I don't find this screen particularly helpful...
Perhaps the file name could be shown along with each clip or a frame from slightly further into the video used for the thumbnail?

That's a good thought. I know the designers have been working hard to balance clutter vs. necessary details. This is likely one of those grey areas. You might want to make a request on Uservoice.
This issue pertains mostly to user-uploaded videos (in the "My Content" section). While the default thumbnail from uploaded videos is just the first frame in the video, videos that can be read locally by Proclaim will allow you to choose a scene for the thumbnail. In the upload window use the scrubber that should appear just below the image from the video. It's a little subtle. :-) It is surrounded by faint grey square brackets.
