Greek fonts on Mac

Hi all,

How can I access the Greek fonts that come with Logos in Mac Pages or Mac Word?  I've scanned my fonts, but I don't see any that have the same names as those in Logos, nor do I see any that appear to have the greek letters in them (Pages offers a preview of the font when you select one from the drop-down box).

Also, I found a post about adding word lists for Greek vocabulary within Logos, but it applied to Logos 4.  Where do I move the downloaded word list for "Learning to Read New Testament Greek" in Logos 5?

TIA,

Brian

Warm regards,

Brian

Are you trying to figure out how to type in (Ancient) Greek on a Mac?  I can help you with that.  Not sure that's what you're looking for though.

System Preferences -> Language & Text -> Input Sources -> check "Polytonic Greek" & make sure that "Keyboard & Character Viewer" at the top is checked as well.  You may possibly need to restart your computer.

Now, when you want to type Ancient Greek, see the flag on the top-most bar?  It's now your nationality?  If you click on it, you'll see Greek Polytonic under it.  Choose that.  And choose "Show Character Viewer" and "Show Keyboard Viewer" and that should get you started.

Before you know it, it will be second nature and you will rarely need the above "viewers."

Okay, so the next thing is, you need some nice fonts, right?

As far as fonts, many of the standard fonts on your mac - such as Georgia - do pretty well.

However, you really do want Ancient Greek specific fonts.  My favorite fonts are found at the Greek Font Society.  Oddly enough, their website is down.  Who knows why.  http://greekfontsociety.org  They also have a facebook page so maybe you could contact them through that?

But they have excellent fonts.  I particularly like Porson, which is based upon the superlative handwriting of an Oxford Greek scholar named Porson.  The Greek Font Society has the definitive version but you can find it elsewhere too.  This is the font used in the Greek Loeb collection.

Otherwise, there are some very good fonts here too: http://www.russellcottrell.com/greek/fonts.asp  There are other good resources too.

Should you need more help or directions or information, or anything Ancient Greek related, please do not hesitate to ask.

It seems to vary between computers, but for many of us Cmd-spacebar works to switch keyboards, and is much faster.
