Can I get full features without base package upgrade?

I started with the Leader's Library and it's great. That library combined with a few sale purchases means I have more resources than I know what to do with for the time being so I've no interest in upgrading the base package just now.

However I would like to have some of the other features like Pronunciation Tools, Visualizations etc. Is there a way to get the full feature set without also buying a whole lot more books?

Well, I weill take it that you are referring to L4 and since you are wanting just particulars, it would be best to call sales and see what they can offer..[do you have L4?]

I think Fraser has a good suggestion, even if it wasn't stated as such. There should be an option to buy the database features that are listed at the bottom of the comparison chart without having to shell out the big bucks for the scholar's library. Although I'm a Platinum holder now, I sometimes wonder if I hadn't been better off getting some of the Christmas packages instead of upgrading my base packages. The one solace I have is knowing I needed to get to at least Scholar's just to be able to use the program fully. But really, that's kind of a crappy system from a user-perspective. If someone doesn't like ANY of the books available in the Scholar's package, they are forced to pay big bucks simply to use the program, when their money could be better spent on resources they will use.

At any rate, best of luck to you Fraser - I hope CS can work something out. If not, I'd suggest upgrading to Scholar's if you use Logos for anything more than casual use - the features are worth it and you'll probably find some of the resources helpful. At least that's the case for me.

I had the Original Languages, added the crossgrade and see literally nothing in Scholars etc that I'd waste money on. I pick and choose exactly what I NEED, wait for a good SALE, etc.

I ended up spending a solid five-figures (a choice), but there's very little I bought that is in the higher packages; even Portfolio isn't that great. I got what fit my needs.

I have the Bible Study base package and I have added a couple of separate add-ins, Compare Parallel Bible Version Add-in and Bible Analysis Add-in. Basically, the first one adds the Show Differences and Show Base Text functionality to the exixting Text Comparison tool, and I think it also added a quick way to search by pericope headings in that tool. The second one adds the Passage Analysis tool. Other add-ins are available, and the ones that your base package duplicates have their Add to Cart buttons grayed-out to prevent you from needless purchases. 20 bucks a throw is worth it to some for some things, maybe not to others.

Many of the Forum users have higher-level base packages that have these features standard and aren't frequently aware of some of the nuances of add-ins and L4 in the lesser base packages. Also, the sales pages for the add-ins are a little misleading, because they leave the impression that they don't have an effect on L4. Also note I'm using Win 7; I'm not sure if it would be different on a Mac.

In addition to the MinimalCrossgrade recommendation, which I second: one can buy the pronunciation Add-On sepaerately for just a few bucks

The page may say it's for Libronix, but Logos 4 will automatically detect the licence and Greek pronunciation will work. (Note, this is lemma pronunciation, not fluent reading of the Greek NT, which is something different and in no base package)

Robert - your comment was most helpful and was pretty much what I was meaning about buying individual features. However as you say they are all labelled for Libronix 3.0 only which is off putting. I'll read the other thread you mentioned too.

It would be nice to have a straight forward product that was just a feature top up to give all the features.

That we can probably do! What are you planning on using Logos for, though? Are you a pastor wanting to use it for sermon prep? Do you teach a Bible study? Are you wanting to do devotional reading and/or personal/private study? Something else? Your primary use(s) of the program will help determine what resources are most valuable.

Fraser ... before you decide, note that the syntax search (if I read the chart right), begins at Original Languages and up. Some folks (many?) really NEED to KNOW that; you might be too. I have it but do most of my searches in another product that has more functionality.

Then there is no reason to buy the minimal cross grade… its already part of your base package.

You mentioned that you might get more education. FYI - Logos has an educational discount, that is available to be used while attending various schools & seminaries. I wish I had purchased Logos much earlier in my education. As it turns out, I bought it during the last half of my final semester. [:'(]

The main things you get by upgrading to Scholars is in the Preaching and Teaching section (mainly a bunch of sermon outlines), the Ancient/Original Texts sections, and the Exegetical Guide and Bible Word Study features of the program. If you're preaching once a month, you very well could find these things helpful. However, if you don't plan on spending any time in the original languages and primarily use commentaries for your study, then you're probably better off spending your money on some good commentaries and/or dictionaries at this point and upgrading later when you go to seminary. I tend to use a combination of both, which makes the Scholar's Library invaluable (or at least very valuable!)

Rev Chris - I'm starting a short course in NT Greek so in the long run I hope to do some work in the original languages but it's very early days :-) Thanks for pointing out the main differences for me. Sounds like it might have some value for me. Will give it all some thought now.

Another thing to remember is the more advanced features are pointless without the backup material to use them. That's why many of the language tools, for example, are not available unless you pick up Original Languages or higher. You may want to also wait till Logos 5 to see if they won't offer some spectacular deal to upgrade while moving to the new platform. If you are not desperate for the tools right at the moment, the wait might pay off.

As far as the Scholarship packages: gold or platinum are the best. I've found that many of the solid resource like BDAG are helpful. Picking them up individually might make sense but you'd miss out on some of the wider array of commentaries you get as well. I now own a wide range of commentaries that make different view points, levels of comprehension, and application possible.

Actually I bought one of the addins a couple of weeks back.

Now it's true, Logos, though accepting payment, had no clue how to actually deliver the product. And the refund lady at Logos was somewhat confused as to why a Logos4 user would want the addin.

Anyway, they've got so many balls in the air, at least they're all very nice people.
