Nook App

With all the great deals on books available through Vyrso, I would love to read them on my Nook Color.

I have loaded the android app on my Nook, but when the library comes up, I can never get past all the books that begin with "A".  Since my Nook is dependent on WiFi, an app that allows me to only load the books I want to just read would be great.

Any plans for a Nook app?

Tracy - First, welcome to the forums!

I am a bit confused. You write that you loaded the android app on your Nook, and then you ask if there are plans for a Nook app. I am neither a Nook nor Andriod user, but I am confused by your comments. Can you explain more?

When the library is loaded, can't you just type the name of the book you want?

I should let you know that the iOS app is much further along in development, including some library sorting features.

    Tracy,

This search lists threads on using Nook to read Vyrso. Maybe they can help.

    Thanks Alabama for the note.

My Nook Color has a tiny card that I loaded with the android system.  However, it still requires WiFi.

Nook Color has it's own apps...  So, one machine, two systems.

I don't think the WiFi part of the Nook is really designed for this because it is so slow.  So paging thru a long list is not ideal.

I just tried opening the Vyrso App and typing in the name of a book and it crashed.  Now it won't open the app at all.

It was my hope that there would be a way to read the books offline.  The nook is perfect for that.

There is software that will convert PDF files for readability on the nook and I have loaded many things that way.  I understand that Vyrso books are in Logos format, which I understand.

I was hoping to take advantage of the great sale prices on novels to read on my nook.

I use the Logos app on the Nook Color.  It works very well--that said, there are some shortcomings.

The Android app is less advanced than the iOS app--it is fairly new & features seem to initially offer via iOS, then Android.

Library navigation for large libraries is tedious.  If you need to sync up the list of books, it is best to wait until that is done (a blue bar builds across the top of the screen when this happens). Browsing is possible, but you are much better off to just find what you want on the full version (PC or Mac), and then type that title into the mobile version's library search box.

You can download resources to read them offline.  However, you have to do this one by one...and if you share Logos accounts on your mobile device, the Logos app will remove all downloaded books every time a different user signs into the Logos app (to ensure resource separation).  When you are looking at a resource in the library, click on the green arrow to the right and you'll see the download option.

When you are offline and you go to the library, the only resources that will show up are those that you downloaded--I find this to be a much easier way of navigating the library (only seeing the subset that interests me).

What options are there for those of us that haven't rooted our nook color devices?  Any possibility of the vyrso or logos apps being sold through the Barnes & Noble nook store?

In a different thread, quite a while ago, Logos answered this question.  I don't recall the thread, but the answer was something like "we don't plan to"...although they did release an app for the Kindle Fire when it later came out.

Ward, can you give some guidance on how to load the logos android app onto the nook color?

Brian - If you don't get the help you need here, you might want to try posting a new thread in the ANDRIOD forum.

I ran a rooted android system on my Nook color and all I can say is it sucked. Apps constantly crashed or wouldn't load correctly. Finally I gave up and went back to my iPad. The iPad has Nook and Kindle apps along with Vyrso and Logos. I would recommend an iPad to everyone and would highly discourage everyone away from the Nook.

P.S.- Anyone want to buy a gently used Nook Color?

    Brian,

Read the threads you'll find here and it shows how I did it for the Color Nook with a specific brand of 8GB MicroSDHC.

I highly suggest picking a stable (not nightly) Android build from the site that the thread references--you want a stable OS.  That said, I put up with an occasional OS crash.  Over time I've learned that whatever build I used didn't do power management for the WiFi well--I compensate by leaving WiFi disabled unless I need to use it.  However, the second bug in my OS build is that WiFi doesn't become fully functional very quickly--and if I enter an app that expects it to be working (before it really is), then I'll get an application crash.  If I forget to turn off WiFi, then the battery eventually discharges and the Color Nook for some reason boots back into the normal B&N OS.

For me, Logos works well on the Color Nook--I especially like to run it with white text on a black background--it *really* saves eyestrain for me.  That said, since the iOS version has many more features that I desire and the larger size of it iPad//promise of wonderful resolution make the new iPad a much desired device--I just can't justify spending cash on it right now.

    Alan:

For those of us who lack the $$$ for an IPad, my Nook works just fine.  I use Calibre for loading books on my  Nook and haven't had any problems.  Have hundreds of books on it from a variety of vendors including Vyrso.

    Calvin,

Are you saying that Calibre "reads" Vyrso books?  Or do you covert Vyrso/Logos books using Calibre??  Sounds interesting for books that you just want to read while out and about.

    My tablet history:

I started with an Android Phone with a 4.3 screen.  Worked ok for the occasional reading.

I soon caught a deal on a Nook Color (long before the Nook Tablet came out). By the way, I have bought two factory refurbished models of the Nook Color and booth appeared to be brand new at a greatly reduced price.  The Nook Color, of course, doesn't have the Logos or Vyrso app.  So, one must root it to get it to work.  What is really great is you can get a SD card with "dual-boot" option and have a fully functional Android Tablet (cost about $15).  This is what I did. Now, I think that there must be some differences in Android OS available on these SD Dual Boot card because my android system (along with Vyrso and Logos) worked flawlessly.... others report problems. I am thinking the problem is with the stability and functionality of our ANdroid OS, not with the Nook. But, I think the Nook Color (or recent tablet) is a great little tablet. I downloaded a nook app on my Android side of the OS and almost never went to the Nook side of things. Then I sold for a Kindle FIre.

Kindle Fire.  This has been a joy to use.  At first we needed to side load apps to get to use logos, but that quickly was addressed. Worked wonderfully.  I have not ever tried the Nook Tablet, but I give the Kindle Fire five stars.  But I kept hearing that the IOS system was better developed for Logos, I thought it was worth a try... besides, someone offered me money for my Fire.

Ipad (ie, the new ipad, or ipad 3).  Geesh!  What was Apple thinking!  Give it a name! :)

Great tablet. I have had it for all of 4 days. Have yet to figure out how to BACK UP one screen, but I haven't read the manual yet.  I already am seeing differences between iOS Logos and Android.  Some good things... and since I primarily use my tablet for Logos, that is a good thing. Is it worth a lot more than a Fire?  Probably not.  But then, I am just now learning the thing.  The main issue for me is the size... which will win out?  The 7" inch Nook/Fire size, or the 10" Apple iPad (release 2012).  :)

    No.

Yes. Calibre will convert items into other formats.

It does have a name. It's the iPad. Apple made a mistake with the second generation device which was rectified this go around. All the talking heads on TV who say otherwise are just babbling to have something to say. The iMac is the iMac. The iPad is the iPad. Why the "tech experts" are having a tizzy over this is beyond belief. After all, when you say that you just bought the "new mustang," everyone understands what you mean.

What do you mean? Are you talking about the Vyrso or Logos App? Something else?
