BUG: Tags and ratings don't sync properly

As I mentioned in the other thread it looks to me there is a problem with a proper syncing of the books metadatas. After a fresh install of the iOS application (not just update of a new version) all metadata (ratings and tags) are synced to my iPad and iPhone properly. After that however it stays unchanged even though I add some ratings (or change) or add some new tags to any of the books.

Highlightings and notes sync properly though and after any changes they show up on my devices in a few minutes. Not so any changed/added ratings or tags.

I am running PC version of Logos 4 latest beta 4.5c Beta 3 (4.53.0.2109) and the latest version of the iOS 2.1.5. on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 (iOS 5.1.1)

On my iPhone there is about 2.7 GB free space and on the iPad there is even more, about 9 GB free space. I have a good Internet speed and have never had any problems with a bigger downloads.

I noticed the problem after the filtering feature for download of books had been added. I added tag named iPad and changed about 380 books with that tag. It did not showed up on my devices, only after uninstall and re-install of both Logos and Vyrso (the problem seams to be the same for both).

In another thread (http://community.logos.com/forums/t/50594.aspx),we noticed this behavior in a couple of ways.  I would agree that there is a meta data bug or failure to complete the handshake and thus validate that the sync is successful.  My solution was indeed to delete the iPhone app and then download it again.  The good news is that I have used tags now and can download all with that filter quite quickly.  It is a pain that I have to do a fresh install to address certain weird issues.  Not only did the meta data appear corrupted or missing, but the filter started to work incorrectly and only displayed 20 of the 40 resources it should have shown.  Once I re-installed, all 40 resources showed up.  I hope this helps you and others confirm the bug.

Thank you Robert for your comment. Yes, it syncs all metadata correctly after a fresh install, but just once. Any new tags and ratings would need to uninstall and re-install the Logos application again and again. It is clearly bug IMHO.

Absolutely agreed and the several other threads, I believe, support this 100%.  Is there a bug report email or submission place?

About how long after installing Logos on iOS does one have to wait for the Tags/Ratings to stop syncing? I had Logos on my phone for a while but hadn't signed in. I rated the ESV, signed in and the rating was there. Then about two minutes later I added a tag and it too showed up without issue. I just want to make sure I'm trying to reproduce this in the same manner you were.

@Robert: Bohuslav said he was on a beta build of Logos 4. Are you on the beta channel for the Logos 4 desktop application as well?

I think waiting 2 minutes and doing nothing with no clear indication of progress and not allowing for this to occur in the background is not the best approach (if I understand you correctly).  This is not just a simple change one rating, but it could involve change changing my tags (many times), and Ratings.  I changes about 40 to 60 resources before syncing and would probably do so again depending upon my mobile needs.  The only fix I found was to delete the app and all date and then download all of my resources afresh.

I am not but would be happy to help beta test.  I just installed the latest production release (similar to the one that others have and are having similar issues in).  Usually, beta don't come that fast and I suspect his beta build is close to the just recently release 2.1.5 version.  If not, then you guys are hopping along at a much faster pace than I previously thought... which is cool.  [:)]

I only asked Robert if he was on the beta build because you indicated in you were running the beta version of Logos 4. This could impact the behavior of  syncing between Logos 4 and the mobile application. I should have been more clear and asked if the desktop application he was using was on the beta channel. I will edit my last post.

If changing a tag or rating on the desktop application and then syncing and seeing if it shows up on the phone is not what you are doing can you provide me detailed reproducible steps to accomplish the behavior you are experiencing?

    Hello Tommy,

I don't know if that is the same what Robert experienced but I tried to describe the problem already. After the fresh re-install of the application I signed immediately. Then it started to download the library data. I left it working till it stopped downloading. It took some minutes. After that all metadata had been synced. Then I did some more changes on the desktop and the syncing did not work since. It looks like it does only the initial download of all library data. It does syncing of the notes and highlighting but not ratings and tags - and possibly the shortened name. I did not try this one.

I am going to try the process on my iPhone again and let you know the result.

OK. I uninstalled Logos on my iPhone (I don't have too many books downloaded there) and re-installed again. I signed in and waited for all library info to download. All metadata were current. Then I changed metadata for 2 books and it synced to iPhone almost immediately. I changed another 2 books ratings and even the short name and it worked again. (I found the short name worked by filtering it in the iPhone Logos library). It looks like all is fine. I did not try to change a bigger volume of books however.

However in Vyrso (I did not re-installed it) the same books stay not-synced.

It is late here. I will try some more tomorrow.

I tried to change a number of books, in one case about 16 of them at once and all is fine. Works almost instantaneously. So far it looks to me that complete re-install of 2.1.5. version solves the problem (it was not the case with 2.1.4.). I will re-install my iPad later on if it really works since now.

I just changed my meta data on my L4 running on my Mac Book Pro and it did NOT update it.  I closed Logos on my iPhone and then reopened it.  Still no updates.  Bummer, really.  Is there an issue with the Mac version and meta data?

I just posted but wanted to reply specifically to you... changing the tags on my computer and opening up the iPhone does not update it.  I first updated them on my Windows 7 Professional work laptop and then updated them on my home Mac Book Pro computer.  Are the L4 version on the Windows and PC updating the meta data differently?

Are you saying that you MANUALLY updated them on both your pc & MAC? Are you running the same version on both?

@Robert Iversen: Are either/both of your desktop applications on the beat build?

I first updated them on my Windows 7 Professional work laptop and then updated them on my home Mac Book Pro computer.

I, like 'bama, am interested in what exactly you're doing here. Are you updating the tag and or rating in Logos 4 on one compute,r and then manually doing the same thing on another? It should be syncing that information across platforms automatically (unless you are not using the internet one either of them), and you shouldn't have to manually do that.. I'm not a developer so I can't answer your question regarding whether or not the metadata is being updated differently or not.  My guess would be no though.

