Problems Linking TDNT to ESV Interlinear/Strongs Numbers

I'm new to Logos 4.

I want to link my ESV Interlinear with the TDNT.

Hmm. It is working for me from both the NASB and the ESV.

Link Sets are for making two resources scroll in parallel, so they only work with things that have the same type of index (e.g., two or more Bibles or commentaries, which are indexed by scripture reference; or two or more Bible dictionaries which are indexed by an alphabetic list of words).

The feature you need for making sure TDNT opens when you click on a Strongs number in the ESV interlinear is Prioritization. You'll want to prioritize TDNT above all other dictionaries, and then it will be the one that opens when you click on a link appropriate to it (e.g., a Strongs number). Ooops...still doesn't work

I went to the Library Prioritize window which was Initially empty. I added the TDNT (it is the only book in the priority list so I'm guessing it has the top priority). If I click on the Strong's Number in the ESV Interlinear....nothing happens in the TDNT pane.

Any other suggestions from the sages of Logos? I appreciate your patience!

Hope you won't be offended by my question .... you're in the NT in the ESV, correct? I don't normally use the TDNT as top priority, but I prioritized it just to see if ESV pulled it up ... it did. TDNT has a peculiarity of its own numbering system in addition to Strongs. So, if you're in the NT, and TDNT is prioritized, then I'm out of guesses.

But I was able to get it to work using Advanced Prioritization, where you specify precisely what resources you want the TNDT to be linked to. The problem is you'd have to create an Advanced Prioritization for each Bible you normally work with, and that would be a pain. But here's what I did in case you want to try this workaround:

You all understand prioritization better than I do (really; I'm myopic on the internals of our Greek stuff) but a reminder: TDNT does not have all strongs numbers because TDNT does not treat all Greek words. It has extensive theological discussion on a select set of words the original editors deemed appropriate to examine. So there will be things you won't be able to find in TDNT, by strongs or lemma.

Suggestion: Folks who have successfully looked something up from the strongs in the ESV NT Rev Int, share your verse reference and Strongs number to see if it can be reproduced. Folks who haven't, share the reference and strongs number to see if someone else can. Then we can figure out if it is a prioritization issue, or a TDNT-doesn't-have-that-strongs-number issue.

Rick is right. TDNT will open when it has a link, but if there is no word in TDNT with the corresponding SN, then ESL will open as the default.

I just checked, and the one that worked for me after I'd done the Advanced Prioritization was Strongs #4198 in Acts 17:14. But if I hover over adjacent Strongs #s in that same verse, I see ESL (Enhanced Strong's Lexicon) is the only one that has them defined. And in fact, this same works even if I change the Advanced Prioritization back to regular prioritization, so that was a red herring (unintentional). Sorry.

TDNT definitely does not have all Strong's numbers eg it has #1722 but not #2532 in Rev 12:2. ESL has all Strong's numbers.

So Prioritize as:-

TDNT

ESL

The next problem is that TDNT also does not have all Greek words (lemmas) so ESL will be used a lot instead of your preferred lexicon eg. DBL Greek. So let's try this order:-

DBL Greek

TDNT

ESL

We now discover that DBL Greek is preferred for Strong's numbers! So we must use Advanced Prioritization and restrict its type to Greek (lemmas):-

DBL Greek --> restricted to Greek type

TDNT

ESL

You should prioritize at least 5 lexicons but it may affect your preferences for Strong's numbers and/or Greek words eg.

DBL Greek --> restricted to Greek type

Louw-Nida

ANLEX

TDNT

ESL

In this case TDNT is still preferred for Strong's because Louw-Nida and ANLEX do not have Strong's numbers!

Now you can prioritize other resources.

Joe, this works great! However, what I had originally wanted was to click on the Strong's Number in the 'embedded interlinear"....the one that appears below the ESV text. I'm sure I'm not using the correct terminology here, but hopefully you can translate my newby-ese.

However,. if I open the the [Display] drop down in the ESV pane, and select [Inline] and click on the Strong's Number there...it works as advertised. Just like Joe said it would.

So maybe I'll have to create a second pane with the ESV Interlinear Inline and use that. Unless someone else has a wonderful idea?

Appears Louw-Nida Greek-English Lexicon can be prioritized ahead of TDNT. Clicked Strong's # to open TDNT. Clicked Louw-Nida # to open Greek-English Lexicon:
