Lag- Wifi question

We have been experimenting with Proclaim on Sundays. It seems we always run into a lag using remote I-pad. It occurred to us that this may be due to multiple devices using the connection. These include the presentation computer and remote Ipad as well as any other devices that congregation may be using while connected to church's wifi.... Could we be overloading the wifi and slowing it down? Any recommendations about the best approach to this?

You can saturate a wifi connection, but there is to help mitigate the slowdown. Most modern wireless routers let you have multiple SSIDs (the SSID is the name of your network). You could then create one (your church internal) that is password protected and reserve it for your main presentation equipment, and have a second (your church Guest) that is open to the public. You can then give your internal network priority so that when things on the network get busy it will throttle your guest network and maintain the quality of service on your internal wifi.

Again, most wireless routers are capable of doing this, you will just need to hunt down a good geek to get it configured properly.

If using a wireless router designed for home use, only can set one Service Set Identifier (SSID). Option: purchase another home wireless router for use with different SSID (and quality of service priority).

Along with segregating presentation wireless network from public, may want to check wireless channel(s) being used. Free tool, inSSIDer 2, shows wireless signal contention for all wireless channels => http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ Note: wireless channels 1, 6, and 11 do not have radio signal overlap. Thankful inSSIDer shows radio frequency curves (e.g. Wi-Fi router using channel 6 has signal strength in channels 4 through 8).

Inside Church, walking around with a laptop running inSSIDer can show wireless signal contention in various parts of auditorium. Many home wireless routers now have signals that cover hundreds of feet (or meters).

For password protection, currently recommend using WPA2 with AES (since older WEP encryption is essentially a speed bump; can be decrypted in real time).