Have you tried re-installing the application as Bohuslav did?

Okay, I thought was pretty clear, but let's try this again.  In Logos 4, on either my Windows 7 Professional laptop and the again on my Mac Book Pro Laptop, I update the priority of the resources, changed the tags, and have updated the short titles.  These are suppose to carry into the iPhone app once updated.  If I delete my iPhone app and then reinstall it and then re-download my resources, they show up as I set them up on Logos 4 on my Windows 7 Professional Laptop or my Mac Book Pro laptop (Logos 4).  If I start to update the resources in Logos 4 on either of these laptops (I switch between these 2 depending upon if I am at work or at home and do NOT want to take out my work laptop), then the updates do not come into my iPhone subsequently after the fresh install and download of resources.  I have done this test twice now, where everything was in sync, I updated them on my Windows laptop first and the updated them on my Mac laptop later in the day.  These updates would not come down to my iPhone app.

If this does not explain what I am doing, then I must NOT understand what you are asking or what information you are seeking and I would ask you to be very specific in what you need to know.  Short of putting together a document like I would for Oracle Support, I cannot break it down more.

On a side note, I have no idea what a Bohuslav program install is.  I do not mess with the code of any Apple app, though I know a lot of people who do once they jailbreak their iPhones.  If you meant to ask if I have reinstalled my iPhone app, then, "YES!"  I have done that 3 times now (see above) and it works after the first re-installation.  It goes out of sync for the meta data once I start to update the data on my laptops.

Also, I do not see any of the updates to the meta data (only for resources that have not yet been touched) unless I close the app from the multi-task pain at the bottom from double clicking the home button.  I would like to see it update my iPhone if I just open the app.  I think this tells me it is having problems knowing if it is connected.  Can it get confused from the switching from 4G to WiFi and then back again?  Is the connection when it is syncing like my Oracle EBS applications that must have a constant and uninterrupted connection or the procedure doing the syncing and handshaking not completing?  Does it have a rollback feature if it is interrupted for the code?

Okay, I reread that last sentence... I think you were asking I did a re-install of the iPhone app like another poster here?  I was not aware of the name and it sounded like a piece of code or procedure to me.  Sorry.  If you read my post, I did this 3 times total after the first hosing of the meta data.  So, yes.  Sorry for my confusion.  [:S]

I think I understand you more clearly now. The problem is your usage of the word "update." When Tommy and I read that you "updated" your PC and then you "updated" your mac, it sounds to us like you typed the info in on each computer because it didn't sync. It would have been more clear to say that you "updated" your PC and "synced" it with your Mac.

On a side note, I have no idea what a Bohuslav program install is.

Bohuslav is the name of the other forum user in this thread. [;)]

At this stage, closing the app via the multi-task bar is the only way to ensure a sync. The app syncs when started. When you close the app, it goes into hibernation so simply reopening it does not have the desired effect. Yes this is a pain, but is what you need to do. I hope this is addressed at some point.

    Hi Robert

Okay, I thought was pretty clear, but let's try this again

    I think this is clear.

What I believe you are seeing is that if you set ratings, change tags, change titles on L4 (Windows or Mac) and then reinstall your iPhone app the metadata is correctly synced. However, subsequent changes to the metadata on L4 are not synced to your iPhone.

FYI - I have just checked this on my iPad and changes I made in L4 earlier this morning to the tags associated with a resource have successfully synced with my iPad app. So, unless there is a difference between the iPad and iPhone functionality, there is something specific to your installation here.

On a side note, I have no idea what a Bohuslav program install is

Bohuslav is one of the forum members who commented in an earlier post on this thread. The question was simply asking about whether you had reinstalled the app the same way he had.

I think this tells me it is having problems knowing if it is connected.

This sounds very likely but we need someone from Logos to comment on this one.

    Graham

Edit: Sorry, Alabama and I were clearly posting at the same time. At least we said similar things[:)]

I think I got it solved. It works now on both iPhone and iPad. I think the problem was solved in 2.1.5. version, but by simple updating of iOS Logos from 2.1.4. to 2.1.5. retained the problem of syncing of the books metadata. (Before, when I tried to uninstall the iOS Logos 2.1.4. application and install it again - the 2.1.4. version, the bug was still there. It did exactly the same as written in my first post).

So my conclusion is, the new version fixed the bug, but everybody who have had the problem in 2.1.4. or after the simple update to the newer version, have to uninstall iOS Logos and  Vyrso completely, restart the iPhone/iPad and then install Logos and Vyrso again. Than wait a couple of minutes to download all the library data. And then it should work properly. At least it works that way for me.

I changed now a bulk of 56 books metadata a few times and the syncing to iPhone and iPad was almost instantaneous.

    I hope it helps.

P.S. to Robert - I had no idea how you could read in my post about jail-breaking of iOS... Okay, I was curious about the Wifi and 4G syncing, so on a hunch I disabled my WiFi today and lo and behold... instantaneous syncing of the resources... once I close and reopen them.  No issues.  It appears that the WiFi syncing is not quite as smooth and may be the culprit for the issue.  I will be sure to use my 3G/4G for syncing the app when I make changes.

And, yes, I can confirm that it is pretty instantaneous, too. Nice.

I have the WiFi-only iPad so all my syncing (which seems to work well) is done over that.

Can I just check - does it work properly if you disable 3G/4G and try to use Wifi?

Actually, yes.  It does work properly if I only use WiFi and not 3G/4G.  I wonder if this is a conflict of some sort in iOS5 or on the iPhone.  Interesting indeed.
