Bewildered seminarian paying on Silver 4.0
Hi,
I can barely afford the payments on my Logos 4.x version and now wonder a couple things:
- Does this new version have a better engine and opening page?
- I have seen some of the flashy sales videos but wonder, is my regular payment going up to accommodate something special (as in new, faster, more user friendly)?
- Why wasn't anyone given some warning about all this?
- Does anyone really think this new version is that much of an enhancement. I mean for crying out loud, what's different about the opening page chock full of sales ads and tiny one inch windows and blogs that are often useless?
God bless the hard working men and women of Logos but I wonder what am I now paying for and is my payment going up ever so slightly to accommodate something better?

- It's built on the Logos 4 engine with various improvements and new features. The opening page is largely the same, from what I can tell, other than the top bar being moved to the side (the bar showing reading plans, lexicons, reading lists, etc).
- That's a subjective question. Check the new features with Logos 5, check the new resources that come with whatever package you are considering, and decide if it's worth it for you.
- It is fairly common for software updates to come unannounced. What difference would a warning make? If you need time to save for the upgrade, you can start saving now.
- Again, this is subjective. Check the features, check the resources, decide if it's worth it for you.
For a breakdown of new features, check out http://www.logos.com/features from there you can also compare the various packages. If none of the packages look good but you want the new L5 features, wait until they release the crossgrade.

Joshua, I frankly am a bit surprised that anything on the Home Page would concern someone who can get an academic discount. Surely you didn't but Logos for that?
As for the rest:
Engine has been tweaked and it seems to run faster. The video display has been enhanced for a bit better speed of rendering as well.

Can't explain the 'warning' part. Logos will have to explain that, but see the thread above with Bob's explanation of a number of things.

For a seminarian the new features should largely be a strong selling point. Again, you will soon be able to get most if not all of those features in a minimum crossgrade.

Your payment shouldn't be affected by the new version. Do you have some reason to think that it would? Currently you won't get the new version unless you specifically order a one of the new base packages. Later on there will be a free program install available and a low priced crossgrade package.
Also, do you know you can turn off the home page so you don't have to see it in Logos 4? (In the bottom left corner of the home page is a customize link. Click
that link, and un-check “Show home page at startup”. From now on Logos

Thanks everyone. I think my wallet is thankful too now though it like me is still unsure. I would like the new engine and some of the features (That Bibliography feature is sweet) but wonder how much my existing monthly payment is going to go up.

If you wait for the crossgrade, you won't have to pay all that much, relatively speaking. Less than $100. Logos hasn't revealed yet what the crossgrade options will be or how much it costs, but as others have noted, Bob (head honcho at Logos) does provide some details at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/58259.aspx

L5 is going to be around for awhile. The discounts for upgrades will not be, but likely the minimum crossgrade will be available throughout the life of L5 (though the price could vary (L4's did not)). You have a lot of power under the hood in L4, so it isn't worth stressing over not having L5 right away IMO.

Per one of the earlier posts, the second phase will be a minimal cross grade (Bob said likely in the neighborhood of $100) and the third phase a free L5 engine only. So you're not at any loss with L4 right now. But I agree with Mark...and wish I had the wisdom while in seminary to LOAD UP as much as I could on resources with the academic discount. I understand that money is tight...but as you near graduation, I'd take a good look at your wish list and do what you can.
On a related note, Logos offers some of the deepest discounts when they roll out new base packages. The cost per book won't get cheaper (other than in the Community Bidding books, of course).
Pay down Logos 4 first and be patient. You've already got AMAZING TOOLS in L4.

Per Bob's post (http://community.logos.com/forums/t/58259.aspx), the bibliography feature will be included in the free update to the engine itself. So you don't need to buy anything to get that. But (biased as i am by having helped envision and develop them [:)]) i think most seminarians will find a lot of value in the new datasets, so i wouldn't rule that out once you're able to afford an upgrade.
