FW QUESTION: Sentence Diagrams - Where do I start?!

I feel like I'm missing out on a huge resource in Sentence Diagrams. Trouble is I haven't a clue where to start! The wiki doesn't even have an active sentence diagram page, and a search of the forums shows that others have conquered them (and wonderfully shared the fruits of their labours with other users), but I can't find any beginners–guide–style information.

I'd find it really helpful to have some elementary tips on how to make a start on using sentence diagrams, particularly in, say, sermon preparation.

An awesome resource that is available in Logos is "Diagrammatical Analysis". To see if you have it, open your library and in the search field type "title:diagram" (without the quotes) and it will show if you have it.

You won't do any better for learning Reed-Kellog stick style diagramming than Lee Kantenwein's

Don't let the title scare you, it is technical - but he starts you off slow, and with almost more examples than text he teaches you what you need to know to make them. Then in the back of the book he'll teach you how to USE them for sermon preparation and other studies.

The first thing to understand is that the sentence diagram tool has two different modes. Line and Text flow

Line is best for the Reed-Kellog diagrams that you might have learned in grade school. Logos has an excellent introduction to this style: Diagrammatical Analysis which you might already have.

These diagrams are good for understanding the grammatical relationships between words. This helps when an exegetical point hinges on which word modifies which word. Terry Cook has submitted a lot of examples of these kind of diagrams in the Files Forum.

The Text Flow diagram is what I prefer for sermon preparation. I use it to graphically map the relationship between clauses. Independent clauses go to the left and dependent clauses (usually adverbial relationships) are put under the words that the clause modifies. Sometimes I break of phrases too, but that's more of a feel thing, I do it if I think it helps explain the flow to me.
