Bug: Paste a large selection from clipboard into a Note, L4 doesn't scroll to show insertion point

Open a Notes file.
Copy a large amount of text from somewhere (enough to more than fill up the size of the window where you have your Notes open) to the clipboard.
Paste it into a Note.
Result: the Notes pane doesn't scroll to show the insertion point at the end of the pasted text. It should.

Quite true ... however, I frequently have Logos 4 crash at this point which makes it moot. When I don't have a crash, however, I agree with Rosie.

Has anyone been able to consistently reproduce and document this crashing bug? I've seen it too. But it hasn't reproduced again since I turned logging on. I've looked through the wiki bug list and it doesn't look like it's been reported yet (not by us anyway).

No, I haven't been able to determine the precise circumstances - it is more likely when the unit pasted ends in a URL or a bible reference ... but that is not the full story

Yes, both times when it happened for me I was messing around with pasting URLs, lots of them.

I can confirm the bug on my computer also.

Thanks, Thomas. Just to clarify -- there is still a crashing bug lurking around in here which has not been reliably reproduced and has not yet been reported on the wiki.

Hi MJ. Smith if you have not already done so please enable logging by closing L4, downloading and running http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LDLS4Installer/EnableLogging.js , and then reproducing this crash. Then find the logs in your My Documents\Logos Log Files folder and attach them to this thread in a zip file (both Logos4.log and Logos4Indexer.log). Thanks.

Okay, I kept hoping I'd find the precise cause and save me this step. [:)]

Okay, okay but you won't believe how slow the reporting of the crash to Microsoft is ... but yes, I recreated the failure quite easily - a simple large paste ending in several URL's. Logs attached.5047.LogosNotePasteCrash.zip

Yay, I'm glad you were able to get a reproducible case!

This isn't exactly on topic, but it's not too far off either. At the Camp Logos seminar I became aware that the notes pop-up in L4 is tiny...about an inch and a half square. Bob himself told me that this was by design...apparently because some people complained about notes pop ups becoming so big that they covered the screen. That one floored me. I use extensive notes in my L3 pop ups (some running up to 15-20 pages or more) for presentation purposes, and so this is just another of multiple reasons why I will probably (with tremendous disappointment) never make L4 my main bible tool. The complaint itself baffles me too. It amost seems like a joke. To make the pop up go away...simply move the cursor, often no more than a fraction of a centimeter! I just early on got into the habit of placing the cursor in the edge margin...a reflex response that I now perform without a second thought.
Anyway, I am a bit intrigued that you are making large notes files, and I wonder what your use for them is? Do you have expectations of the pop up other than just to use as a "reminder window" of the content in the note? Or are you just using the note input area as your reading panel. Do you feel the smaller pop up is too limiting? Or at just 1.5 to 2" small, maybe pointless altogether?
Besides this, there is the issue of the lack of the Strong's pop up I am so happy with in my L3 NASB. Like a myriad of features in L3 that I rely on constantly, it's gone in L4, with the new and improved method seeming to me to be only new. It's either waiting 2-3 seconds for an often truncated segment of the entry to materialize in the Info window, which doesn't seem to have a link to bring it usefully to bear, or it's one or two clicks away to get what used to be delivered instantly and likewise disappeared instantly as soon as I was finished.
Anyway...about the notes pop ups, could you please reply to my queries? Thanks.

David, I think you're more likely to get a reply if you start a new thread for this. Even though it's semi-related to the topic of the thread, the subject is a bug report, and the bug has already been logged on the wiki. So this thread might not get as much attention as a new one would. Just a thought.

More info on this pasting thing. Actually, the probably appears to be that the insertion point stays at the beginning of the pasted text, not moving to the end of it as it should (as in all other Windows edit controls of any sort). After you've pasted something and you want to continue typing from there, you'll expect the insertion point to be at the end of the pasted text, not the beginning.

Most of my work relates to lectionary-based Bible study. I have both short and long notes. Long notes are my way of importing lectionary-based Bible commentaries from the web. I use original (or small copy & pastes) notes to attach my potential notes and questions attach to a reference. To create lessons, I always have the long notes files opend; for short questions popups are satisfactoy.
That is not to say that this is how I will handle it when Logos 4 is complete. in L3 I used sermons much as I use long notes. Long notes are definitely an improvement.

