I like this....but I have one question....how do I differentiate between a quote and allusion...I know that you said it was subjective....but is there a resource that draws this dividing line so I can get started?

I can't think of a resource off the top of my head that delineates a dividing line. Quotes use the same words, allusions use similar words. A quotation is a deliberate invoking of an OT passage whereas an allusion may just be present because the author was so immersed in the OT. So if you are in doubt about a specific example you can consult these to help make a determination

    1. Does the NA27 put it in italics? What it considers quotes are italicized.
    2. What does the NET Bible say? It is normally pretty good at  identifying quotes and allusions.
    3. If still in doubt a technical commentary or something like the Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old should finish tipping it one way or the other.

Does this help? Even if you end up mis-classifying something here or there you will still end up better understanding how the NT authors use the OT.

The line between quote and allusion is necessarily fuzzy. You cannot use an identical words criteria because approximately 70% of NT quotations are from the Gr. Septaugint, and are not always word for word.

There are numerous resources that will give an exhaustive list of quotations.

A number of recent threads about searching for the quotations in the New Testament of the Old Testament has prompted a new project for me. I am manually highlighting the quotations and setting up a framework to highlight allusions to the OT.

    Did you forget about

Beale, G. K. and D. A. Carson. Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament. Grand Rapids, MI; Nottingham, UK: Baker Academic; Apollos, 2007.

    and

Philipps, H. David. Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament. Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software, 2009.

    I don't like re-inventing the wheel.

Has anyone done this for the ESV? It would be hugely helpful if someone has spent the time to highlight every NT quote of the OT in the ESV (instead of the GNT) and wanted to post the highlighting doc to the faithlife group! Also, if anyone has highlighted the OT texts with references to their NT quotations that would be awesome too!

Thanks to anyone who spent the painstaking time doing this and is willing to post it!

Like you I am unable to find this resource in Logos or on Amazon. I do know however of a comparative offering logosres:otquoteallsn;ref=Bible.Mt6.33

if you have it in your library the link should open to a passage in Matthew I am meditating on. As for the other resource, perhaps my good brother George will clarify.

It did not show up for me in a Product search, but it's there in my library. Thanks for the heads up.

Just a note to remind everyone that there are quote and allusion lists in the Bible Harmony section.

In addition, in case anyone did not already know it ... the NASB95 has quotes and allusions in CAPS. Not as cool as colored highlighting of course.

One of many reasons I like the NASB in Logos. In L3, I also get a hoverable pop-up in NASB of the Strong's entry for both Hebrew and Greek. Instant ID.

One day, when L5 grows up, it will be as useful as L3.

I don't know what the problem is since I have it right in front of my nose, but I can't find it on Logos' site either.  Perhaps it was discontinued?

One of these days your knowledge of Hebrew may improve enough that you will want to use one of the "big brother" lexicons to the Strong's.

I don't have a problem using those, George...I use them all the time. They simply aren't as useful in many cases. Most of those, for instance, don't indicate syllabic stress, whereas Strong's does. As I know I have explained before, if L3 had a means for allowing a user to switch the hover pop-up to another resource other than Strong's, I might take advantage of it, but it doesn't.

Fwiw, just the other day I was doing some study on a word, and the HALOT entry was the worst of all. The New Strong's Dictionary (not the same as the Strong's Lexicon) was the best, with BDB being its equal, only with much additional (and unnecessary & unhelpful) information. HALOT's entry was so skimpy you could say it was in error.

This is real easy for me to find in MY Library...it's right where I put it...

    Commentaries-->Single-volume Commentaries-->Testament Commentaries-->OTQNT

As you can see, there is also OTQANT available in Logos. (Everyone knows about CNTUOT.)

All 6500+ books in My Library are exactly where I put them.

For some reason I doubt that very seriously.  Perhaps you could provide the word and the passage where you found it.

The word was לָוָה and its offshoots. I'm often underwhelmed by HALOT. But I don't want to hi-jack this thread, so let's not hash it out.
