Question: Is there any way to put a logo on one of the templates provided in the software, or is it better just to make my own powerpoint slides and then import those?

We don't currently have a way to add an image logo to our templates (though you can customize, for example, the church name text in the "Customize" section).
If you wanted to create your own background with a logo on it, I would actually recommend that you create a large high resolution image in an image editing program, import it, and use that as a background. That is much more flexible than importing Powerpoint slides.
Is it possible to change the default background for scriptures for every new presentation?
That is a good idea, though we have no way of changing that setting at this time in Proclaim.
