How to make a collection of works pertaining to Catholicism

I just downloaded Catholic Theology and Dogma Collection (8 Vol) and now want to create a collection not only of these works, but also of all Catholic resources I may have in my library. How do I do that?
On a similar note, is it possible to create a collection along a particular denominational line or movement, such as Presbyterian resources, baptist resources, Orthodox resources etc.

Unfortunately there is no simple rule to make a denominational collection. Some (perhaps most?) of such resources might mention the denomination or tradition (Catholic, Orthodox, Baptist, etc.) in the Subject field, but not all will. So you could start with that (e.g., subject:Catholic) and then manually tag whatever resources you find are left out of such a collection to pick up the rest. So supposing you had in your library the book called Aquinas on Doctrine (which doesn't have the word Catholic anywhere in its title or subject but is of course a work of Catholic theology being about the leading Catholic theologian, Thomas Aquinas), you would add Catholic as a tag, and then add OR mytag:Catholic to the rule to pick up such works. So as long as you do the tagging right, this should do it for you:
subject:Catholic OR mytag:Catholic
This should work fine for most denominations or movements, but you might have to get clever if you're doing one whose name also appears in other contexts not meaning the name of this movement. For example if there were a subject "John the Baptist" (which I don't think there is; just using it as an example) you'd have to exclude that from your rule to avoid picking up those books which mention Baptist in their subject line only because of him. So this is how you'd do that:
subject:Baptist OR mytag:Baptist ANDNOT subject:"John the Baptist"
Here's more about tagging in the wiki: http://wiki.logos.com/Tagging.

Both questions really do converge in this one.Mark said:On a similar note, is it possible to create a collection along a particular denominational line or movement, such as Presbyterian resources, baptist resources, Orthodox resources etc.
Because of the way the Collections are rule based it's not quite as easy as you might hope since AFAIK the resources are not generally tagged denominationally. To do that, Logos or You would have to tag the books that way.
What remains is to manually bring the resources you want into the collections. There is a very full description available here:Collections
EDIT: Sorry Rosie answered before I posted my response.

Thank you both. I know the wiki pages on how to do collections but did not see a rule for making a collection of Catholic works. I totally understand how difficult it would be to do such a collection for a particular denomination. But when it comes to resources on the Catholic church, I had more hope. Rosie's answer proved sufficient for my purposes and while I may have resources not tagged that I wished were in my new Catholic collection, I at least have a start and the resource I downloaded tonight all made it into the collection.

Hi again, Mark. To help you get started with tagging your Catholic resources that are not in your Catholic collection yet, here is the list of resources Logos considers to be related to Catholicism: http://www.logos.com/products/search?Christian+Group=Catholic
And here's my Catholic collection which includes some that are not included in the above list. Oh, the joys of Print/Export! Links are created automatically so you can click on these titles and see if you have them already in your library.

Unfortunately, it fails to include all the Church Fathers works which are fundamental to Catholics and Orthodox.

Aggh! How could I have forgotten ECF and ACCS (Ancient Commentary on the Scriptures)?
OK, here's my new rule:
title:catholic OR subject:catholic OR mytag:(catholic, ECF, ACCS) OR "Jerusalem Bible" -"catholic epistles"
And here are the works I've specifically tagged as catholic (case is insensitive in tagging); note that I picked up a couple of additional ones that weren't in my list above: Reading Scripture with the Church Fathers and A Concise History of Christian Thought (because it has a big section on the Church Fathers) and a couple more issues of Christian History magazine (Augustine and The First Bible Teachers):

Rosie I didn't see Church Dogmatics Vol 1-5 by Karl Barth on your list.

Also if you have Bibles (I see Jerusalem Bible on your list), don't forget about the Clementine Vulgate, commissioned by Pope Damasus I !!

