Can a single window be resized without dragging adjoining windows with it? I would like the option to turn off the automatic adjoining of windows.

Here is where logos draws the line :-) Its the brave new world of non-overlapping panes.

You CAN resize a single floating window

True, but that cannot float on top of the other windows and still be visible when you click on another window. I know this is a new design concept. I can sees its advantages, but I am not thrilled with it. I find myself spending too much time fighting windows that do what they want rather than what I want.

Ah...So I was the one not understanding the other :-) True. For the most part you cannot do that.

It sounds like you're trying to create a "gap" between panes? This isn't possible, but you could click and drag the Search icon from the toolbar and drop it in between the two panes to create a "blank" space between them.

Not ideal, but a definite doable workaround. Just create everything as floating windows.

And if you are just looking to "pin open" a floating window at a particular place in your layout...then use "deskpins" a free utility that "pins any window open" no matter where you click or what app you're in...I use it all of the time.
