Logos 5.1 Read Aloud Improvement

I just tested out the new read aloud feature on 5.1 with the Lexham English Bible. Wow, I was really impressed with the quality compared to what it was like before.
Now we just need to see this applied to all our books. I wonder what kind of work is required to convert them. Can we expect this in the near future or will it be a long way out before other books are available. If this was a feature I would use it a lot when driving when you can't use your eyes to read.

I have 5.1 but am still getting the computer voice.
I looked for a place on the "Read Aloud" section but the only choice was "System Narrator"

Just to clarify you are trying it for the Lexham English Bible and you are using 5.1? That is the only resource that works.

Yes to both of your questions.

Was this released with 5.1? This is the resource: (AUDLEB)

I got it during beta testing for android implementation of it. Not sure if it has generally been released yet.

Here is what the email said that I received today -
Read aloud
Logos 5 now reads aloud in a smooth, professional voice. We have plans to enable many resources with the read-along feature, but we’re starting with our own modern Bible translation, the Lexham English Bible.

No it is this resource - LEB. It is also not a Beta version as far as I'm aware.

For clarification: this isn't really an improvement of an old feature, but the addition of a new one... Or a different implementation at least. This is an audiobook, rather than a computerized rendering.Bruce Dunning said:I just tested out the new read aloud feature on 5.1 with the Lexham English Bible. Good clarification. At first I was under the understanding that it was new technology but you are saying that it is someone actually reading it like a normal audio book.

Someone with a great voice, a microphone, and a lot of time. :-)
This is our first fully-synced audio book (/Bible); we'll be doing more in the future, but we're limited to what's available in audio format, rights issues, cost, etc. More will be coming, though.

That's exciting Bob. Thanks so much. At first I actually thought it was some new amazing technology that was too good to be true. [:P] I am looking forward to seeing what will be available in the future.

Yes it works on android, just had to update the app from google store.
I like the fact you can select the audio books for download i.e. Matthew, Mark, Luke etc.
Now I can have the audio bible anywhere I go!
Thank you Logos

One of the Logos databases suggests that John Piper's Don't waste your life might receive this enhancement in the future. The NA27 already has it, of course, although that uses older technology.

Do we update to 5.1 automatically? My "Read Aloud" is still a very mechanical sounding voice.

Did you ever get it to work. I am having the same issue?

If you have not messed with any settings, 5.1 should download automatically. If you have changed the internet settings or update channel, you may have to change those or download the engine manually. Again, if you haven't changed any settings, it should download automatically.

It is my understanding that this license was given to those who had the Faithlife study bible. Do you own this resource?

If you have 5.1, and the appropriate license, you should be able to change the read aloud to "Marv Allen." Again, I think that the license was given to Faithlife users.

That depends on your program settings. You can type update now in the command bar to manually update.
Kent said:My "Read Aloud" is still a very mechanical sounding voice.
You will need to update to 5.1, then after you run 5.1 you should receive a further resource update with the audio Bible. This presumes you have the licence. You can see whether you have the licence by going to the page below, and seeing if the "pre-order" button is greyed out, or not. If it is not greyed out, you would have to place a pre-order or purchase one of the collections that the resource is included in (see the panel on the right):

I have another reminder… The LEB Audio Book is currently NT only. You will NOT gain the new voice in OT passages.

Same here. The only voice choice is "system narrator" for me too.

I am in the New Testament - Ephesians - and it doesn't work. I have Logos 5.1. I also have Faithlife Study Bible.
Could it be that it has to index before this imporved "Read Aloud" works? I note that it just started indexing.

Do you have the Faithlife Study Bible? What about the iOS Faithlife app? It seems to me that the license came somehow via Faithlife. You might have to delete the app and reinstall (that was the trigger to gain the NIV for free).

Weirdly for me my up to date beta installation has a choice of narrator but my Gold 5.1 installation (which incidentally will also not sync reading plans, see http://community.logos.com/forums/t/72134.aspx) has no choice.
This leads me to think that the two issues could be linked.

But I think Mark has explained the problem. The new resource just needs to download. I think it is doing so now.

Could someone tell me ,what the purpose of read Aloud is? Is it in case someone may not be able to read,so that he can do it by listening to the text? Or is it for the sake of correct pronunciation?
Blessings in Christ.

I see several purposes where it could be very useful. Here are the ones that initially come to mind.
- There is the obvious where someone is blind.
- There are those who really don't read very well and thus avoid reading (my father was in this category as he only went to grade 10 but my mother faithfully read the Scriptures to him every day)
- Those who travel in vehicles are not able to read - especially those who commute to work over longer distances. Having a good-quality read-aloud option is a real treat and will result in people using it more.

Tes - There are really two different features here, but both with the same purpose. This is NOT about pronunciation. It is about listening to the text (For whatever reason). One implementation (the new one) utilizes an audiobook (human) reading of the text. The other one (older) uses a computer generated voice to read. Obviously the audiobook would be much better for pronunciation purposes... But that isn't the reason for the feature.

Thank you Bruce and Alabama. I have played on the LEB. It is very clear , but two things:. It was a bit faster. Even when I have changed the sound. I could see no alternative to making slower. 2. I could not rewind it , when I wanted to hear some of the texts again. I think it would be nice if there could be a possibility to run it automatically as longs as it is needed. Furthermore , it would like it , if there could be possibility to let it continue to read Aloud to next chapters instead of stopping after reading one page.
Blessings in Christ.

Hi Tes,
In the toolbar you should see options for changing the speed (1x) and for rewinding in small increments (serpent biting its tail icon). Marv Allen definitely sounds best at (1x) though; human voices don't sound good at other than normal speeds.
Note: there is an alternative interface without the text by simply opening "Lexham English Bible Audio" (AUDLEB). It includes a TOC and controls.
I don't believe either of the recordings should stop automatically. They should continue until you stop them. I have, however, noticed some flaky behavior sometimes when starting the audio for the first play. Subsequent plays work well.

Any chance Logos may just develop a generic Windows voice applicable to any text and give it away to customers? The built in ones are so awful, although there are 3rd party voices available for purchase at high prices. [:(] If I understand correctly Mac already has decent voices built in.

Zero.
- It isn't their expertise.
- It would cost millions of dollars to do a good job.
- Not all resources are "read aloud" enabled due to publisher restrictions (look for Zondervan titles, for example).

I'm having the same issue. Not working for me. I'm not seeing the option you have in the screen shot. Here is the version info for my desktop:

Father Devin,
Have you looked at Natural Reader. Seems to be reasonably priced. A few of the seminary professors for the Archdiocese of San Antonio have mentioned using it for the Catechism and it seems to work well. .Exports to .mp3 to play on your iPod, etc.

I have the LEB and Faithlife Study Bible working currently on my Mac which is running version 5.1.0.0943.
I tried the following:
update now
update resources
hid LEB
reloaded LEB
update now
update resources
(note: the log showed that AUDLEB needed to be updated, but it was never installed.)Downloaded AUDLEB resource and did a scan on it. It never installed.
I never get the new voices nor the choice to choose a narrater.
