I read the blurb from Nelson on the book. I noted the comment regarding his interchange with opposing players on 1st. I really find that off-putting. One's influence on others is generally not to be effected through hit-and-run tactics. One can best influence others by as regular and sustained life and conversation. I remember once being accosted by some nitwit in a Costco in Virginia. He felt it his duty to give me the full-boat testimony. Everything in me was crying out to tell him he was making a mockery of the faith, but I restrained myself. Most often I think those who engage in such "witness" are mostly witnessing to their desire to appear to be religious — in their own eyes.

I haven't read it yet. If I remember, I will tell you what I think when I do. One difference between your experience and the one you described from the book is that Albert knows the players he is talking to. The guy at Costco didn't. (That was me, by the way [:P])

How very sad that you feel this way. I am most impressed with Pujols and his witness. And I'm a Milwaukee Brewers fan who has now seen his team beaten twice by the Cards (1982 WS and this year).
The bible says that word does not return void so anytime a witness goes out with a sincere heart it is blessed. Also, Paul said that a witness even with wrong motives can be used by God for his glory.
I only wish I had more boldness to help people around me learn of the grace of Jesus Christ.

Being in favor of boldness does not entail foolhardy recklessness. Grabbing someone by the collar, shaking him and asking "Are you saved, brother" is not the most effective method of furthering the gospel. We don't need hit-and-run evangelism. True, God can do whatever he jolly well pleases including speaking to a person "through a dead dog" as Barth says in his Kirchliche Dogmatiek (or through a braying jackass) or things could fly away from one another rather than being attracted. There are certain laws which pertain to all aspects of creation including psychology. The first rule is to make your witness attractive to the one who is its object.
EDIT: To fail to observe the laws by which God has created and maintains the universe is in itself sin since sin is the failure to observe God's laws. Hit-and-run evangelism may boost the ego of the would-be evangelist but it generally accomplishes no good.

George,
have you ever heard the true story of the guy who witnessed on "George Street" in Australia?
You might want to give it a listen.
he was described as "acosting" people, "attacking" them, being "obnoxious" "rude" and all manner of things...also kind, and loving....
But the bottom line in this story is that this man witnessed to people for 20 years in this same place...coming up to people in a bold witness that has been described like I did above...and God used him to save thousands....
So...that's all that I wanted to point out.
Here is the video/audio

Then you consistently break the first rule. Many have pointed out how abrasive and obnoxious your remarks are. You simply joke about the counsel. You seem to think if anyone disagrees with you, they are ignorant. How Hypocritical and arrogant. Well, I may be the forum curmudgeon, but here all, or most of us, are commited to the gospel. On the street we cannot assume this. Here we should be able to speak the truth — indeed, it should be imperative that we do so. So, peace to you, brother. I really don't care much about your opinion of me.

Are you holding this up as the standard by which we are to pattern our lives? We are admonished in the gospels to be "wise as serpents." I don't think that being wise involves being rude and acosting people. Besides, it seems that such rests upon a misconception of salvation as fire insurance. Salvation involves the transformation of one's life here and now without regard to any hereafter.

A most predictable response. I fear you do err in your assessment of forum readers. All are not theologians. Many are baby Christians. Their sensitivities should be considered the same as the folks "on the street." Hiding behind a pet name does not excuse your offensive comments. I didn't say they were theologians, and they need not be such. I'm not simply concerned about "sensitivities" by themselves. "Sensitivities" is what gives us political correctness where we hesitate to speak the truth and end up dancing around a subject. As Sgt Friday (Jack Webb) used to say in the program "Dragnet", "Just the facts, ma'am."

There is a difference in justification, and self-justification. You are defending your actions...the very actions you attacked Pujols for. Even worse you attacked him based on hearsay. You haven't even read the book. [:(]

I haven't seen exactly this, but sometimes it comes dangerously close. No, I don't go to the park to see the games and I haven't watched TV for about 15 yrs (I even got rid of mine) so I haven't seen Pujols do this. I'm simply going by the blurb from Nelson.

George,
I must say you come across unusually immature in these comments for one who is usually so wise. Yours is a most unfair caricature of Pujols' evangelism, and a most unchristian attitude. Besides that, many people have been won to Christ through methods that I don't like. Street preachers have probably caused more angels to dance and celebrate in heaven than seminaries. We are not all alike. Whatever it takes.
Pujols reminds me of Bobby Richardson, whose testimony to fellow ballplayers was instrumental in changing many lives. God delights to use the foolish.
Me? I come across pompous all the time.

Calling Albert's method of evangelism "hit and run" is very funny considering the baseball imagery. It is also very inaccurate. Albert is doing what we all should do. He is witnessing to the people in his work place when the opportunity is presented. These are not people "off the street corner." These are Albert's professional colleagues. We should take Albert's example to heart.
Soli Deo Gloria,
Randy

Is it really? I would consider making a brief comment or slightly extended comment then leaving base (literally or figuratively) as being hit-and-run as opposed to one's daily interaction with another as co-worker, neighbor, friend, etc. What is needed is a life in interchange with others not a 30 sec to 5 min commercial.
I can see it now, "Jesus saves at Waxahatchee Bowlers' Federal Credit Union."
