BUG: iPad Controller failed

We have been using Proclaim now for some months and have had intermittent problems with controlling the presentation from the front via an iPad1. Usually the error results in the message, 'Error: Cannot display slide'. Latterly, the controller was able to exit the presentation and resume control (by hitting control) and then proceed with the presentation. Last week, the iPad app booted the controller and would not allow them to resume control.
This morning, for the first time in a month, we were able to run a presentation from the iPad app without incident (no error messages and the presentation was responsive).
Unfortunately, however, the iPad app again failed this evening. Although we were able to enter control mode the presentation would not advance via the controller. We received the above error message (Cannot display slide) numerous times. Strangely the app was sycing in as much as advancing at the desktop end caused the remote app to progress in sync. We were unable, however, to control the app via the remote.
We tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app with no success.
As the desktop end did not crash we do not have any logs to upload.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, whether it is a known issue and whether a fix is on the way.

I've had a very similar issue using a MacBook Pro and an iPad2 both connected wirelessly to our network. However, when using a Windows desktop connected to our network via a LAN and the iPad wirelessly connected to our network I did not have any issues.

We are adding some logging and other diagnostics to debug the reliability issues with the remote. Please let us know when/if you encounter them again, along with any pertinent details. Thanks for your patience.

Dear Scott,
Just to let you know that we ran the remote app this morning to greater success inasmuch I was able to complete the sermon presentation without the desktop end having to take over.
We are running the presentation from a desktop PC and controlling the presentation with the iOS remote via an iPad 1, 32GB (3G).
However, I experienced a number of anomalies.
Specifically,
1. It took a couple of efforts to log into the remote app and, when it did, it took a long time to load up the preview presentations and took between three to five minutes to detect the 'On Air' presentation.
2. Initially, when accessing the preview of this morning's presentation (before it went on air) the sizing of the screen was not correct (a thick black border to the right of the screen). I remedied this by signing out and signing back in.
3. When controlling the presentation, I was booted out three times with the error message, 'cannot change slide'. Each time I successfully reselected the on air presentation and was able to resume control. It was moderately distracting though.
4. I think I have identified a bug (I will try and replicate this later). It seems that the iOS app cannot take control when the presentation is paused via the quick screen. We tend to fire up the church logos between sections of the services. I attempted to take control of the presentation at this stage and although it allowed me to go into the on air presentation, I was unable to select and advance beyond the quick screen slide. I have noticed this behaviour previously. It only registered this morning that it may be a replicable bug.
There are no crash logs as the desktop end did not crash.
Please let me know should you require any further information.

This is a known issue. We hope to improve the performance of the Remote app in future updates.

This is a known issue. We will be resolving this as we release updates to the remote.

We have had the same error message "cannot change slide" on both the iPhone 4 and iPad 1, over 3G and WiFi. Thank you for submitting this to the developers for review.

Really excited about the possibilities with Proclaim. We have been using it about a month, but we have been having some problems...
(1) From the beginning the desktop program would freeze, so I purchased a new i5 computer with plenty of memory and power...doesn't freeze as often, but still occasionally continues to...
(2) Initially I was able to use the android app on my Xoom and Motorola Droid to access and control the display; however, for about a week now, I can log into the app, but I am unable to control or view any of the presentations. I have uninstalled/reinstalled without success.
Since we are swiftly approaching the end of free use, would really appreciate a response.

we are having similar issues as well. we open it on our desktop, but accessing it from the ipad shows multiple presentation as "on air" but none of them can be opened.