There doesn't seem to be any crash information here, sometimes the log file doesn't get written to right away. Let's enable deeper logging, it should help, please download Logos4Indexer.NLog.config file and copy and paste it into the My Documents\Logos Log Files directory, you can find the file from Bradley's post here: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/740/6990.aspx#6990
Please also make a second copy and rename it to just Logos4.NLog.config, then try to reproduce once more. I cannot reproduce this issue.

The link doesn't work but I assume it is the script you want me to run. It takes several minutes for the error report to Microsoft to be generated and sent - I erroneously believed that when Logos 4 disappeared from the tray, it was safe to zip the files.

It's just that kind of day. I have the script but my computer is set to edit .js rather than run it ... and its before noon so I don't claim to be coherent. Let me try once more with the easy version.
Starting condition:
take the URL (note the link parsing error) and copy beginning at the first text heading "prayer of the day" and go to the end of the page. I went to the end of the final URL not to the empty line beyond:
Paste into the note at the bottom on the second line below the URL. The result is consistently (my apologies for the clutter)
a nice crash that takes several minutes to report (by clock time 4 minutes today). Note I am running XP on a custom-built but older machine set up for web development.
For some reason this morning I only got one log file:
http">4666.RecentLogosLog.zip" target="_blank">http
If you still can't recreate the problem, I'll muck around and run the scripts - I should be coherent soon. I'm nearly done with my first latte.

Take this file and name it Logos4Indexer.NLog.config then make a copy of it and name it Logos4.NLog.config, and paste both files into your my documents\logos log files folder. Then try to repro once more and the logs should show more detail. Thanks!

Yup, they implemented the forum in a way that creates the error. And in the Christian spirit of sharing and the Christmas spirit of giving, I'm willing to share the pain and give them the opportunity to remove it. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
If you don't like that rationale, my other less Christian options:
1) spread the blame ... the cat was sitting in front of the screen impairing my field of vision
2) the cascading effect ... I forgot to clean my glasses this morning so my sight ...
3) the time effect ... the request to redo the files came in too early ... my noonish caffeine fix had yet to kick in ... oops that's my prescription drugs excuse ... er, a, not exactly prescription but ...

I am getting crashes when pasting maps into Notes using right click, copy and paste in Windows XP using VMware 3. Should work like a charm, but doesn't. Logos 3 had hyperlinks which were great, but copying and pasting should be rather fundamental to something on the level of Logos 4.

Yes, it remains a problem - and it took from 2:11 to 2:16 producing the error report for Microsoft. That means that every time I hit this problem, I am out 5 minutes plus the time to bring Logos 4 back up. Which browser were you using to copy/paste?
Edit: I was finally able to repro. I did the copy/paste but then I placed the cursor at the end of the line that contained the very last link and hit [enter], this caused an InvalidOperationException. This is being investigated for a fix.

I use Firefox ... your recreation of the error is compatible with my results although it isn't the whole story on my machine - I avoided your positioning because I found it appeared to minimize the occurence. But including the following new line-space did not always stop the problem. Thanks for tracking this down.

Okay, so we put out a fix for the crash following the new-line I'm wondering now if this will fix your crash or if that was a separate issue. Can you reproduce the issue in 4.0b?
Edit: Forgot to mention that 4.0b Beta2 has the fix.

I have found the same issue with L4, however I figured a way around it. After I highlight and cut an article, I go into add notes and type a few blank spaces. Then I paste the clipped articles after the blank spaces and they appear. You can go in and delete the blank spaces after this if you want. I hope that helps.

If you have Java installed on your computer, you should be able to simply click on the link to the Java script and it will run automatically. Lots of things require Java, so you probably have downloaded it already at some point or other. If not, it's at http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

It depends on the browser some give you the option of saving it / running (IE) and others (Chrome) might show you the source. The best way is to right-click on the link and then save target-as and after you download it just double click it.
