Help please with this file

I have converted the attached file from PDF to DOCX format. I am trying now to convert the footnotes in the document into real MS Word footnotes. But as you can see, in Print Layout view there are underlines in the footnotes. If you click to Draft layout they are not there. No matter what you delete, the underlines stay in the document!

Can anyone help, what are they and how can I get rid of them?

I hate to compile it to check it since it is still under copyright. Have you tried to compile it to see if the underlines affect compiling at all? My suspicion is that they won't appear in the compiled format which is the end goal anyway.

click in the footnote area,

right click on the underline

choose select text with similar formatting

then click remove formatting

you have mixed styles in the footnotes

You are probably correct about copyright. BTW .... I DO commend you for your ethics in this area.

However, in this case (I am not Roman Catholic!) the Vatican itself has it online with no copyright statements. Is that an oversight on their part?

You are probably right about it not being a problem. All I know is that at the top of the document you uploaded, it states: © Copyright - Libreria Editrice Vatican. That would seem to be a copyright statement to me.

The copyright holder has every right to put it online for anyone to read for free. That does not mean anyone else has the right to copy and distribute it without permission. It's still under copyright, until 70 years after both JPII and the translator are dead. Unless the copyright has been expressly waived, which I'm pretty sure is not the case here (though I found out the other day that it does seem to be the case with many of Dorothy Day's writings, in case anyone feels like making PB's out of those).

I looked again.... with Windows Explorer then with Google Chrome then with Safari ...........

However, I could not find the Copyright notice you quoted ...

I do not see any copyright notices anywhere but i did back track looking for one. I am curious how you got it off the net - did you copy the text then put it into a pdf?

Where did you get the pdf that you put into docx, that would usually have some form of copyright, especially if you did not create the pdf.../?

As a follow up to the original post, I sent an email to their tech support dept. Today I got a reply that is encouraging. Hopefully they can fix this, it's a good product otherwise:
