Goodbye, Logos
Just got my Obamacare bill in the mail yesterday. Starting in December, my healthcare premiums go up $500 per month in order to cover just three people. That's an extra $6,000 per year in case you are mathematically challenged. Of course, we could always opt for the "free" government health care ... but then the taxes would take the hit.
So ... goodbye PrePubs. Goodbye, CP bids. Goodbye, Logos ... my library is now frozen.
Three thoughts before I leave ...
1) O My people! Their oppressors are children (Is 3:12)
2) How long, O Lord? (Hab 1:2)
3) Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Revelation 22:20)

As a Canadian and fellow Christian, what is the Christian opposition to this piece of legislation? Is there any? As someone who has no stake in this personally, please feel free not to answer. I am just asking for my information.

I'd be glad to chat with anyone about this off the board; my wife is running a Congressional Campaign at the moment (5th district, a Nanophysicist from Harvard), and one of their themes is the local effects this Bill is having on medical technology innovation. So I'm seeing this Bill from many different angles.

There is significant opposition (from Christians and non-Christians alike.) This issue is very divisive n the United States which is why we ought to avoid discussing it in the Logos forums. (forum guidelines, you know)
There are several Logos resources that address social justice and socialism, if you are interested in Biblical arguments pro and con.

I will have to search them out again . I have an interest in these but my wish lists are so long I did not add them to it. I do know there is one collection in CP or Pre-Pub and about three more coections already published. Logos forums is the only place where I find the breadth and depth of Christians necessary to engage in such discussions without being tied to one viewpoint.

Just a friendly reminder. No need to say "Goodbye", the usefulness of Logos and the blessings we receive from the software is not determined by the size of our library. Even the smallest base package gives us capabilities former generations could not even dream of. Sometimes we forget how blessed we truly are.
As for the precipitating issue God covered this very well thousands of years ago: "Thou shall not steal." and "Thou shall have not other God." God's Law give amazing clarity if we would only allow it to renew our minds. (Rom. 12:2)

One MAJOR problem with the new rules is that in the US if you are of party A and you are known to talk to a member of party B you lose your job.
Party A and party B are NOT allowed to work together to find a good fix to anything. Jesus is coming and He better get here soon.

Sorry. No sarcasm/mockery/wringing of the hands/acrimony/scorn/disparagement/etc. intended ... just realistic resolve. I will, of course, continue to use Logos but any future purchases are basically gone. Since the disposable income/savings of America has now been earmarked by others, I genuinely fear for the future of Logos.
As they say, it is what it is ... or to be more precise, it is what has been foreordained. [:)]

Yeah -- I think we are suffering an unintended consequence of some Watergate reforms. Since everything has to be done in an open meeting, it makes it hard for people to have any cover for making a deal so things can get done.

As has been said, the forums are not the place for political discussions. From a practical standpoint, however, an extra expense of $500 a month for ANY reason would certainly hamper "discretionary spending."

I am unfortunately in the same boat. 500$ a month will mean pretty big problems if this is indeed what comes to pass.

Fasting is a neglected and very beneficial Christian discipline. (If you want some good advice or practice, go visit your local Eastern Orthodox Church and ask for their yearly Calendar with feast-day/fast-day instructions.) With a few basic food choice changes and some regular meal reductions, one should be able to cut back significantly on one's food bill, enhance one's physical and spiritual health, and have the funds to keep buying Logos resources. When I budget my finances, I prioritize my expenses. I think you could cut some $ from Logos and from something else, and still ending up with keeping $30, $60, or $100 budget for Logos.
Yesterday, I noticed that I spend to much on Logos and limited my budget $60 per month. Will see how it works, if I do financially well, I will increase it...
