How to search for ONLY a given spelling of a word.

How do I search for a given spelling of a Hebrew word. I want to return ONLY the identical spelling? Not every pattern of the words that have the same stem. But only the exact same spelling used.

It looks like all of the searches are performed on the root/stem. How do I tell it to search on the specific spelling? Or can you? The actual search I am doing returns over 2000 hits because it is using the root. I want to focus on the exact same spelling and see where it is using the same spelling. I'm guessing this is a checkbox or setting that I am missing, or maybe I am doing the wrong type of search.

Any suggestion or guidance is much appreicated.

Do you have "Match all word forms" turned off?

Note that vowels are ignored in Hebrew search, so you can't search for a specific vowel pointing.

Apprently I do not have that turned off. But I think you are using the 4.0 version, but I am still on the old. I have not invested the $180 to upgrade just yet, but I am looking forward to doing so. I cannot find something similar to what you are displaying. Is this option available in the previous version? It looks like you are viewing the menu directly under a main menu on a search results page. Where is that menu coming from?

The example you are using with DVR is exactly what I am trying to do. Not the same word but the exact same idea.

Ignoring the vowels is fine. I was actually hoping it would ignore them because there are different spellings of the word that use different vowels. So I would like both returned. What you are showing in your screen-shot is exactly what I am looking for with the different vowel patterns showing up. So that is ok.

Do you know how to set this in the previous version?

Oh, sorry. I didn't realize you were using Libronix (Logos 3).

In that version, to prevent searching for all word forms, which is called "stemming," you need to use the syntax:

nostem(דָוִד)

There's more info about this in the Help file under Advanced Searching.

That's why Rosie and I started assuming you were using Logos 4. The Logos 3/Libronix forum is the best place to ask questions like this as the forum should give the right context of which software you're using. Some people miss occasionally and give L4 answers in that forum though (I speak as one who has done it before [:S])

I tried to figure that out and the only thing I could see was the $180 upgrade for the Scholar Silver, which is what I have for Logos3. Maybe the $69 is for one of the smaller sets?

I will call in to customer service and figure that out. If there is a free option and a $69 option, I should go ahead and upgrade, as Logos4 videos are really impressive. And it looks like it will make the search I am doing much less complex.

Of course the sales guys want to sell you the upgrades, but I'm wondering what I will get if I just install the free engine. It will connect to my existing resources from 3.0? Or is it just basic search tool for a few common books. The crossgrade is not to costly, but I would rather wait a bit and see if I want to upgrade. What this means is that they've added more books to the base Scholar's Silver package, so you wouldn't get those. But you would still have access to all the resources you own from Scholar's Silver 3.0.

I would actually recommend the minimal crossgrade instead of just the free engine, because some of the features in the new engine won't work without the new resources and databases that come with the minimal crossgrade (this includes the reverse interlinears, Biblical People/Places/Things, and the Logos Controlled Vocabulary database, which makes topical searching possible and enhances Biblical People/Places/Things). You could play around with the new user interface and some of the basic functionality in L4 with the free engine, but to really use it well, you'll need the minimal crossgrade.

Rosie's right that there are features in Logos 4 that need the new databases from the Minimal Crossgrade or the upgrade to a L4 base package to make the most of it. My advice is a little different. Go ahead and install the free engine to start getting used to the new interface while you ponder the upgrade/crossgrade decision (you are right the minimal crossgrade will be a waste if you upgrade later to Gold or Platinum, it's only for those who know they won't upgrade or want the full L4 experience while saving up for a package).

Personally, if you can go for Platinum I encourage you to do it. For me the Platinum upgrade made Logos far more useful than it ever had been before.

I think I will go ahead and install the free engine and play with it a bit to get a feel for it and wait a few more weeks before making a decision to upgrade or crossgrade. The main reason to wait a bit is that I am apply to take some graduate courses this month and I think there are going to be some text that I need for some of the courses that are only offered at the platnium level. Apparently getting accepted is a little tough, so there are no guarentees. So I think I will wait a few weeks and see if my goals change a bit. But I can download and play with the free engine in the meantime.
