Is there a way to change the background image without changing the formatting as well?
Currently, by design, styles are set for each background. Picking a new background uses that background's default style. The best option is to not style the text until you have selected your background. I encourage you to upvote such an option at http://proclaim.uservoice.com/, as this will increase its visibility.
