Need VGA splitter for dual monitor?

I'd like to use a secondary monitor that displays the same signal that is sent to the projector, because our projector screen is a little difficult to see from where our computer is setup. Do I need to just get a VGA splitter to do this, or is there a better way? Thanks!

Most projectors have a second socket to drive a monitor screen - usually used to stop the speaker having to turn round to see what is being projected.

On the attached example the socket is labeled 6

Josh I speculate there would be one long cord going from your projector to your second monitor correct? What Mac are you running (or rather what Mac port would be receiving that VGA cord from the projector)? There might be an option to send the signal from the VGA port (as Mike showed) to your computer wirelessly.

[EDIT] - after doing a short search for "wireless VGA connections" it looks like this addition could cost you anywhere from $100 to over $500.

Maybe Hunter C. or another Proclaim user could tell us if a separate monitor coming from a port on the back of the Mac could display the output the projector is displaying. Then all you would need is a $30 cord from Best Buy or most Big Box retailers.

We use a VGA splitter that also amplifies the signal. Not only can we send an image to two different projectors or monitors but we get a better image on our primary projector than we did before. This option also eliminates a long cable back from the projector and any potential wireless problems. So for us it was a better solution than the others that have been suggested here.

Eric, can you post a link where I could buy the splitter/amplifier you use? I was worried about using a splitter and getting poorer quality.

There are potentially several options available, but you'd need to have the ability to run 3 monitors from your Mac or PC.

You could set it up like this:

[monitor 1] [monitor 2] -- mirrored -- > [projector]

With the editor window on Monitor 1 and the Presentation window on monitor 2 and the projector.

This is dependent on the number of feeds your video card can support. You might potentially have to purchase and install additional video card(s) in order to make this happen.

Of course there are also options for splitters and using the Projector itself as previously mentioned.

We are currently using Proclaim and have a powered VGA splitter that sends a feed to our projector as well as a reference monitor for the display team.

You can find it at Amazon for less than $30. It will push a signal as far as 300 feet if necessary, but it is best in the 150 foot range.

Josh I'm sorry I didn't see your question sooner. I went to tigerdirect.com and searched for vga splitter. We got the Star Tech 2 port splitter. We have had it for about a year and have had no difficulty with it. We have our laptop in the balcony at our church. The projector is hanging from the ceiling obviously closer to the front of the room connected to the splitter with a 100 ft VGA cable. We added a second projector in our balcony for our worship leader and choir or praise band to see.

I apologize again for the delayed response. I will try to watch better this time.
