What part of the application window is gray? The entire window? Just the slide?
The whole thing is gray from the moment it opens
I have not seen this before. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? What OS version are you running?
Also, do you see the Signing In window at startup? If so then try holding down the CTRL key and restarting. This will prevent the automatic sign in and you can check the "Show setup wizard" option which will prevent the last open presentation from opening which could be related.
It does the "verification" window when I click on the program, but no "sign-in"
