What is your first choice in Patristics? Please help

St. Valdimir's Press has asked me which volumes of the Popular Patristics series would be most popular in Logos - i.e. what volumes are the best place to start? Which of the following do you think would generate the most interest?

Perhaps not too helpful. I culled down the list to include, the Popular Patristics I have, have read, or have been interested in reading. Realistically, I want the whole series because the popular patristic series is one of the few, affordable patristic series.

The whole series is needed.

That being said, you asked for which ones would be the best place to start. Probably Cyprian and Melito of Sardis would seem less foreign to Westerners just getting into patristics. But then Athanasius and the Cappadocians are essential foundations for Christianity.

           If I needed to settle for a diminished list, I would go with William in his post!

I think there could be a lot of interest in the Cappadocians, Chrysostom, Athanasius and Gregory the Great.  In addition to the ones on the above list, Basil the Great - On the Holy Spirit and Irenaeus - On the Apostolic Preaching would be good.

John Chrysostom and Athanasius would be the priorities for me, but if the value was good I'd buy the whole set.

I belatedly note that Tertullian is included.  Should I add Latin?

The Popular Patristics are all English translations, designed - as the title indicates - for general readership, not academic study. They tend to have reasonably long introductions added too.

I already have these in the ANE and NPNF series.  I doubt that a different translation would improve matters that much.  What I need is the texts in the original languages.  I have asked for Migne, but it is languishing in pre-pub.

I'd say priority A should be to get all those volumes that can't be found in the Early Church Fathers, like St Symeon the New Theologian, St Isaac of Nineveh and Melito of Sardis, to name just a few that I can't seem to find. 

Priority B would be if there is anything particularly badly translated in ECF (I wouldn't know, but I'm sure there are those who do).

After that we can go with favourites. 

But I too want them all, if I can afford them.
