Is there a way to search for a preposition [like epi] with a specific case [like dative]?
It appears that you can do that only for bibles with Swanson, Friberg or GRAMCORD morphology and therefore not possible for the majority of bibles with Logos morph (see this for yourself by typing @ in Morph search and selecting Preposition).
Thanks, Dave.
I tried this search and it worked pretty well [I'm not sure I got ALL of the occurrences or not but probably got most].
(lemma:ἐπί WITHIN 1 word @R??D) OR (lemma:ἐπί WITHIN 1 word @ND)
Bill
Using NA27—
"lemma:ἐπί BEFORE 3 WORDS @ND"
I used 3 words to account for such items as articles intervening—260 results in 119 verses.
Thanks, George.
I used (lemma:ἐπί WITHIN 3 words @R??D) OR (lemma:ἐπί WITHIN 3 words @ND) to include PRONOUNS also in this listing. It got [from BYZ] 474 results in 206 verses.
Instead of 'WITHIN', you need to use 'BEFORE'. Your search string returns verses like Mt 6:10 that has a dative 2 words before the preposition.
This is the kind of search a syntax search is designed to handle. However, I have my doubts about the accuracy of most of the syntax searches I've seen. It always seems you can include/exclude some legitimate hits without realizing it.

Thanks, Gary. I noticed that even choosing BEFORE brings in some extraneous results [like Matt 3:7] - but yours is a better method.. I've tried a few Syntax Searches in the past but have gotten rusty at it. Do you know how this one might be set up?
Sorry, Gary. I now see you gave an example. Thanks.
The one I posted above gets close -- however, even with it, you really should add another 'OR' section and set it up to find dative participles functioning as obj of prep.
Gary,
How do you get CASE DATIVE and PART OF SPEECH NOUN? I can't seem to find that option when I click on Word1.
Gary, How do you get CASE DATIVE and PART OF SPEECH NOUN? I can't seem to find that option when I click on Word1.
When you click 'Word1', the right hand column gives you options to set -- one of these is morphology. Type an '@' and you get the same popup menu options as you do with a morph search.
Thanks, Gary, for the tutorial. I was able to include the participial object as well.

By the way, how do you insert the screen shots to the forum reply?
Use the paperclip icon on the toolbar -- it will popup a dialog for you to browse to your screenshot.
But where do I find the SCREENSHOT? I don't have to put it in a WORD document, do I?
I'm sorry - misunderstood what you were asking. I use the free program Irfanview -- http://www.irfanview.com/
When it is running, you can set a hotkey that will popup a crosshairs so that you can define the region of the screen you want to capture. When you set the top/left and bottom/right points, it captures into the program and you can save this screenshot to disk.
Now that the wiki is back up, check out the instructions here - http://wiki.logos.com/Screenshot
Thanks, Gary. I downloaded the program. Now how do I set up such a hotkey?
Now how do I set up such a hotkey?
Go to 'Options' -- 'Capture/Screenshot'
When you click this, a dialog will come up letting you capture the current screenshot. In the top right section of this dialog you can set a hotkiey that will call up this program to save a screenshot whenever you press it. Remember the hotkey; click start to capture a screenshot. You will notice the crosshairs to define the region. Press escape; setup the screen you want to capture - then press the hotkey; define the region and it will open in IrfanView.
Thanks, Gary.
I have attached my search from last night [that you helped me with].
I got a little different results -- did you include an 'OR' section to look for pronouns?
Yes, I included pronouns but made a slight mistake in not including instance 3 under prepositions. HOWEVER, I have attached a new search which seems to be the same as yours - but with different results. [Maybe I have not seen something. I don't know.]
There's only a slight difference between our searches as far as I can tell. Notice the dotted line going from 'Phrase1' to 'Word1'? Now notice that there is a solid line going from 'Phrase2' to 'Word2' and from 'Phrase3' to Word3'. This shows that 'Matching skips levels' is checked for Word1 but not for Word2 or Word3. Having this checked helps you deal with structures which aren't exactly the same. When you click 'Word2' and 'Word3', look in the top right column and you will see this option.
I don't have the Cascadia Syntax Graphs but do have the Lexham Syntactic Greek New Testament. Can this search be done in that? It seems that the "Terminal Node" is not available to me.
The Logos 4 help doesn't really help either...
Also, I can get the Morph search to work as follows: (lemma:μετά BEFORE 3 WORDS @NG) OR (lemma:μετά BEFORE 3 WORDS @RG)
but I had to type the @NG and @RG manually. If I use the Logos 4 interface pop up prompts I get @N??G and I cannot get @RG at all. This is all very confusing...
Andy
Thanks, Gary. That was helpful [although I'm not exactly sure what "match skip levels" or even "highlight search" means]. I did, of course, get the same results that you got.
Maybe you could answer AndyTheGreek's question below. I'm not that familiar with the Lexham Syntactic Greek New Testament.

I haven't used the Lexham databases very much, but I basically reproduced what I had done with the Cascadia. I used the 'Word' object in place of the 'Terminal Node' object. The results are close though there is a little difference. Looking at some of these, I don't understand how some of the ones it missed are tagged. For instance in the Lexham databases, it misses Lk 18:7 because it is labeled as an indirect object. Anyway, here's how I set it up.

Could you post a screenshot?
I'm not exactly sure what "match skip levels" or even "highlight search" means
I'll answer the easy one and let you do some searching for the harder one [:)] 'Highlight Search' just means that the search term will be highlighted in the list of verses returned -- notice in the result list above how some of the words are in red and others in green.
As for 'Match Skips Levels' -- try this thread http://community.logos.com/forums/t/16563.aspx
Thanks, Gary. This is helpful. I appreciate your help on this entire thread.
You're welcome -- just trying to pay back some of the help I've received on the forums. [8-|]
Screenshot attached. I get far fewer results using the 'prompted' method to enter the search parameters...
I think I ubnderstand now: (lemma:παρά BEFORE 3 WORDS @ND) OR (lemma:παρά BEFORE 3 WORDS @R??D) uses the Logos Morphology.. I was using the Gramcord, which uses a different set of arguments...
I was using the Gramcord, which uses a different set of arguments...
I never use the Gramcord databases -- there have been a number of problems reported with them. See - http://community.logos.com/forums/t/10123.aspx
Thanks for the tip. I will use the Logos ones from now on - also has the advantage of LXX searches being able to use the same syntax.
Is the syntax for doing Morph searches listed anywhere? I couldn't find it in the help file...
Thanks
