group Bible study now with expectation that I'll get what I need. Thank you John Fidel!!

But that brings us back to the Mac version, in which we truly have identified a bug.... I can't edit the "Passage Guide," like I can in the Win version.... Now if we get that fixed and I can refine what loads with every search in the Mac world, I will begin to feel like Mac users are not second class citizens.

Looks like we're moving forward again. A problem identified is halfway to the solution.

I closed out my search, initiated another search and I'm back into the long wait with the light gray gray screen waiting to "draw in" the search results. Finally in a couple minutes my search begins to appear.... And all my unwanted resource hogging stuff is back in my search window.

Hi John,

If you click on the Guides menu and choose "New Guide Template," and then add All Sections from...Passage Guide, are you still not able to left click on the X to the right of a section to delete it? (The X turns from gray to black when you hover over it.)

Also, another method you can choose to modify a Guide is to add only the sections you want to generate from Individual Sections in the guide template editor. Just click on a section, such as Commentaries, and it will be added to the template. You can also click and drag added sections to change their order.

If you create a custom guide, and give it the name "My Passage Guide" or "My Exegetical Guide," when you do a search from the home page it will open those custom guides with only the sections you have selected.

Yes, I do. From what I can figure out of these forums that quite a lot of mac users are satisfied with L4 for Mac and its performance. Are all these folks (including me) just some silly ignoring people not knowing how to handle a mac..or what a program performance should be... ?

I know that this is not what you mean and I can understand your frustration after spending hours of tweaking. But it is still your personal experience which is not mine. I am satisfied with the overall performance. I do not have any scrolling problems. So...you simply cannot make a general statement that L4 for Mac is not working or unacceptable or...

And again: you invested in resources not in the software. The L4 App is for free. You are able to read and study your resources. But..perhaps not in a way you want or expected.

What I was originally trying to do was click the "x" to remove them, right from the default passage guide. In my mac (and Win version under parallels) version. That doesn't sustain through future searches so it's worthless to me for speeding up the system.

Then I began using the dropdown menu on the left, "edit passage guide," and in the Win version you can edit, and save, but it still pops up the unwanted search items on your next search, and I'm back having to edit my passage guide. Again I say, that's no help at all.

In the Mac version, the "x's" are like dummy buttons that haven't been activated. Hence you can't remove items, nor save the changes except in the active. Passage guide, and that doesn't sustain in the next search.

Last night I was doing that in my Windows version and hoping the it would give me a permanent set of preferences to get rid of all the "junk" references (at least "junk" from my needs) and leave me with just Bibles and Commentaries, and cross reference guide, and TSK resource. Most of the time that's all I want.... I get my word studies by running the cursor over the word, and it opens a strongs, or I double click for more detail. The major drag on this new system is all of the online (sermoncentral, logossermon, music, media, etc. etc. people, places, interesting words, yada, yada.)

When I do a word by word, verse exigesis, I recognize that will slow things down. Just like "fuzzy search" slowed things down under Logos 3. We expect that. The real problem is that everything including the kitchen sink is "turned on" in this version by default, and it doesn't let me "turn it off."

Like the other gentleman says, I've had to backtrack to using Logos3, plus BibleWorks 6 or even 8 to get what I could mostly get in L4 if I could get the settings right.

Of course, a disclaimer here is that I'm not running Parallels6 and Mac L4 together. All Mac tests are stand alone, and when running Win version of Logos4, of course it has to run under Parallels6. But I do confess that I mostly shut Mac L4 down and use Logos 3.0e (or f or g, whatever the last version was) under Windows. and then I use that with BW6 or BW8 plus some proprietary libraries, running under "wine" and folio file, xquartz.

All my operating systems, and study software versions are the most current versions of everything, and I have lots of hard drive space, and 4 gigs of ram. Parallels is configured to pull maximum recommended ram, and processor to favor the virtual machine when it is active.

Ok, attempting "Passage Guide" modification. 4 minutes from launch till application is responsive to do anything in the application.

Opening left side drop down menu to create new "Passage Guide" as per instructed.

There is no option to create a new passage guide, just a refresh of the old guide. Are you guys from Logos using the same Mac L4 that the rest of us are?

So should I "Refresh Guide," Edit Guide," or "Delete Guide," Those are my only choice in Logos Bible Software 4.0b SR-1 (4.10.4.8093).

So I try them all. "Delete guide," just deletes changes from my original Passage Guide, including changes I've made in the working view. That puts me back into the "spinning Ball" mode, waiting, waiting.... w a i t i n g.. for it to give me back my computer. Couple of minutes or three, and then I've got all the "junk resources" loading again.

"Refresh Guide." ..... Same thing... puts me back into the original "Passage Guide," long wait, and all the "junk" again.

"Edit Guide".... Opens the list of options with "dummy buttons." Click them, and nothing happens.

I don't think that we are all working with the same software version here. I gotta tell you this is really a premature release. Its junk for many of us that need a quick responsive search, that allows us to edit our preferences intuitively.

Now in the Windows version.... I can do the edits, and I'm going to close out this Mac application, and move over, launch Parallels, and try all of this again on the Windows side of the fence.

I suspect that many of us long time Logos users just might have higher expectations than recent converts. I don't know. Maybe I need to dump the application and do a clean install.

Ok, Launching Win version under Parallels....

