Still no luck with Logos for Mac

OK,  continue to wait. The log says it is still downloading, but after two solid days I don't seem to be making any progress. There appears to be some problems with the Libronex files. Any suggestions? Getting very frustrated. Spent close to $700 and after more than a week, I am no closer to accessing this program than I was when I didn't have it at all.

You asked:  "Any suggestions?".  Yes, don't use an Alpha product if you expect it to work regularly and with full function.  You said you spent $700. . .surely you know that most of the features aren't even avail in the Mac version yet?  Logos for Mac is months away from the type of stability necessary to use it as you primary tool.  That will not change soon so don't use the Mac version.  Install Fusion or Parallels or use Bootcamp and run the Windows version.  You will be much happier.

Looking at your logs, the download is timing out for some reason. I'm still learning the mechanics of how L4 works, but one thing to check is your internet connection.  Are you doing this via wireless?  If so, try plugging in with a wired connection. Also, reboot your router just for the fun of it. This probably won't help, but it is always worth mixing things up a bit when it is a connectivity issue.

No, I did not know that most of the features were not available in the Mac version. That was not mentioned on the site when I purchased it. If I had known that I was going to have to purchase yet another piece of software to use Logos, I would have waited.

I will try a direct connect because I am doing this wireless at the moment. The error message that seems to appear most frequently is the following one:

Libronix.DigitalLibrary.Synchronization.SyncClientException: Unhandled exception during synchronization. ---> System.Net.WebException: The request timed out
      at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.EndGetResponse (IAsyncResult asyncResult) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

      at Libronix.DigitalLibrary.Synchronization.SyncClient.GetItems (DateTime since, IEnumerable`1 ignoreSyncDates) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

Any ideas what that might be about?

As mentioned above, I suspect your network connection. If you can't get the download to work, call Customer Service and we can mail you a disk to install from. The errors you are seeing mean the app can't connect to our servers to sync your data. While an offline mode will be supported in the final version, we haven't spent a lot of time testing it in the current releases.

Please send your comments on this to CS so that they can improve the site. I have sent a few of my own comments, particularly on emphasizing the nature of Alpha software. (i.e. it has bugs, unfinished features and will be prone to crashing)

The good news is Ken, that the Alpha version has already made huge progress in the last month even. It is not hard in two months the Mac version being very useful.  Credit to Logos, they have moved more programmers on the team to bring it up to speed. In the meantime, I am using the Windows version under Fusion.  You can also use free of charge, the old 1.2.2 version. It's not what you want to hear in regard to having a full blown L4 version, but it is going in the right direction very quickly.

My working theory is something to do with your router and maybe NAT. Sometimes NAT doesn't play nicely with certain protocols, particularly if there is a bug in the BIOS of your router.  I have seen something similar to this with peer to peer applications like Skype. I could be way, way, off on this though and is only a suggestion.

According to the logs, the connection issue is first coming when the app connects to find out what resources it should download. There are a couple of related issues in the log, though, that I want to investigate on our end as well. What Tom suggests will probably go a long way to help. Customer Support can arrange for a disk of resources to be sent to you so that you can install without waiting for the download. In the console messages, there are other errors from other apps that indicate potential connectivity issues.

Hi, Ken, I am a Mac user and, before I bought the product, I read on the site that the Mac version was not finished and we should not expect to have it working properly yet. That is why you can also download, without any extra cost, the windows version of Logos4. This is what I have done and it is working really well (actually, surprisingly well) under windows vista within Parallels Desktop installed on my MacBook. Marcos

Marcos is correct but it will require spending additional $ to get it running on Windows/Mac.  Minimum config includes a Windows license for bootcamp ($100) and if he wants to run it under vmware/parallels another $80 or so. . .

Libronix.DigitalLibrary.Synchronization.SyncClientException: Unhandled exception during synchronization. ---> System.Net.WebException: The request timed out

Generally, timeouts like that occur when the connection is experiencing incredibly high latency or packet loss (jargon, I know). Basically, it's typically indicative of either a) poor connection quality or b) the server is taking a really long time to respond. I'm inclined to lean toward the former because, while there are other sync issues that we're working, I haven't seen many, if any, sync service timeouts. Also, the sync service isn't directly related to resource downloading, so the thing that resource downloading and the sync service have in common are that they both rely on your connection.

If you decide to try a physical connection and still have issues, it might be useful to try quitting the app and removing the entire contents of <your home directory>/Library/Application Support/Logos4 and relaunching the app. This will clear out any cruft that may be left behind from prior failed attempts to download your resources.

I double-checked on this end that your account is able to login, retrieve licenses and properly queue resources for download. As mentioned before, though, if you contact customer support they should be able to get you a disk with all of the resources on it so that you don't have to deal with downloading.

Ken. . .pls keep in mind that once this timeout issue is fixed you will still encounter a whole host of other issues as this is Alpha software.  You will be still not be happy if you are expecting parity with the L4/Win or even full functionality.  You will still get crashes, things not working, missing features, etc. . .

and if he wants to run it under vmware/parallels another $80 or so. . .

Actually, Sun Microsystems offers a free alternative called VirtualBox

I've been using VirtualBox for my VM for about a year now while another guy in the office has given up on Fusion.  Great program for the price, just have to be willing to read a bit to figure it out.  I'm creating a bigger VM today so I can install L4 on it and enjoy the full glory.  The Mac version has me salivating, and it's still in Alpha, so I can't wait to see the full deal.

I have installed Parallels but am not having any luck getting the software installed from the disk. It says I need Windows XP pack 3 upgrade. I have downloaded and installed it three times, but every time I try to install the Logos software, it says I need the upgrade. Any thoughts?

Ken, before you install Logos you need to update your winXP to Service Pack 3.

    Ken,

It was great to meet you this week. (Just found out over Christmas vacation at my parents in TX that Ken is my little brother's future father-in-law). Let me know how the VirtualBox install goes. I'll be back in the office the Monday after Christmas, so hopefully we can sort out the Mac issues.

What an incredibly small world. Who would have guessed that the guy who was attempting to solve my Logos install problems was the brother of the young man who is going to marry my daughter. What a shock! But a pleasant one. Well, I finally did get VirtualBox installed and it is running. I had to increase the virtual disk size three different times before it would do it, but I now have it all up and running. Right now, it appears to be running a little slow, but all the resources are there. Now I am just trying to figure out how to use it. I probably will not attempt the Mac side install until you guys get further along with the Alpha version. But at least now I can start trying to take advantage of all the bells and whistles Logos has to offer.

Hope to see you some more over the holiday. But either way, we will be in touch.

I finally figured out VirtualBox, but it took a while. You have to make sure you set up your virtual disk with enough space at the onset or when Logos tries to install, you will get a message that there is not enough room to install the contents. You cannot fix this without setting up a whole new virtual disk. You cannot increase the size of an existing one. I had to install four different times before I had a virtual disk large enough. I ended up allocating 16 gigs. Then you have to make sure you go back in and get rid of any other virtual disks you set up or they will continue to take up disk space.

The program is up and running and is fully functioning, but it runs kind of slow. I am still trying to figure out Logos, so part of it is user ignorance.