Sorry for not including an explanation, I include him because his writings are highly regarded and referred to often in Catholic theology. Many Popes have referred to his writings often, including current Pope Benedict XVI, a noted theologian of the 20th century, who cites his writings, even though not always in agreement. Benedict has stated his respect and high interest in Barth's writings. Pope Pius XII called him the greatest theologian since Aquinas.
Books by Karl Barth are a regular part of the diet at Catholic seminaries in the U.S.. He was a guest at Vatican II, working with people like Pope Benedict (Joseph Ratzinger) as a contributor to Vatican II documents. His prominence became much more established in Catholic circles as the Church sought to make its message more clear to a 20th century culture. I will say those who would deem themselves "conservative" were not fans of Barth, but IMHO he is very relevant to Catholic thought in the 20th century.

I'm sure many Catholics read Luther too, as many Protestants read Hans Urs von Balthasar and Thomas Aquinas. But I still think it's useful to maintain a distinction of what works are clearly coming from a Catholic perspective or are about the history of Catholicism rather than ones which have influenced Catholics. So I wouldn't include Barth in my Catholic collection.
But Dominick, thanks for the other suggestions. I have most of those books and will add them.

I agree - and then again I don't. It is perhaps clearer in the case of Byzantine Catholics who would claim many Orthodox theologians as their own than it is with Barth. But Catholics are less doctrinally oriented than most protestants. It allows us to both revere a theologian and consider him a heretic e.g. Origen. The result is that a theologian who considers himself to be Catholic such as Matthew Fox, OP is not a Catholic theologian while Jaroslav Pelikan who thinks himself to be Lutheran turned Orthodox is.
Net effect: I would not expect/rncourage a Protestant to include Barth among their Catholic resources. However, I would not be surprised to see a Catholic do so. I chose to treat Zecharius Ursinus as Catholic ... and trust no Lutheran takes offense.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

I'd say that the first task is to decide what kind of "Catholic" collection you want. Some might want a collection that argues both for and against Catholicism; others would want primarily books written by Catholics, but might include very objective descriptive books about Catholicism and/or the Catholic church, even when written by non-Catholics; yet others would want only books written by Catholics, or only books they themselves would consider to represent orthodox Catholicism. Some would want to include every single resource that fits into the right category above; some would want their collection restricted to dogmatics; some might prefer to include only post-Great-Schism works, and search their Patristics collection separately. It all depends on what you want to use the collection for.
Personally, I've started on a "Catholic Theology and Spirituality" collection, excluding Catholic Bibles, lectionary, and biblical scholarship (except for books on the principles of biblical interpretation, which is kind of a dogmatic subject). So far I haven't been able to figure out a situation when any of these would be useful to me in a Catholic collection; I suspect they'd only give me lots of unwanted hits, making it harder to find the useful ones. I also restrict myself to Catholic writers (I have a large number of dogmatic collections where I can study opposing views when that's what I want). I might make a wider collection later including some Orthodox, Oxford Movement and other stuff, and just drop this one in there, but this one is going to be (more or less) "clean".
Some strings that might be useful to include in such a collection:
- title:(trent,vatican,"apostolic fathers")
- author:(aquinas, anselm,bede,clairvaux,assisi,kempis,"the cross",chesterton) (Add whatever authors you have.)
- abbrev:(ANF,NPNF,ACCS)
- mytag:cath
Subject:catholic and title:catholic, on the other hand, I avoid. For my purposes they give too many false hits, and not nearly enough good ones. Though I've used them in the Library to find books to tag.
If one doesn't mind having Protestant works on the Church Fathers included, one can drop one's whole Patristics collection in the + area to save time, but, like I said, I won't. I could have dropped my Medieval one, though; there's nothing in there that isn't Catholic.
Rosie Perera said:But I still think it's useful to maintain a distinction of what works are clearly coming from a Catholic perspective or are about the history of Catholicism rather than ones which have influenced Catholics.
I agree. But why, then, are you including works that are far less Catholic than Barth, not to say directly anti-Catholic?
And if you're including Catholic Bibles, shouldn't you include e g Raymond Brown? He's far more likely to be useful than a Bible. If hits in a Bible is what you want, you probably won't search this collection, you'll be doing a Bible search.
