Looking for new laptop to run L5 and need help

Since my laptop is Win XP, I need new hardware to run L5. Not immediately but I am looking for opinions and options. The new Dell XPS 12 convertible has caught my eye and it comes as follows: (or with the i7processor)

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i5-3317U processor (3M Cache, up to 2.6 GHz)
Windows 8, 64-bit, English
12.5" FHD 1080p Touch
8GB¹ Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
256GB Solid State Drive
Intel HD 4000

I know the recommendation for the graphics card is one that is "dedicated" however, there doesn't seem to be any option other than the Intel HD 4000. I know the solid state hard drive will be great. I am wondering about how well L5 would work in the laptop or tablet mode. I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

The specs look good. You'd have to want a small screen, though, which I wouldn't. Would be very portable, though.

Wonder why there would be a touch screen and not Windows 8? (Not that I have any experience with Win8 to recommend it. It is just touch screen enabled.)

You are well beyond the minimum threshold for running L5, IMO. I would love to know if the SSD makes L5 fly as advertised. I keep saying I'm putting one in my next laptop, then promptly don't buy a new laptop. So I'm still waiting to see.

If'n it were me, I'd spend some extra money on a bigger screen (i.e. a 17" laptop). Logos is at its best when you can crowd the screen with all sorts of peripheral resources, notes files, etc. A 14" screen means you'd better have some good eyes.

A bit off-topic, but my ideal screen for an L5 installation would be a 60" wall-mounted big-screen just over my desk. [:D] (Ain't gonna happen!)

Thanks, Mark. I know the screen size is small. It is hard for me to gauge just how L5 would look on it. OK, the graphics question is taken care of. I don't know anything about the option of the touch screen "and not windows 8". I love using my iPad and so my thinking was that the option of using a tablet or a laptop would be really keen. I know to stay away from surface tablets.

But, I have wondered all along if it is too early to jump in with a brand new convertible and Windows 8 which is also new. I tend not to be an early adopter of the latest technology but I am in a bit of a predicament.

Thanks for chiming in. Right now I have an Inspiron 1520 with a 15" screen. And the XPS 12 is a 12.5 inch screen. I wish I knew someone who had one and better yet, someone who is using L4 or L5 on it. I still am torn between having the option in my lap of either a tablet or a laptop or just a laptop with a slightly larger screen.

I'm using a laptop with a 11.9" monitor 1366*768 pixels. It's too few pixels. The size in inches is not the problem. I will never want a tablet. I have internal SSD and external HDD, but my other specs are far from what You are considering.

Last June I purchased a laptop to run Logos. I LOVE my Dell XPS 15z (http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/xps-15z/pd?~ck=anav)

They no longer offer this model, but it is available refurbished. I got mine with a hybrid SSD/7200RPM HDD and the 2nd Gen i7 with discrete graphics. I was able to get a reburbished unit with a 3 year warranty for less than a brand new with a 12-month warranty. Pairing this with a 2nd monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse on my desk is GREAT and the 15.4" monitor is good when I am away from my desk.

I found myself in a similar situation...I had an xp netbook. I found myself migrating in the same direction you're leaning toward. I settled on a lenovo x220 tablet/convertible. It's a proven platform, with a swivel screen. Logos works well on the touch screen. Mine has windows 7. I tried W8 and promptly removed it...WAY TOO BUGGY. Please understand, You do not have to have W8 for a tablet to function...and function well. (I can't say it loudly enough...I prefer W7 head and shoulders over W8 !) The small screen is an issue, It's a trade-off for portability. I strongly suggest your new toy have the ability to run an external monitor. Issue resolved.[:)] I think you are wise to get something that employs a laptop processor, ram, and hard drive. I hope this helps a bit.

My setup would be definitely just for laptop use. I could go with an i7 instead of the i5 with the XPS 12, though.

Yes, Windows 8 is brand new and that is one reason I would like to wait until they get the kinks out or roll out the next os. It sounds like you Logos power users love the extra monitor. I have been fully satisfied with my 15" laptop screen size so migrating to a screen that is 2 inches or so smaller to me doesn't seem a deal breaker. But Windows 8 being buggy would be a deal breaker. Thanks.

I think the system you are looking at would have plenty of computing power and generate a positive logos experience.

Have you seen [View:http://community.logos.com/forums/t/34884.aspx:550:0] with pictures of many logos users desks to reveal how important screen real estate is? I realize various users will all utilize Logos differently in their workflow.

Those are great but so not me. I am content with my 15" screen open with a few windows. A power user, I am not. Thank you for the views. At this point, I am waiting for the bugs to be worked out of Windows 8 given my husband does not want me to go backwards in technology to Windows 7.
