Detailed Instructions about how one goes about installing L4 Alpha for Mac (Snow Leopard)

I posted this earlier and received no replies. Since then I have discovered this Beta forum.

I am looking to install Mac Alpha tonight and would like detailed instructions on how to go about it, including:

If I download the the Alpha via my L4 purchase, is this the latest release?
How else could I go about downloading it
What do I do once it is downloaded?
Are there any other tips or instructions?

The reason I ask these questions is, like others, I have been having problems with the installer. My Fan is going a million miles an hour and my RAM is at full use - I have also noticed that nothing is being downloaded when all this is going on!

I'm not what I would call a techno-geek and am unfamiliar with how to find out what is happening on my Mac - I just turn it on and go! Geeked

Mark,

It's very likely the program is indexing your library. This will take a long time (took about 15 hours or more for me). There should be a LOGOS icon in your upper toolbar. If you place your cursor over it, it should tell you that it is indexing and the approximate time left. You can also pause it form here if you need ot do other tasks and it is maxing out your computer. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Can you, or anyone else tell me if this will happen if I wait for the DVD? 15 hours is far too long to be waiting and having a CPU maxing out.

Run the file and install like any other Mac program by dragging the file into your applications folder.

The software is working to Index. There is no downloading during the indexing process, but it is very resource intensive. That is normal for this stage in Alpha development. Improvements will come later as the software is developed.

the current DVD from Logos has no media on it. You will still need to download and install from the Logos servers.

I am not sure, but I do not think the current DVD from Logos has the Alpha on it. That is only found here. One the program is complete and resources updated, the DVVD will have both software versions and the resources. Development is not that far yet.

Yeah, but you should have seen how bad it was int eh first couple Beta versions before Logos optimized the process. In some regards, the Mac Alpha is already ahead of the windows Beta. It may not seem that way, but IMHO, the Alpha is ahead of the windows beta (at least in regard to the couple things we can test). I say that hopefully to encourage folks to hang in there. :-)

I'm wondering what in the world they (Logo Makers) were thinking letting the program take your mac over and max it up to 99% running the mac like crazy. I'm a business owner and I use my mac for business and personal, it's crucial that I'm able to use my mac, I can't just let it sit for 15 hours while it downloads and indexes whatever it has to.

QUESTION: Are there any Logo support techs responding or is this just a bunch of users helping each other out? Don't get me wrong, that's great - but where are the support techs?

Can we get some professional help please? Your application can not take over my computer and run it up to 99%, drive the fans like crazy, and overtake the entire system. This type of action is what stresses out computer systems and damages them. You can't really think it's OK to just let your application drive the users entire system into oblivion? We need a fix!

It is a long standing axiom that Alpha and Beta test software is not recommended for daily use machines. As a business owner myself (I am currently a bi-vocational pastor), I also know that making uninformed decisions is not good business. With all due respect, you should have known what you were doing before you installed.

Jonathan, the reason some of us are here helping is because Bob P. (the president of Logos) asked us during the Windows Beta testing process to come in and help out. And while I am not coding this program, I do have some background in design and programming and so do several of the others helping out. The Techs are busy designing software and fixing bugs and the more questions we answer the less time wasted. I don't know what kind of business you are in Jonathan, but I have learned over the years that good information is good no matter what the source. But if you prefer to dismiss the help as "just a bunch of users" that is your call brother.

Jonathan, of course we need a "fix" as you call it, it is Alpha software. In the meantime, I already answered this above. This indexing process is not optimized for the Mac. It will improve as it did for the Windows Beta version as the developers continue their work. If you cannot afford to have it take over your system, then do not use it until later in the process. There is no "help" just for you brother. Either use it as is at your own risk or wait. I am sorry to say that those are your only options at this time.

I am puzzled. Indexing took around 36 hours on my machine (2400+ resources), but it did not take over my Mac. I still ran L4 on Windows with Fusion, ran Microsoft Office, a Relational Database, Safari, and a few other things all while A-3 was indexing. It seems that you are running your business on an underpowered machine.

It's an Alpha Release. That means it is not for the faint-hearted. It also means bugs, crashes, wailing and gnashing of teeth.
