HOW TO: Move Resources in LOGOS4 to another HardDrive (NON SUPPORTED)

THIS IS NON SUPPORTED BY LOGOS

ONLY TESTED ON VISTA (I dont think it works on XP, and I dont have Windows 7 to test but believe it should work)

VERY IMPORTANT: IF you dont know what a ADMINISTRATOR COMMAND PROMPT is STOP NOW!! 

YOU NEED TO BE HAPPY WITH COMMAND LINE STUFF, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!  IF YOU MAKE AN ERROR YOUR L4 WILL BE BROKEN AND YOU WILL HAVE TO REINSTALL

1. after install completes indexing restart PC
2. open resource folder and make a note of path (Default is:
   C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\<RANDOM>\ResourceManager\Resources
3. MOVE the resources folder to new location,  you need admin rights
4. open Administrator command prompt
5. type: mklink /J    full_L4_dir     full_where_they_are_now 
6. You should get a message saying "Junction Created"

Start Logos4 should not notice any difference

Semi Technical Explaination:

what this does is like the old dos subst command, which I am sure you remember well, it mounts the new location into the place expected for L4, and the program is none the wiser.

AS SAID ITS AT YOUR OWN RISK = if it breaks dont call Logos Support

Should work on Win 7 also.  You can mount a drive to a folder like this in the management console/disk maintenance section.

If you need admin rights to carry out this procedure, you may be doing something wrong, and may break Logos 4's ability to automatically update resources or the program itself. (I have personally done this without an administrator command prompt, and that's the only way I  would recommend doing it—if at all.) Logos 4 is designed to run as a standard user; creating any of the folders that it uses with an "elevated administrator" token is likely to cause problems.

And just to repeat what DominicM already stressed (and if you didn't see it when he typed it out, I'm not sure that repeating it here will do any good...): if you make a mistake with this procedure, you can significantly damage your Logos 4 installation. The "Logos 4" folder "contains no user-serviceable components" and Customer Service cannot help troubleshoot an installation customised in this way.

I tried it on my Vista laptop and it worked for me.  I moved the whole Logos4 folder, not just resources, and I gained another 4 GB or so in addition to the 7 GB of resources, for a total of 11 GB (on a laptop that can be a lot).

I was kind of confused about what full_L4_dir meant, so I searched the web and found a few examples where it's just the complete path name in quotes.  My command line looked like this:

Mklink /J “C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Logos4”
“D:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Logos4"

I don't know if you need the quotes, but I put them in anyway.  It's important to move the entire folder to the new location - don't leave an empty folder behind.

There's also a way to remove the link in case you don't want it.  I found an article here:

Supported alternative is custom installing Logos 4 into a folder on a different drive (avoids need for making a junction).

Note: on a new laptop, partitioned 640 GB hard drive with 40 GB in fastest transfer area (outer edge of disk) for Logos 4 use, then installed Windows 7 into second partition.  Used Quick Installation onto multiple computers => Method 2 with custom Logos 4 installation to my fast drive partition "F:\username\Logos4", which is working.  My personal book docx files are on a slower partition, only compiled personal books are in my fast access Logos4 folder.

Future upgrade option: could add a Solid State Disk (SSD) to laptop, close Logos 4, copy F: drive from hard disk to SSD, then change drive letter assignments.

I have been running this way on Win 7 since I installed L4 on my work laptop with no problems.

(My harddrive is configured with a small C partition and a large "D" partition.)

There's nothing special about moving the Logos folder, the OS still respects the link.

It worked fine, freeing up 8GB on my C: partition. Just took some time to display the resources but they were all there, no indexing necessary.
