Indexing Suggestion

OK, I understand the benefit of indexing and the hours to achieve the first index process. A few suggestions:
1. Don't allow L4 to download updates during this process. I was down to 14 min and it downloaded an update and requested a restart. Not knowing the consequences I restarted..
2. Put a pop up suggesting that all software updates that may require a restart should be put on manual, not automatic. Yes, the next morning after allowing the indexing to restart I awoke to find that windows updated... indexing restarted again.
3. Now that I have completed the indexing, can it be sync'd to the Logos server and then used for the next computer I install L4 on or if I need to.. God forbid.. reinstall?
Thanks for listening... btw.. it was worth the wait. I am enjoying L4 greatly.

1) Back in early beta before there was a suplemental index files I was glad to have this feature. However, I understand what you mean, and this this merits thought.
2) Microsoft's antisocial behavior of automatically restarting in the middle of your computer doing work is really a Microsoft issue. However, yes, maybe Logos should warn that during the install we might want to turn off Windows update
3) It is a big file and I don't know if I really want to spend the time uploading it all the way to Logos, having Logos store each person's individual record, etc. But I do think it would be a good idea if somehow users could save time and transfer instalations across a home network or something.

1. Agree 100%. I got caught out by the last update and I've been using the program for 6 or 7 weeks.
2. This should be very clearly detailed in the install instructions as well. I got caught out twice by this one during the Beta. Once during Beta1 when indexing took well over 24 hours for half the resources I have now.
3. The index is enormous (mine's 5GB). Not much chance of syncing that! For 6 weeks, every now and again, the question has been raised - can't we just copy and paste it to the other computer.... There has to be a way. Personally, as in iTunes 9, I think that home networking needs to be worked on so as to allow syncing of everything without the internet.

Kenneth, it may be "antisocial" but Logos is writing a program for Windows not the other way around. Assume that 90% of users have not altered this setting since install - this is the Logos model.

I didin't even know there WERE install instructions. I really don't even know what I am doing. All I know is that I have 10 gigs to dowload, and it started at 3 pm yesterday and is 80% done at ca. 10 am this morning! Holy Cow!
Where can I go to know what i need to do to get everything running and installed correctly. A lot of this discussion makes little sense to me since I have not (yet) experienced problems (other than slow slow slow) and I am a bit apprehensive about problems I "may" encounter.
And I am eager to start playing around with my new toy. I mean, tool.I like Apples. Especially Honeycrisp.

I don't think there are... BUT there should be!!!!!
A bit more information would have saved a huge amount of heartache and a fair number of headaches.
I can't believe that it says nowhere that you need to turn off Windows Updating or that you should most definitely NOT install any updates while indexing is occurring (unless you really like indexing).
As to the slow download. Sorry, can't help or explain.....
But, goodness gracious you have a lot of time indexing ahead of you....

One other suggestion that I figured out the hard way is while indexing change your computers power performance to prevent your computer's hard disk from turning off during inactivity. I thought I'd just leave my computer for a few hours and come back to see the indexing finished. I was wrong...the hard disk powered down and indexing stopped.

AFTER you finish Downloading comes a bit step for installation - indexing. In order for searches to work (and all the automatic reports are created by various searches) Logos has to read your whole library and create a master index of what all is where. This takes a lot of time and system resources. Until you do this, you can read books but that is about it.
In a very real sense, you don't have to do anything - just let Logos take care of it. The problem is that if Logos is interupted, it has to start over again from the beginning, and this can take a LONG time You do not want to have your computer turn off and restart for any reason during this, including for system updates, and because indexing is so system resource intensive, it can make the rest of your programs sluggish. You can pause indexing by clicking on the icon and it will restart in 4 hours or when you say it can.
My computer is a 2 1/2 year old Core 2 with only 1 GB. Indexing happens much faster if I turn off as many background processes and close out as many programs as possible, so that it can use as much memory as possible. I can continue to use my computer during indexing, but it becomes a bit slugish, and sometimes indexing slows to a crawl. Because of this, I try to index or reindex overnight so that it doesn't get in the way as much.
Short form - you should finally get to enjoy the Logos 4 experience either late tonight or tomorrow. Believe it or not, indexing IS better and faster than the early Betas. We just didn't have to DL as much at the beginning. Over the Beta period we DLed more, but we didn't have as many new resources at the beginning.
