Deleting a PB

I'm not sure if this goes here (since I'm not uploading a file) or in L4-Windows forum, but I figured that those who know the most about personal books frequent this forum more than the L4-Windows (or Mac) forum.

How do you delete a PB from your system? I downloaded the docx of a couple of resources from an off-Logos site and then after creating the PBs I realized that I already had them in an Logos collection. I would like to delete them, but can't figure out how.

I DO know the work-around of finding another docx, edit the old pb with the name and author of the new resource and replace the old docx with the new one (done that actually a time or two), but surely there is an easier way to do this rather than that work-around.

Am I missing something easy?

I'd like to know myself.

Sometimes I can delete it by right-clicking over the title in the Personal Books panel.But sometimes that doesn't work and the book gets ophaned in the library.

Dragging the resource over to the 'Hidden Resources' has so far failed to 'kill it'. And so one of my PBs (Three Hermits) lives on. He's sits with a 'Delete' tag waiting to someday leave my PC.

Thanks. At least the right click--> delete worked on these two resources. They are not in my list anymore. I don't know if they are off of my system, but this is at least a good start.

BillS ... thank you for the input. I tried that again, but I suspect between having been in Hidden etc. the 3 Hermits are with me to stay. I wonder what will happen when Logos eventually uploads PBs. Probably one of the hermits will get caught!

I've deleted PBB's in the past. If I remember correctly I had manually go to the resources folder and delete the specific PBB file which L4 created during the build. To find the correct file, you must first open the resource in L4, then click on the "resource information" icon in the top right corner of the opened file (it's a small case 'i' with a circle around it). At the very bottom of this page, there is a section entitled "Support Info". The last of the 3 lines contains the file name of the resource you want to delete - it will be a series of letters and numbers and will end with the extension .lbspbb (L4 PBB). Write or copy this file name down as you will need it to identify the file you need to delete from the Resource folder. Next, repeat this step for any other PBB's you wish to delete, then close your L4. The next step is to locate and manually delete the selected file names. You will need to find the main L4 program folder labeled "Logos4" . It is usually found in C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\ .... (keep in mind that \AppData\ is a hidden folder, so to see it you will need to make sure that you turn on the "show hidden files, folders and drives" option on your computer - you can find this by opening windows explorer, OR any folder, and selecting "organize" then "folder and search options" then clicking on the "view" tab.) The full resource path is usually

C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\data\random\resourcemanager\resources

NOTE: there are 2 folders specific to your system (i.e. yourname ..... & ..... random).

Next locate & delete the desired files in the \resources folder (those you copied down previously ending in the .lbspbb extension. CAUTION: THIS FOLDER CONTAINS ALL OF YOUR RESOURCES, DELETE ONLY THOSE FILES YOU ARE SURE YOU HAVE CORRECTLY IDENTIFIED.

Now, delete OR move the .docx files associated to the deleted resources (this step is probably not necessary, but it might be good to do anyway) - i.e. those your L4 read from to create the PBB.

Restart your L4. If I remeber correctly your L4 will still show the resource in the Library at this point, but you will not be able to open it - it will say "missing file" or something like that. Next, in the command bar type in:

scan C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\data\random\resourcemanager\resources

(If you right click on any file inside of the resource folder and select "properties" you can then just copy the location path and paste it in the command bar instead of having to type it out). Click the arrow in the right of the command bar. This tells L4 to re-read all of your resources from your resource folder at the next start up.

Restart L4 and let it finish reading your resources. Then synchronize your data with the L4 servers (top right). Restart your L4 again. (Make sure you follow every step on all of your machines running L4)

This SHOULD permanently delete not only the PBB, but it's Library info, AND the license file for that PBB from your system and the L4 servers.

Also, when I did this, it did not show immediately on my L4, but took a day or two to be completely clean.

Wow, looks like the 3 hermits are goners.

I'd never dreamed this was the procedure Logos designed for deleting PBs.

But it makes a lot of sense, PBs being far more valuable than regular resources.

I don't know if Logos has a designed procedure to delete a PBB - they may have intended for the PBB's to be permanent (I don't know), but this method works

That has worked for me, unless the deleted ones are hiding under some digital rock that I have not yet turned over.

I knew about the "right click delete," but for some reason when I deleted PBB's in the past (it was some time ago), the delete was never "clean" so to speak. - I don't remember if the PBB remained registered in the Library, or if the PBB came up in search inquiries, but some trace remained and so did the actual file in the /resources folder, so I had to manually do it. At that time I figured that Logos did not want (or plan to have) the PBB to be deleted completely once built, so that is what I meant when I said I don't know if they have a procedure to delete (i.e. fully delete) a PBB.

I guess this must have just been a past bug issue which Logos has now fixed, asI tried a "test PBB" in L4, and this time the "right click" took care of it completely . . . wish I would have been aware of this before writing the long excursus [^o)] - - thanks for pointing it out though - - much easier this way [Y]

As I understand it, once a book is indexed it remains in the index, even after deletion (I don't think it ought to show up in searches, though). Even your method won't take care of that, unless I missed some step when I skimmed through it earlier. The only way to erase every last trace is to rebuild the Personal Book Index, but that would normally seem like unnecessary trouble.

No ... the bug is still there. Doubt it's a significant bug and it'd certainly would be difficult to find under what situation the PB file can get detached from the PB tool after 'Delete' but still remain in the library (and not respond to 'Hidden').

I've had all 3 situations: a normal 'Delete', a delete but a library drag>Hidden working, and the present 'Delete' and a drag>Hidden not working. So I guess that leaves the 4th technique of literally deleting the file in Windows.

I was about to use the 4th method for my 'Hermit's file only to find the Hermits not in my library. Then I switched to 'Three' in the title and they came back. So I suspect the issue is in how the PB is identified since the Library filter doesn't work right.

I never reported it since I couldn't see under what conditions it occurred. I'd bet their PB library sub-system (delete in the PB panel) is independent of the library system (no cross-check on maintaining titles, etc).

I haven't thought it's worth their time (like you I have other bugs but I don't worry too much given their uniqueness).

You're right!

I'm used to 'the best Bible software ever written' (and my own, which isn't remotely as good, but also uses the same filter as Libronix).

Well, I guess I better as well manually delete the Hermit file.
