Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary?
Logos is offering me a discount on the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary as a student. Is this something I should consider purchasing? For those who've used it, give me your thoughts on it.
Thanks!

Nathan a ton has been said here about that resource. I'll summarize: it is the best Bible Dictionary available in Logos. No pastor or seminarian who can afford it should be without it. It is never asked about without a resounding chorus of positive recommendations.
It was 50% off on Back Friday.

That's excellent to know. I may spring for it soon then. They're giving me a pretty deep discount on it, so it's probably well worth it.

AYBD is an excellent resource for non-pastors and non-seminarians also. It offers so much more than a single volume dictionary and is considered a standard reference resource. If you want an extensive definition on a word or topic, this is amongst the best.
My thoughts as a non-pastor non-seminarian. [:)]

It was (and still is) $70 off on the Black Friday page (=$199.95).
It was (and still is) $115 off for anyone upgrading to L5 (=$154.95).
However, neither of these equals 50%.

Mark didn't say 50% off on Black Friday. 'Back Friday'. It's a special day on the east coast for those whose 3rd finger on the right hand has independent motoring capabilities.
I do enjoy your eagle eyes, fgh. When I see an fgh input, I know it'll be worth reading (unlike that crazy dmb).

How does the AYBD complement the IVP Dictionaries and what are the main differences?

My 2 cents ---
AYBD is by an eclectic group of top scholars from just about all places on any theological spectrum you can imagine (with the possible exception of KJV only [:)]) with articles about just about everything related to the Bible and its cultural background. The articles are generally written by people who are on top of all the "latest" (as in 1990's when published) scholarship. The Logos editions are quite generously tagged. The Anchor was actually my first Logos purchase and I still use it extensively.
The IVP Black dictionaries are also quite good. The contributers are top scholars from generally "Conservative Evangelical" to "Traditional Main-line". Each volume focuses on a particular subset of books (or era) and so the articles are considerably more focused. While by no means being of one voice, the voices in the IVP set are generally more "traditional" with regard to the teaching of the church than the Anchor. Unfortunately the NT set at least could use a re-tagging treatment like the Anchor got a year or so back.
Which to recommend? Personally I want something that doesn't share my blind spots and so use the Anchor a bit more, but I would probably recommend the IVP for a church library. Both sets have considerable merit.

Perhaps not 50% of regular price but it is more than 50% of the list price $570 (sorry if that is wrong Logos automatically gives me Canadian dollar prices and just guessing the $566.15 is something like that). Logos has often done this. like offering a huge discount in the march madness and then excluding bundled sets. I wanted the treasury of David but you had to buy the volumes individually to get the discount and the discount was only off the list price and so TOD would have cost actually i think it was 40% more than their regular price so i just decided against it. Logos has some very adding pricing schemes at time is all i can say.

I fail to see the upgrade price for the AYBD and have not seen it since the first week of the L5 release. Do you have a link?
You are correct about the price for the Back (Black?) Friday listing.

IVP is on my list to get as well. I have the OT Dictionaries and use them extensively. AYBD does sound like a solid purchase as well.

The only way to see it these days is to have an upgrade in the cart and then add the AYBD.
If you've already upgraded, I'm told you can work around it by adding the same upgrade again (now for $0).

I heard this from another forum thread last week and have tried this several times but the AYCD does not show up as an option. As suggested I contacted Logos sales and asked for the $154.95 but have not heard back from them yet. I should say that I only emailed and didn't call because I thought it would be easier to communicate the history of this to give it context. I may just have to call instead.

I use AYBD, ISBE and the IVP Dictionaries. They all have their good points, I think they compliment each other. If you can I would get the AYBD, and then work on adding the others. Its good to have more than just one Bible Dictionary/Encyclopedia set anyway.

Now I am wondering if I am doing. I have already upgraded to Logos 5 but missed the customize button the first time. I can go back to it by upgrading again for $0 and I have a choice of a number of books but I can't see the AYBD listed. Am I doing it wrong? Where are others finding that this shows up?

It sounds like you're misunderstanding the instructions. It won't "show up as an option" on the 'Customize' page. You need to first add an upgrade to the cart, and then add the AYBD from e g the Black Friday sale page. When you add it, it will say 199.95, but once it's in the cart with the upgrade it should say 154.95, like in my post above.

I think that I am doing it right. I did it like you said but the only price that it gives is the 199.95 (with the black friday codeand if I remove the black friday code it is full price). By the way I did go to customize and is shows $0 for the upgrade. Is there a different code for the upgrade?

Ah....that's it! I think you are right that the Black Friday code was trumping this code but when I used the new code it worked. Thanks so much Mark!

Thank you! *smile* And, you are very welcome indeed! I say this, but the others will surely appreciate your comments also!
And now, I guess, since perhaps we make a positive difference that we must work even harder!

For a one volume i absolutely love the Eerdmans Dictionary.
Which one, Dan? Eerdman's Dictionary of the Bible or Eerdman's Bible Dictionary?

Only really familiar with the http://www.logos.com/product/7841/eerdmans-dictionary-of-the-bible
I always go there first and then pop over to one of the larger ones.

That one is the better of the two.
My first paper BD was The New Bible Dictionary.
I guess I still favor that in the single volume smaller dictionary field.

I think that there is a special discount code for Black Friday that is trumping the upgrade code.
It's not that simple. I've added it from the Black Friday page twice without problems. Both codes show up, but the "TOPPROD" one wins. But I already have other "top products" in my cart since earlier. Maybe that makes a difference? Maybe it's the first code that wins, and not the one that gives the highest discount, like it should be? Unfortunately I have too much in my cart to want to empty it and try out different scenarios.

I've never tried using two codes at the same time. Can that be done? I tried adding the AYBD several different ways and the only one that worked for me was TRPPROD.

Certainly. There used to be a limit of three, but I'm not sure that still applies. And you can't add a -15% code and a -10% code and expect to get -25%; one will 'win' and the other will be ignored. But if they're for different books, no problem.
In this case, however, you shouldn't have to 'add' any codes at all. They should show up automatically.

That is good to know. In the past I have just submitted multiple orders.