I just wanted to report that, after four weeks of acceptable (although not flawless) performance, yesterday, we again experienced problems in controlling the presentation via the iPad app.
The performance in the morning service was acceptable, although the presenter did get booted early in the sermon presentation. The performance during the evening service was unacceptable with the presenter being booted on several occasions. Each time the error message reads: 'cannot change slide'.
Before running the presentation, we always ensure that screen rotation lock is on, the screen lock is off and all other apps are shut down. Despite this, we are still struggling to realise consistent performance using the the remote app.
I was wondering if this issue is still being addressed and whether there is a timeline for resolution.
I also want to be honest with regards to where we are with Proclaim.
As a church we believe the package to be hugely promising and, were the software to deliver consistently, we would have no hesitation in purchasing. However, given the issues with the controller, the synchronisation issues (particular when using Mac, reported elsewhere) and limitations in customising multiple slides, I am now struggling to make the case. In moving to Proclaim, we will be writing off a recently purchased upgrade to a competitor. Although the competitor does not utilise the cloud, it works consistently.
I personally want to go with Proclaim, but the church will need to be convinced that this is a mature and reliable product before they will be willing to subscribe. Given the continuing issues and limitations in some key areas, I am not sure that it is achievable to provide this confidence before the trial period expires.
I do not intend to be negative, but I expect that our position is reflective of that of other churches. I do appreciate all of your hard work and kind assistance.
Please let me know if you require any further information re: the above bug.

When you say booted do you mean you lose control of the presentation and you are moved to the presentation list view?

What specifically was slow? slide generation on the remote? navigation delay?

Yes, we still plan to spend time on the remote. With the exception of some server side changes we have been giving %100 of our time working on stability/performance issues for the Windows and Mac clients. We are also going to ship an iPad specific version which adds support for things like speaker notes.
Thanks for your detailed feedback.

This is correct. Each time the presenter was able to resume control by clicking okay and then control, but it was a little distracting.

The main issue was the number of occasions in which the controller was booted. I have been thinking about this during the week and wonder if it might perhaps be significant that the performance of the remote controller has been consistently and significantly worse during the evening services. I have used the remote app four weeks in a row and experienced nearly flawless performance (booted on two occasions over the four services). On each of these four occasions, however, I was using the controller during the morning services. Interestingly, the performance of the app this Sunday morning was similarly acceptable.
The problems we experienced occurred during the first Sunday evening in which we have used the remote app in that four week run.
Given our timezone (GMT), I wonder if the increased traffic (as the USA come online) is a contributing factor to the apparent deterioration in performance between the morning and evening service? You are, of course, better placed to evaluate this. For your information, the evening service begins at 18:00 (GMT) and the remote app is in use between 18:20 and 19:00 (GMT).
I am also informed that, particularly during the evening service, the performance of the slide navigation was a little clunky and the scrolling was a little inconsistent (i.e. it took time for the app to locate the active slide and there was noticeable lag in navigation).
In summary, the main issue this week pertains to the app booting out the controller.

Thank you very much for this helpful feedback. We are really excited about the potential of the software and the ability to remotely control the presentation is one of the most appealing and potentially useful features. We look forward to improvements in this area and are grateful for all your assistance and efforts.

This is really exciting. I have, since Christmas, dispensed with paper notes and relied entirely on the app as a preaching prompt. The addition of notes will be incredibly welcome.
Thank you once again, Scott. Please let me know if you require any further information.
God bless,
Andy

I just wanted to update this thread.
We have had a couple of weeks (i.e. since my last post) whereby the performance of the controller has been acceptable (i.e. either no boots or a minimal and manageable level of boots). This week, however, we appear to have experienced a significant regression in performance.
On Tuesday evening (19:00 GMT), we were booted (error message, 'Cannot change slide') and were unable to resume control of the presentation despite logging in and out of the remote app. We were using an iPhone 4 at the time.
This morning (11:15 GMT) we attempted to use the controller app via an iPad 1 (our typical controller). Unfortunately, I was booted out (error message 'Cannot change slide') on perhaps ten occasions mid-presentation. I was, however, able to resume control each time.
I have not uploaded the logs as there were no issues at the desktop end (PC). Please let me know if you require any further information.
I will be using the controller this evening (18:00 GMT) and will report back should anything notable occur.
Thank you for your assistance.

This seems to be the same problem I had reported this morning.
One reason for trying to use the IPad to controll the presentation is that our remote mouse does not work to advance the slides during the sermon. I would very much like to be able to use the remote control rather than IPad or some other device. Is this in development or is there a way to set up the mouse to advance slides?

Strange Gary - my little Mac remote (the one that used to come 'free' with a Mac) works fine.
I would investigate the settings on your remote mouse.tootle pip
