Hey guys. I have a new 13" macbook pro with 4 gigs of RAM and Logos is unbearably slow on this thing... Anyone know what's going on or how to go about fixing this problem? Is Logos really just this slow?
Is this a new installation of Logos? Has indexing finished? Things may run a bit slower until indexing completes. There are some continuing performance issues with Logos 4 for Mac but in my subjective opinion it's not in the category of unbearably slow anymore.
By "indexing" Chris means that there should be a blue Logos icon in the upper right hand of the Mac screen. Logos will be slow until the indexing is finished.

Concur initial Logos 4 resource download and indexing can take awhile (hours) - personally index while away from computer.
Wondering about Logos 4 version ? Likewise wondering what is unbearably slow ? (curious what trying to do in Logos 4).
For example, a Passage Guide for entire book of John takes couple minutes, but smaller passage (e.g. John 1:1-18) takes many seconds while John 1:1 done in few seconds.

Slow performance section on WIki page also has memory usage monitoring - wonder about available memory ? (after indexing done)
Likewise wonder about resource contention with other programs, especially disk intensive ? (e.g. anti-virus, online backup) - similar effect for Logos 4 as being in congested traffic with more vehicles merging (lots of brake lights).

Compared to most programs, Logos4 for Mac is slow.
I have a 17inch early 2009 MB Pro with 8GB RAM. I plan to get an SSD in the next couple months which would help with things quite a bit.
My suggestion for you is to look at www.otherworldcomputing.com, expand to 8GB RAM and get an SSD.
I really doubt expanding to 8GB RAM will have any effect on speed issues in Logos 4. Even with quite complex searches I practically can't see any real differences between 2GB and 4 GB (you can easily verify this in Windows Task Manager or a Mac equivalent)! A SSD and a more powerful CPU will do a much better job here.
Where does it state on the Logos website that you need a super duper mac to run the software? I've got a 13" unibody macbook with 2 gigs of ram. Logos is so slow that it is almost quicker just to get the books out and do my study the old fashioned way. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I cannot afford to upgrade to a faster machine. Is there anything being done to address this slowness for those of us with slower macs?

Agreed sometime the old fashioned way is the way to go. I do find myself going back to Libronix 1.2.2 alot. The L4 Mac is ALOT slower. Even on the Windows platform. I have both systems. L4 Windows is slow TOO. I end up using Libronix

I am a mac user and won't get into it again other than to say it has got much faster and will continue to improve, most people are happy with it but it is a big bulky program, there have been windows users complaining too.

Yes. My primary focus right now is on improving performance throughout the app.
Thanks for the update, David. It really is frustrating to have spent several thousands of dollars on the software and be too frustrated to use the program. Add to that the fact that it's been this way for many months and you can understand that my frustration is growing.
Agreed, a lot spent on a program. Its powerful but slow. Libronix was just fast!

Concur faster hard drive or Solid State Disk (SSD) improves Logos 4 performance - see forum http://community.logos.com/forums/p/28313/209706.aspx#209706 for some SSD upgrade ideas.
Dreaming: wish Logos 4 system requirements for Mac and PC included a comment like: " Logos 4 is a resource intensive application on Mac & PC – benefits from fast processor, graphics, and disk along with adequate memory (i.e. newer hardware since Logos 4 designed for many years of use)."
Observation: time difference to rebuild index for Logos Scholar's Platinum is measured in hours between recommended system and super duper Mac's.
Turning off the internet made a HUGE difference for me. Thanks for pointing out the wiki page for poor performance!
I wonder what's going on with Mac performance.
I first used a late 2008 Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz with 6 Gig of ram and a 256 Gig SSD, and I get great performance with it. I was very happy with it.
Then I have since last month a 11" Macbook Air 1.4 GHz with ONLY 2 Gig of ram and a 128 Gig SSD, and the performance is still great! Indexing and searches takes a little bit longer (but not by much).
I have Platinum and heaps of other resources, 2634 in total and I also link panes together quite a lot.
Amount of Ram does not seem to matter much here, CPU does matter only a bit for my use.
With the 11" MBA, I let my elder son have my iPad and my younger son have my 7" Android tablet, I use the MBA very comfortably as a ebook reader with full Logos at hand all the time.

I remember these exact same conversations back when Series X (Libronix) first came out. I even upgraded my machine back then to run it, and I rarely keep a machine long enough to be out of warranty. Compared to 2.1g (if I remember correctly) Libronix was really slow. But wow what an improvement in features. And as all of you probably know, over time Libronix was 'fine tuned' and machines caught up. 2.1 had a built in index just like Logos 4, and once built, made searches very fast. Libronix lost this, but was a trade off because the quantity of available books was getting too large to handle in 2.1. Thus the introduction of individual book indexes. Now that machines are faster and storage and ram larger, the index has been brought back and more advanced features added. Forgive us who have already been through this process for our seemingly 'fan-boy' patience. But having once gone through the process, it is not frustrating, but exciting for us to look forward to what is to come.

The die-hard defenders will tell you to turn off your Internet, tweak this, or tweak that, but the bottom line is that it is a slow program, but it's slowness is being addressed. David is working on it and that is good news!
All in all, it is a wonderful program (The best on the market IMHO) and i am a big fan (Just not a die-hard defender). As the performance improves it will just keep getting better.

I found that (after getting good advice on the forums) switching OSX into 64 bit mode (stock is 32 bit, don't know why) significantly improved performance for me.

That works well. But don't try to use your computer to play DVD's. At least mine do not work unless I put it back into 32 bit mode.
Also, Mac Mini's currently don't do 64 bit, at least for me. Which is frustrating, since I put in 8 gigs of memory into the mini to better run CS5 at our business.

It happened to me. There I was minding my own business when suddenly I realized that Forum Addiction was real and I loved L4. [H]
I have noticed L4.2 Windows has been a LOT faster and L4 Mac. I Tested it on my Boot Camp side and my Parallels side. It out RUNS L4 Mac, by a long shot .!!! If L4.2 Windows Keeps running this fast I will get rid of Libronix 3 on Windows. NOT sure about L4 Mac. Libronix 1.2.2 is more stable.
