Library Indexing
I just purchased Logos Scholar Silver and began the download 24 hours ago. My system still says: "First-time indexing underway" yet I see no progress info telling me how much has been completed. Is it possible that it is still indexing after all this time? Should I wait over night (again) and let it continue to run?

Welcome to the forums Edward!
There should be a Logos emblem in your system tray that should display a status report when you hover your cursor over it.

It is no longer there. Does that mean it is finished even though this message is on my homepage?

Yes it should be finished then. Try running some searches, does it look like the results are good? How's your CPU usage, is it being heavily used?

Yes...that all looks good and my cpu usage is low. Looks like I'm all set. Thanks for the confirmation...

Problem! I closed Logos and reopened and it began indexing again. It had the Logos icon in my system tray and it said 4% complete. I left it for an hour and came back and hovered over the icon and it disappeared and cannot be found. I still have the message "First-time indexing underway" on my home screen. Thoughts?

I have stopped Logos twice and restarted the program (even powered down my pc and restarted it). Each time it begins indexing, but terminates at 5% and says that Logos is looking for a solution...but it never provides a solution...

dont restart your PC while it is indexing, or it begins again, if you need to power it down, use hibernate... I suggest start it when you go to bed and hopefully will be complete by time you wake up

Edward,
Sorry to hear the indexing is crashing. What we need to do now is grab some Diagnostic Logs to figure out what the problem is. Follow that link for instructions how to turn logging on. Start Logos (and the indexing process) after it crashes upload those logs to this thread or start a new one.

I am afraid to ask this but does this "Don't shut down but hibernate instead" rule apply any time Logos 4 is indexing? Or only when Logos 4 is indexing for the first time? I have had very few indexing crashes over the years but for some unknown reason my Logos 4 is "indexing for the first time" again.
edit: (I did power off the netbook Friday night and I do believe it was indexing a few updated resources.[:'(])
My installation in question is on a rather slow Acer Aspire One netbook with 2GB RAM and 92GB free space on a 220GB drive. There is no crash report dated more recent than 02/14/2012. My interpretation of that file tells me not to be updating both Libronix and Logos 4 at the same time. [:$]
The current "first time indexing" is 8% complete after 8 hours of running. Will it take another 92 hours to complete? I have 10,210 resources in this library. I need to know how to avoid this in the future. I do not want to trigger another 100 hour indexing every time I download a free Vyrso book.

Wow ST, old thread!
To answer your questions, yes, shutting down in the middle of indexing will make you lose your index. Standby or hibernate is the way to go if you can't keep the computer going.
The percentage indicator, as far as I can tell, is not a true percent of work done, but a percentage of the number of books completed. So if I had 100 books finishing the index on one would add 1%, whether a skinny Vyrso book or a massive dictionary.
I would suggest that you use Method 1 or 2 to take the index off a more powerful computer and avoid this long process. http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers

Thank you for your quick and helpful reply. I searched the Wiki and forums extensively before posting. It looks a little bad when an MVP doesn't know these things but my personal experience with Logos indexing has been remarkably positive.Kevin Becker said:Wow ST, old thread!
I will try to let it index uninterrupted but will definitely not just shut it down from now on. I was trying to give the little netbook a break.Kevin Becker said:Standby or hibernate is the way to go if you can't keep the computer going.
. I have successfully done that with PC to PC before. Will it work with a Mac index to PC index? (I know, go read the Wiki! [:P]) Jack & Alabama24 are rolling on the floor laughing at me now.Kevin Becker said:I would suggest that you use Method 1 or 2 to take the index off a more powerful computer and avoid this long process.

I don't know. I doubt it though. If you try and can get it to work make a note on the wiki, cause I don't think it's there.

I just read the articles and it doesn't look too promising. But how bad can I mess up a PC by cloning my Mac?? [^o)] I was reading Bradley Grainger's instructions on using an external drive to store Logos 4 data. I thought I might just try using an external drive as a boot-able system drive and only index with my faster CPU & hardware.

Direct copy of Mac index to PC index does not work since some of the SQLite database files include computer path to resource files. Mac and PC have different file system conventions, which are not interchangeable. Apologies: personally have not tried to clone complete Logos 4 folder from Mac to PC, then deal with corresponding file path changes internal to Logos SQLite database files.
Wiki Logos 4 Mac => Need Logos 4 PC feature? includes virtualization and Boot Camp options to run Microsoft Windows on a Mac, which would allow Logos 4 Windows indexing to be done on a Mac, which could be copied to netbook.

If desire NO usable resources in Logos 4 Windows, then can copy entire Logos 4 folder from Mac to PC. [:P]
If was shopping for an ultrabook to use with Logos 4 with usable performance, would look at Apple refurbished 2011 MacBook Air models with 4 GB RAM => http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook_air
Anticipating MacBook Air model refreshes later this year, which should be accompanied by refurbished price drop.
For ultrabook hardware, Apple's refurbished MacBook Air models currently offer the best value: e.g. $ 999 => http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC969LL/A (1.6 GHz i5, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 1366 x 768 on 11" screen) with $100 more being bit faster and larger screen => http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC965LL/A (1.7 GHz i5, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 1440 x 900 on 13" screen) while weighing a tad under 3 pounds.
Keep Smiling [:)]

Strange behavior though. It was still creeping slowly at 85% and suddenly Logos downloaded 156MB of whatever and the indexing was complete.
Now I have to stall my Philip Schaff Collection from downloading until I get ths newly indexed installation on a USB stick, or wherever.