Nearly 2 minutes till I have the Logos splash screen

another 4 minutes till I reach the page of resources

Total of 8 minutes and basic screen is up, and I've got a notice recommending that restart Logos4 because there are new resources. I click and do what I'm directed to do.

I look up and discover a tab called "Passage guides." There are about 10 of them. None of them have anything in them, and worse, when I select them the option to "delete guide" is grayed out... unavailable. And of course, whenever I try to do anything it takes so long. I've spent nearly an hour tonight playing with this software tonight and I haven't done any study, nor resolved any problems with settings or "passage guides."

Sorry Guys, I can't recommend this software to any of my friends. I'll sit on the sidelines and listen for awhile, but I'm like the other guy..... I've cancelled all my pre-orders, and deleted my credit card from my online account. I'll certainly be back...when it's fixed, and I trust Logos enough that it will happen. But for now this software is just too problematic, it's a premature release. I run a lot of software and this make the grade.

Ok, spent another hour on the software..[:(] Discovered that all those blank "Passage Guides" really aren't blank when you insert a text and run them. Kinda like running a script? Hmm? So I deleted all the extras, and oddly I only edited one version, but they both share the same preferences file, and the other version (Win vs Mac) both have the same passage guides now. That's a useful development.

This begins to look a little faster now.... and I've gotten rid of all the resources (aka "junk") that slows it down to a crawl.

You're quite right, John, there are several bugs in stable! I've just tried this out. I'll start with a section to Logos listing all that I've found and then I'll write a section to you, trying to explain to you how to work around.

1) Editing my default guide doesn't work. The x's are dummies, just like John says.

2) Trying to close a populated guide has given me a series of spinning beach balls of death. I'm stilll working on finding the logic behind when it does and when it doesn't.

3) Creating a new guide template sort of works. The x's work fine, but when I name it My Passage Guide and close it down, it doesn't overwrite my existing My Passage Guide, like I would expect it to. Instead it turns up in the list as Untitled Guide. (Interestingly, the title on the tab when opened, however, is My Passage Guide.)

4) When my current default guide is open, the option to delete it from the upper left corner is grayed out. I can only delete under Tools > Custom Guides.

5) If I delete all custom guides and create a new My Passage Guide, it still shows up as Untitled Guide.

6) When I collapsed all but one section in this new template, closed it, reopened it, and ran a verse, it populated with three expanded sections. Only after closing those two a second time and redoing the procedure did it open correctly with only one section open.

7) This new custom guide does become default from the Home Page, but not when I choose Guides > Passage Guide. Surely I'm supposed to get my own default then as well, not your default one with all the sections that takes forever and drives John (and me...) crazy?

8) After running one single verse from the Home Page, Close all Tabs resulted in another spinning beach ball of death.

9) The very first attempt at creating a new template as in 3) resulted in two (!) new items in the list. If I remember correctly one was called Untitled Guide and the other Copy of Passage Guide. Deleting one of them deleted both.

OK, John, here we go (and this is on a 'clean' Mac, no Parallels):

a) Keep calm! You've been so frustrated that you have been looking in other places than where people have been telling you to look. That is understandable, but it makes it rather frustrating for those trying to help you as well. Read carefully before you act, and take it one step at a time.

b) Close down all your open tabs.

c) Go to the menu bar, choose Guides, and look under Custom Bible Study Guides. If you have any guides listed there, right-click on each one of them and delete them (at least if they're called My Passage Guide or Untitled Guide (if you've got others, specifically made, you should of course keep those, but as I understand it, that is not the case)).

d) Then choose Guides > New Guide Template. (In the menu bar, not in an open Passage Guide, which is where you've been looking!)

e) Name it "My Passage Guide" (exactly that, but without the quotes).

f) Either click on All Sections from Passage Guide and delete the sections you don't want (yes, those x's work like they should (at least on my computer)), or click on the individual sections that you do want, in the order that you want them. (You can drag to rearrange if you want.)

g) When you're done, close the tab.

h) Now go back to Guides in the menu bar, and look under Custom Bible Study Guides again (which is why I wanted it 'clean' to start with). Hopefully, you now only have one item there, which will be called either My Passage Guide or Untitled Guide. Click on that to open it.

i) Enter a verse you've never run a Passage Guide on before and hit enter. If everything has gone right it should now open with only the sections you've chosen.

j) It will, however, open with all those sections expanded. If you want it to save time by opening with one or more sections collapsed, this is how you do:

k) Let it run till it's finished, then collapse the sections you want collapsed, and close the tab. The next time it should open like you left it.

l) Because you've named it My Passage Guide, this will now be the default Passage Guide when you use the Go box from the Home Page. I believe it is also meant to be the default Passage Guide when you choose Guides > Passage Guide, but this does not seem to work for the moment, so for now, if you don't want to work from the Home Page, you'll have to either choose your new custom guide manually under Guides, or you can incorporate it into a layout.

m) One problem you will still have is that Logos obviously saves all Passage Guides you've ever run, so whenever you enter a passage you have run before, you will get the old guide you got then (with all the sections you don't want), rather than the guide you've got open. But let's deal with that later. Just make sure to enter passages you haven't used before, for now.

I was able to reproduce the problem in 4.0b SR-1 when editing a current Passage Guide, but not when creating a new custom guide. This may help developers to track down the problem. I cannot reproduce the problem in the Mac beta version.

Update: This was fixed in the latest release, 4.0b SR-2.
