What is the best search string to find Church history iinformation on a particular passage, since most Church history books do not have actual Biblical references in them? Thank you.
Hi Michael, could you give an example of what you mean by "Church history information on a particular passage" if the history books in question don't have actual Bible references in them? Are you looking for places where Church history books discuss a certain passage by quoting or alluding to it but don't actually give the Scripture reference? That might be kind of tricky to set up a search string for. All kinds of writers throughout church history were so steeped in Scripture that they would quote and allude to it all the time in their writings without making direct reference to the book, chapter, and verse. Sometimes editors have come along afterwards and added footnotes to tell us later readers what verse the original author was referring to. But we're not always so lucky. For example, I am reading Memoir and Remains of the Rev. Robert Murray McCheyne right now (a wonderful book). He's constantly quoting and alluding to Scripture, but very rarely gives the citation. When I recognize a Scriptural allusion, I will go search for it and if I find it I attach a note with the reference. But I'm sure that more than half the time I'm completely missing them. How would I search for all of these without reading the book through and recognizing them myself by my own familiarity with Scripture? There is no way!
Is that the sort of thing you had in mind? If not, please elaborate further.
Hey Rosie,
I guess Church history may have been an incorrect name. Probably first century Jewish customs would be a better description of what I am looking. I have Edersheim's works, but I have not been able to find information easily. Is there any way to did search better to find that information? Would it be better to search for phrases like "marriage" or "law" then Biblical passage? Thanks.
But any information that you can give me on search Church history books in a better way would be great too. Thank you for any ideas and your time.
Michael
So you're looking to find all the sections of Bible background books (Jewish customs, etc.) that are relevant to a particular passage, then, right? Yes, it would still be hard to construct a search that would pick up everything relevant for you if these sections are not tagged with the Scripture references. If they are so tagged, you can find them pretty easily. First the easiest thing to do might be to run a Passage Guide on the passage in question. It'll find a lot of stuff, so you might want to narrow down the results a bit. Here's how: You would first create a Collection containing all your useful background books (the Edersheim ones, the Bible Background commentaries [Zondervan OT and NT and IVP] if you have those -- they'd be really useful for this kind of research, etc. -- I could help you construct such a collection if you need help). Then whenever you want to know what your background books say that would shed some light on such-and-such a passage, you would do a search like this:
In the above screenshot, I'm asking Logos to do a search in my Bible Background collection for all places that reference (or overlap with) the passage John 2:1-12.
You can sort the results by Book ("Title" if you using 4.2a) and pick through the ones you think are most likely to have something helpful. For example, here's what the IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament has to say about the first few verses of that "Wedding at Cana" story:
2:1–11Jesus’ First Sign
"Third day" here does not refer to the third day of the week, because virgins were married on the fourth day (Wednesday) and widows on the fifth; nor does it seem to fit the count of days in 1:29, 35, 43. But ancient writers often bracketed off segments of their work by starting and ending on the same note (a practice called inclusio); thus John may use this designation to point toward 2:19 and link this story (2:1–11) with the prediction of Jesus’ death and resurrection (see on 2:4).
2:1. "Cana" may be Kefar Kanna (over three miles from Nazareth), but most scholars prefer Khirbet Kana (over eight miles from Nazareth). Either site would be close enough to Nazareth to explain how the host knows Jesus’ family.
2:2. Weddings lasted seven days, and hosts invited as many people as possible, especially distinguished guests like prominent teachers.
2:3. The women’s quarters were near the place where the wine was stored; thus Mary learns of the shortage of wine before word reaches Jesus and the other men. Her words probably suggest that he should do something; guests were to help defray the expense of the wedding with their gifts, and it seems that their friend needs some extra gifts now.
2:4. "Woman" was a respectful address (like "Ma’am") but hardly customary for one’s mother. Jesus’ statement here establishes polite distance (though "What have I to do with you" is usually a harsh, not a polite, expression in biblical language). Because Jesus’ "hour" in John refers especially to the cross, here Jesus is saying, "Once I begin doing miracles, I begin the road to the cross." To run out of wine at a wedding was a social faux pas that would become the subject of jests for years; the host was responsible to provide his guests with adequate wine for seven days.
In general, I think you'll find that the commentary authors have done the work you'd be contemplating, of researching background on phrases like "marriage" or "law" or whatever other interesting social customs and historical artifacts you find mentioned in Scripture. But it is also rewarding to do some of that research yourself, which can't easily be done with a simple Passage Guide or Search. However once you've got a good Bible Backgrounds collection built up, you can find more useful information about those social customs by restricting your search to that collection. And come back to the commentaries to check your work.
Thanks Rosie for your hard work....I realize that this was no easy task and I am sure you have other pressing things to accomplish today, but thank you. But one more question.....when I set up a Biblical background collection what "type" phrase do I use to sort them?
Here's my rule for my Bible Background collection (which is still a work in progress, so it's not ideal yet):
(title:background) OR (subject:background) OR (title:manners AND title:customs)
Note that I've also had to manually add some resources which didn't get picked up by that rule, and manually exclude some which I didn't want in the collection. When I have some time I still plan to get back and do more tweaking on this collection, base on some of the ideas in this thread, but here's what I've got in it so far:

For Bible Background collection, could start with title:(archaeolog, atlas, background, context, milieu, manners, social) OR subject:Bible--Dictionaries

PHEWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!! Goodness Gracious! Someone must have a lot of time in "her" hands! LOL I'd like to know how long it took you to copy and paste each link and to write all the references...hehehe...just kidding! Anyway helpful information. I'm already putting a collection of my own the only thing is that it won't be as large as yours. Thanks!

It took virtually no time at all. I just opened the collection, did Print/Export, Copy to clipboard, paste to Word first, then copy again and paste here. The spacing of paragraphs comes out better if you use Word as an intermediary for some reason.
Glad you found the info helpful. :-)

Hi Rosie! *smile*
I also found the information very helpful and studied it (and emulated it!) according to my own library.
I also added a few items of my own, including: Testimony and Interpretation
Early Christology in Its Judeo-Hellenistic Milieu Studies in Honour of Petr Pokorný
