do you think its worth paying for a i7 or will i5 be fast enough im looking at refurbished mac pro laptop 15 inch they are 1500 rpm, i mainly use logos so anyone know
Darren, generally speaking an i5 with a faster clock speed will probably outperform an i7 with a slower clock speed in Logos because at the present Logos only makes use of at most 4 threads during indexing. The extra processor power of an i7 might help with multi-tasking, but clock speed is still going to set the speed for Logos itself. I don't know what i5 processors are available for the Mac and there are a lot of variances between versions, so that could come into play.
Future-proofing is a guess since I haven't heard anything about Logos' future plans to take advantage of more processors/threads in the CPU. I think you'll find folks here who are using i5 processors and are very happy with their performance.
Remember that HD speed and total memory make a difference in speed as well.
I think you mean 5400RPM -- 1500RPM would even open notepad I have a new MacBook Pro i5 2.4GHz with 4GB RAM, however, the day it arrived, I tossed the 5400RPM drive it came with and dropped in a 7200RPM WD. I am "reasonably satisfied." I really hope they continue to make improvements. Considering the price jump to get an i7 (I think it was $450), I can definitely say I am satisfied enough that I would not pay that much more.
As Mark said, get the fastest HD you can afford (SDD would be nice...), have plenty of memory, and do make sure you have discrete graphics.
Last year upgraded my dad's MacBook Pro from 5400 RPM to 7200 RPM - noticeably faster [H]
