Shuts down constantly and also runs very slow since Windows 7

I am having a problem with Logos ever since I've updated to Windows 7. The program seems to be so slow. Not sure if it's related to windows 7 or not. Also, when I try to send a map to powerpoint, it shuts down, w/ microsoft searching for what went wrong. It does this not just when sending a map, but when I try and open several different things on Logos, or when, during my impatience with how slow Logos operates any more, it can't seem to handle my 3 or 4 clicks.

This happens even when I just have my bible open and maybe 1 or 2 other resources, so it's not like I have tons open. Can someone help me please? Thank you.

No offense to Hunter (who IS quite helpful and great new software), but I suspect Room4More's question is the right one. Presumably the OP was running either Vista or XP previously, even if on a low-spec PC. If so Windows7 would normally run Logos4 slightly better; not worse. The primary exception would be if an upgrade (instead of a clean install) was made to XP, in which case, unexpected problems could emerge.

Maybe Room4More will have good recommendations or others as well.

But I'd serious consider re-installing from scratch (Windows7). From what you describe, it sounds very 'system-ish'. Even Microsoft is squeamish about XP to Windows7 upgrades (vs re-installs). Starting 'from scratch' might be a sizable hassle, depending on how much you have to re-install. But it sounds like you really use your Logos4 heavily.

It really depends on how much longer you want to use your present PC before upgrading hardware (as Hunter hints at).

Okay. I just checked with my DH. He says we didn't upgrade, but reinstalled. And he built the computer, and it has lots of power, so....???

Well, I've re-read your description several times: unusually slow after you installed Windows7 and then installed Logos4 followed by unexpected crashes. The normal 'next step' is below. If you're not comfortable with these, you might get your DH's assistance (sounds pretty talented!).

Go to http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging and follow the instructions, trying to create a 'crashlog' of when the problem happens. Then upload the logs to the forums (there's instructions).

Plus if you can describe your PC a little more: memory, disk space, CPU, video card, latest version of Logos4?, etc.

Sorry. DH = "Dear Husband." I misspoke. Not "reinstalled" but installed, windows 7. It wasn't an upgrade from xp to windows 7, but my "Dear Husband" reformated the hardrive with a fresh install of Windows 7.

Disc Space - 160 gig

Video Card - 9600 GSO (nvidia gforce 9600)

My DH gave me these numbers, as he's the one who built the computer. I'm at my laptop, so I don't know what version of Logos 4 that I have, but I'm sure it's up to date, as I use it every day and it seems to always be updating. Let me know if the computer is okay. The DH says it should be fine for anything except hardcore game playing. And since I don't even Farmville, well....

Okay, check to see how much of the 160gig you have as free space left. If dh is there he will know how…but 160 should be enough…

Caveat: recommended system specifications can have a sluggish Logos 4 experience for many items: e.g. click once then wait.

Logos 4 is resource intensive on Mac & PC – benefits from fast processor, graphics, and disk along with adequate memory (i.e. newer hardware since Logos 4 being designed for use over 5 to 8 years).

If was shopping for a computer for primary Logos 4 use, would look at 2nd and 3rd Generation i5 & i7 CPU's (many times faster). For storage, Solid State Disk (SSD) has fastest response, but is a bit pricey. Seagate Momentus XT model has SSD hybrid with 750 GB disk that offers noticeably improvements with large storage.

Disc Space - 160 gig

Curious about disc rotational speed ? 7200 RPM is noticeably faster than 5400 RPM and 4200 RPM.

Reading rumors about MacBook Air model refresh soonish (few weeks ?), which should include price drop for older refurbished MacBook Air models. Also reading about a replacement for 15" MacBook Pro.

Caveat: with newer hardware, amount of click and wait in Logos 4 is reduced, but not eliminated (e.g. some things take awhile).

KS4J is a very helpful forum user and he will go to great length to help others here - unfortunately he is also very attached to the Mac computer products. Thus, nearly everytime hardware questions come up, he will post some information that shows that it may be possible to buy refurbished Mac computers (this to counter the supposed assumption that Mac hardware is outrageously expensive - it may only be a bit expensive if it is bought as refurbished). Then - sincehe is very much aware of the fact that Logos 4 for Mac seems to run a bit slower than the Windows version, has some minor functionality deficits and is just a tiny bit less stabile than the Windows version - he will often include information how you may run Logos 4 Windows on a Mac in a dual-boot or emulation situation.

All this may only be helpful for you if you decide to buy a new computer and deem it more stylish to have them sport a half-eaten fruit logo. Otherwise the idea of buying a new, fast harddisk or upgrade the processor/the videocard may be not bad (since your husband self-built the system, he should know how to replace components). Unfortunately, heavy users tend to compare the hardware requirements of Logos with those of video gaming software.

For casual use as you describe, your system may be sufficient. Maybe it's some simpler thing: When I experience unusual slowness of my Win 7 PC, I look into the system tray and may find that the antivirus software is updating itself or has started a scheduled run in the background, eating up all the harddrive performance. Or Logos is indexing (which should happen infrequently, but will slow down the machine).

After researching hardware specifications plus "runs very slow" comment, thought about various hardware upgrades since Logos 4 would be sluggish at best on current computer. Also wonder about anti-virus software interaction with Logos 4 ?

Suspect adding a Solid State Disk (SSD) for Logos 4 use would be noticeably faster; thread => Are you seeing real speed improvements with SSD? has SSD plus some hardware configuration ideas. If later decide to upgrade computer, SSD could be transferred.

For hard disk, a 7200 RPM drive is up to 33 % than a 5400 RPM drive, which can be noticed in Logos 4 usage. For data transfers to/from disk, speed degrades from the outer edge to the center. Wiki => Getting Started with Logos has a number of Tips and links. Personally learning having less open in Logos 4 is more responsive, along with knowing how to quickly open other items as desired.

Another hardware upgrade option is buying a newer computer. An ultrabook is a laptop computer that weighs between 2 and 3 pounds that can have adequate hardware for acceptable Logos 4 use. In contrast, lightweight netbooks can be used for Logos 4, albeit slow typically applies (similar to current computer).

Personally using Logos 4.5b SR-1 on Windows 7 and Logos 4.5b SR-1 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 with similar hardware so most items have similar responses on both computers. Caveat: indexing is noticeably faster on Windows 7.

Currently prices for Apple hardware models run the gamut from competitive to premium pricing, including outrageously expensive: e.g. can buy two 17" refurbished laptops from Dell for the same price as a refurbished 17" MacBook Pro.

In comparison, refurbished 13.3" MacBook Air with 1.8 GHz i7, 4 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD is $ 1,439 along with Apple's 13.3" screen having higher resolution of 1440 x 900 (compared to 1366 x 768 on the Lenovo model).

Samsung was also positively mentioned in article, looking on Amazon, found a Samsung Series 5 NP530U3B-A02US 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver) with 1.6 GHz i5, 4 GB RAM, and 128 GB SSD for $ 769 (reflects 30 % discount), which should have decent Logos 4 performance. Apple uses a number of Samsung components. Also $ 769 is less than the lowest priced refurbished MacBook model with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD at $ 999; anticipating refurbished price drop after Apple releases newer MacBook Air models later this year.

Personally living and learning plus concurring with NB.Mick about Apple pricing. Years ago, all Apple Mac models had premium pricing. With model refreshes later this year, am wondering about the pricing future of Apple and other computers. Intel wants Ultrabook sales to increase (has been helping to subsidize ultrabook pricing).
