4.3 Beta 2 (v4.30.0.0213) is available for testing.
To upgrade to Beta 2 now, use the "Update Now" command if you’ve switched to the beta channel before, or the "Set Update Channel to Beta" command if you're on a stable version (such as 4.2a SR-3). To install Beta 2 from scratch, use this download link: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LBS4MacInstallerBeta/Logos4Mac.dmg.
For Release Notes see: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4.3_Beta_2. Note: Additional bug fixes have been added to Release Notes for 4.3 B2 since this posting.
When I hit update, the update would not download. When I tried to install from scratch, the update stalled at 1%.
Well, my download never goes beyond 0%. I have super-fast Verizon FiOS, so that is definitely not the issue. This is the second beta in a row that's had issues from the get-go. [:(]
I moved from stable to Beta 2 to give it a try. Just like B1, using saved layouts caused the program to crash.
So, I removed the Beta 2 and have returned to the Stable channel. Fortunately, I have fast Internet and a new MBP with a SSD, so the process does not take as long as it used to.
Actually, the stable version was running very fast on my new machine. Logos4Mac took less than 10 seconds to launch and intense layouts were also loading in less than 10 seconds. And, I was operating virtually crash free. I am still wondering why I ventured back to the "Beta side"?????
Blessings,
George
I'm still having the same update issues as well even after updating to Beta 2. I actually can download the file myself (it's actually 2009-10-26T22_22_11Z.lbsevp to be exact). However, I can't even run the scan command to add it manually. Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Beta 1 had such severe download freezes that I resorted to Stable. If you are on that version, you may need to download the disk image to get Beta 2 installed.
I'm contemplating moving back to stable ... although I'm a little weary of indexing my entire library all over again. If I can't get the 4.3 beta issues squared by the weekend, then maybe I'll go back to stable.
Melissa
The release notes do not mention the download freeze problems experienced by multiple users of Beta 1. Does that mean that this issue has not been addressed? The Mac Development Team has been conspicuously absent from these threads.
First froze around 20%. Tried again, stuck at 2.
It froze for me as well. Downloaded the package manually and ran it; updated fine that way. Shouldn't *have* to do that, but this is beta...
MIne froze at 39% so I downloaded it manually, only to find an instant crash on loading a layout, as Beta 1. See thread http://community.logos.com/forums/t/31941.aspx
This is still unusable for me. I am contemplating downgrading to stable release, but not sure of the consequences of this.
My download froze again ... noting new there.
I downloaded the file from feed://clientservices.logos.com/update/v1/feed/logos4-mac/beta.xml
This download had to be restarted several times (using safari) because of 'timeouts'. No other downloads seem to have this issue, only those from Logos. Fortunately, Safari allowed me to pick up from where it stopped.
I am now confused as to what I have downloaded though. L4Mac tells me that there is still a 75.5Mb download to come. My resources are up to date (I have scanned a folder from another installation, restarted etc.) so what is this?
'About Logos' gives me Logos Bible Software 4.3 Beta 2 (4.30.0.0213) which is, as far as I can tell the latest version so there should be no additional updates.
As an aside, when L4Mac loads, the 'breadcrumbs' are still collapsed/lost. Showing the reading lists, or the help file, causes the panels to redraw and the breadcrumbs populate normally.
Mine's stuck at 2% as well
Mine stuck as well, but I did a manual download of the .dmg image and copied Logos into the application folder myself. Worked for me.
No problem here with the download....
Install and first run seem fine...
Stuck at 0%, resorting to manual download.
do they do any internal testing????? or just leave it up to us?
Daniel,
This is the entire purpose of the beta cycle, to let users join in on the testing. Microsoft does it. Apple does it. Adobe does it. Scads of other development groups do it. Logos does it. One difference is Logos lets users in on the beta earlier than groups like Microsoft and Apple, meaning users will see more bugs.
I don't know what their internal testing procedures are, but it can't beat putting the software in the hands of users who run on a much wider variety of platforms and have a much wider variety of ways they use the software. So there is a beta program for those users that don't mind using unstable software (something Logos repeatedly tries to remind people before they use the beta version) and the tradeoff is beta users get to start playing with new features even sooner.
So it strikes me as odd to make a comment like this about leaving bug testing up to users... when posting in a beta forum about beta software where the whole point is for users to find bugs...
It strikes me as odd that you chasten him for making it. It simply looks like an expression of frustration to me.
Beta testing is done to allow a wide variety of user configurations put the application through its paces. Therefore, bugs, freezes, and crashes are expected. Having said that, I will concede that this Beta cycle has been especially bug-filled.

Brings back some Logos 4 Mac Alpha pre-release memories: Good Old Days ? (or many, many crashes)
Keep Smiling [:)]
Well, I did the manual download, and it installed just fine. However, I have experienced several crashes since then. In fact, when waking my MacBook Pro up from sleep, then program hung and would not respond. I've used betas for quite a while, both on pc and now on mac, and this is the first time I've experienced these kinds of problems.
Having said that, I trust that Logos is working on the bugs and will fix them soon. In the meantime, i may have to go back to a stable release (but I don't want to! [:)]).
BTW, could anybody tell me what I need to do to revert to the latest stable version?
Someone else may know a shorter way, but the only way I know is a complete reinstall - remove Logos from the Applications folder and also remove the folder Library/Application Support/Logos4 then download the stable client and install it clean.
OUCH! [:'(] Oh, I hope not! Thanks, though for the info.
OUCH! Oh, I hope not! Thanks, though for the info.
Info from the Wiki seems to modify slightly what I said - looks like you can avoid redownloading resources:
Beta bugginess is not for everyone (fixing some bugs spans several Beta releases). However, downgrading in middle of a Beta development cycle is difficult. Can use command Set Update Channel to Default for automatic transition to stable channel after Gold release for current development cycle. Potential Risk: some documents may not sync to a stable release eg. a new feature or format. If want to downgrade from Beta to Stable version, Uninstalling and Reinstalling in Logos 4 Mac includes all application files to delete plus Reset Logos 4 User Files has steps to reset local user settings (files) without re-download of resources: in stepC), goto step 2 of Copy Logos 4 Resources to Mac OS X (Supported – saves resource downloading) (instead of step 3).
Well, that's not as bad, but still a lot to do. Thanks, Chris, for sending me in the right direction.
However, I have experienced several crashes since then.
Wiki has How to Report Bugs in Logos 4 Mac with steps for posting logs and link to Logos Log Scribe
Different computers and personal usage patterns expose various bugs; having repeatable steps along with appropriate logs and screen shot(s) helps Logos developers (and allows adventurous users to replicate).
Having said that, I trust that Logos is working on the bugs and will fix them soon.
Have experienced Logos fixing many bugs; not know timing for fixes since Beta releases are now typically every 2 weeks during a development cycle.
Yep. It was a comment made in frustration. I own an IT company so fully understand the concept of Beta etc.. However my issue was with the fact that people were not even able to download it to test!!! Basic internal testing should be done before releasing it. That was all.....
I don't know everybody's system, but I have an idea what caused these download failures. Beta 1 had a bug which caused downloads to freeze. If anyone attempted to upgrade from Beta 1 to Beta 2, they would likely get a failure. I downloaded from the Stable and had no problem with the installation. However, Beta 2 would not allow me to log in (I reported that in another thread).
Basic internal testing should be done before releasing it.
Basic testing was performed. The download errors only occur when there is a certain amount of latency on the network, which we did not adequately test.
Has anyone been able to download it yet?
Downloaded it directly, yes.
Where's the link to the 'how to send in log files' - not finding it at the moment. I've installed 4.3B2 and when I launch the app, it hangs with the spinning beach ball, and then traps. If I click reopen, it comes right up without any issues. By the way, it did this before did the direct download / manual install as well.

Thanks Chris.
Here's my log files. It crashes every time it's launched from the app icon. If I select relaunch from the crash report, it opens without issue.2656.Logging.zip
Hope this helps
If you want some real fun, try beta logos on OSX Lion DP2... more crashes than a demolition derby.
Generally, it's best to start a new thread when reporting a crash or bug. Otherwise, it is very easy for your report to slip through the cracks.
That said, I'll file a case for this one, and we'll look into it.
Thank you sir... [:D]
My attempt to download the Beta 2 sticks at 13%
Right-click on the Logos icon on the main Mac toolbar and choose Cancel Download. Then try installing from this link: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LBS4MacInstallerBeta/Logos4Mac.dmg.
Thanks Melissa, that seems to have worked. However, the programs does attempt to download an update and freezes at about 12%. I guess there's a malfunction in the updater. But all is well for now.
Forum Download Stuck and Notes are...Yuck (hey, it rhymes) includes reply from Melissa about download improvements in Beta 3 (next week).
Please fix the download thing. That is the only frustrating thing about beta testing to me.
Oh yes please!
Is there any chance that we'll see an update today?
