Nelson's "reproducible" Maps and Charts?

I just purchased Nelson's Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts - all of which are advertised as "reproducible." My question is, how are they reproducible? Can they be cut and pasted into presentations as is? They do not seem to come over very well that way. Is there mechanism whereby they can be inserted into handout notes or imported into PowerPoint? I seem to be missing something.

In Logos 4 Mac, if I right click on an image, the following box pops up. I can then copy the image & paste into Word. I can also print, or send the image to powerpoint or Keynote. "Save as" does not appear to work on the Mac version.

The charts are not graphics, but text-based tables. That's better is some ways, because you can edit them, but Powerpoint doesn't handle tables too well. You have various options:

Continue to do what you are doing.
You could try pasting into Word, then copying and pasting from Word into Powerpoint. Sometimes that works better.
You could take a screenshot, then paste that into Powerpoint.
You could export the chart to PDF (using CutePDF), the convert the PDF into a PNG file (using something like IrfanView), and then insert into Powerpoint.

Which you choose will depend on how much time you have, and how important it is to get it looking exactly right. The options are listed in order of complexity - the first one is easy, but you lose a lot of fidelity. The next one slightly harder, but should look slightly better, and so on.

I think "reproducible" in the advertising copy just means you have the legal right to reproduce them however you like.

See the "Note to the Reader" at the beginning of the book:

Note to the Reader: Nelson’s Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts—Revised and Updated Edition is intended for nonprofit, noncommercial use in classrooms and seminars. Photocopies made for such settings should be limited to 1,000 units and cannot be sold or used for any profitable enterprise. Questions about usage should be directed to Thomas Nelson.

Remember that this was originally a print-based publication, and "reproducible" in those days meant photocopying. The word "reproducible" is used prominently in the description of the print-based edition on Amazon.com. I think Logos probably just wrote their product description based on that without thinking much about what "reproducible" means in the digital world.

It is still legally true about the digital copy, that they can be reproduced and used for educational purposes, but as you've discovered, the quality of reproductions is not as great as it would have been for photocopies of the print edition, and the method for making the reproduction might vary depending on the type of visual content, or be complicated and not entirely supported easily within the Logos software. This is an area for improvement in Logos, I think.

Thanks Mark. Actually, I toyed with it last night and found that for the charts (which as you point out are text-based tables) the cleanest display without over-manipulation is to:

1. Take a screen shot which includes the chart I want.

2. Paste that shot into Paint or some other image editor.

3. Crop the shot to include only he chart.

4. Save that image and paste it into PowerPoint.

That way it has the nice finish look of the chart as it appears in the book. I think I like it.

Thanks for your suggestions as well. Now we have several tools in the box.

Thanks again Mark. Confession: I'm using OpenOffice. While the cropping doesn't work as elegantly as in PowerPoint, taking your suggestion I went back and figured how to do it in OpenOffice and YES! It saves time and effort. I am most grateful. Now it'll work like a charm.

Reid, rather than take a screenshot which will be a fairly low resolution grab of the entire screen, you can use the Snipping Tool (er, assuming you are using Windows Vista or Win7) to only grab the exact dimensions of the chart, save as a .JPG, then pull it into PowerPoint.

1. Bring up the chart in Logos. Its probably best if you float the book and maximize the window.

2. Click the start icon, and type "Snip" to access the Snipping Tool.

3. When the Snipping Tool opens, the screen dims so that you can clearly see what you are selecting. Simply position the cursor over one corner of the chart, hold down the left mouse button and drag diagonally to the opposite corner of the chart and release the mouse button.

4. Your chart is copied to the clipboard and from here you can copy/paste to another application like PowerPoint, save as a a .PNG, .JPG, .GIF, etc.

Its very clean, but you can also use built-in tools to "erase" a portion of the image, or the Highlighter tool to emphasize a portion of it. Give it a try, you may like it.
