Logos /Verbum and feeling very upset, please advise

I finally Got to put Verbum on and iPad-WiFi only, was pretty pleased.
Friday I had to take a trip out of town.

None of the features/guides work when off-line!!!!!

Where was this information in the advertising?1?!

This is crazy, all I have is a book reader.

Very upset and disappointed.

Thankfully I had Accordance as well, and, while not having the resources I wanted, At least I could work and just use Logos as a reader.

Can someone, anyone direct me to a fix, a download for my tools etc?

If Not, Logos and I will have to speak about a lot of refunds for all my Logos libraries .

I cannot believe this- to upsetting for words.

Sorry for the rant, really looking for help and hoping I am wrong, made some mistake and not, the mistake being investing in Logos.

Please, Please- do not tell me the iPad is not powerful enough to run a passage guide , I have software on my iPad that is hugely more complex than any Logos Passage guide and, Accordance can search for anything-in a blink, return hundreds of results almost instantly on an iPad .

I need my catholic resources to be useful on an iPad, not locked away from me, please, someone tell me I have missed something, not downloaded something, missed a setting- something.

The guides do not work offline, nor have they ever done so. They are run from the Logos servers. Im unsure about the Verbum advertising, but I have never seen anything that suggests that they can.

Personally I think the OP does raise a valid concern. Those who have used the apps from the start understand how they work. When you look at the advertising on the Verbum page it says you can pick up where you left off from the desktop app and for more information gives you a link to the standard iPhone app web page, not a Verbum app specific page. On this page it tell you the app runs passage guides etc. There is no mention of needing to be connected to the Logos servers for the passage guide etc to run on the app. It is not until you go to the support page for the apps, click on the FAQ's and start reading them do Logos bother to tell users you need to be connected to the internet for things like passage guide to work. Logos marketing does leaving me a bit concerned at times because they are not upfront and specific about this sort of information. You have to dig deeper to find it out. I really think this limitation of the apps needs to be explicitly stated in the front advertising material and not buried in the support material that the average new customer is not going to go and read until after they have made a purchase. Even when you watch the video about the app the show you all the slick features but fail to tell you they do not work offline. I clearly understand the OP's frustration and disappointment.

I do hope though the OP can find a way to make the situation for him and stick with Logos, adverstising aside they offer a great product and there is a great team of people behind the development of the mobile apps, desktop apps and resources and of course a great sales support team.

I don't think you are going to be satisfied with any mobile version of Logos. None is going to do enough off line to meet your real study needs. The iPad is a great ereader, and that is valuable. But its computing ability is limited. This is largely why I bought a Surface Pro 2 - to run real Logos on a mobile device. And it is the best decision I ever made!

It has replaced both my iPad and my laptop, and is the only computer I now use. The surface pro 2 is the best tablet experience I have ever had by far.

I took me a few days to get used to how Surface Pro does things, but it is so well designed that it quickly became second nature. My biggest concern was that Logos was not written for a touchscreen. That has been no problem at all for me. I far prefer to run Logos 5 on my Surface Pro 2 than a desktop or laptop.

And the Personal Books on a tablet are great.<\p>

The only disadvantage of running full Logos on a Surface Pro 2 rather than the Logos app on my iPad is battery life. The IPad will not run full Logos nearly twice as long as the Surface Pro 2 will run full Logos - (about 10 hours on the iPad vs. about 5.5 on the Surface Pro). But this is not much disadvantage for me. I run the Surface Pro plugged in at my desk in my office, using a large monitor. So I find the 5 plus hours on the battery more than adequate at home or on the road.

I'm not too much displeased by Logos mobile inconvenients, you know, because the Passage Guide can be launched at home, or wherever you find an WiFi and then you can keep it on.

Later I decided to sort all my commentaries and I prepared a list of commentaries by Bible Book (a textfile on iPad notepad) and a list of Hot Resources I want to check all the time I study some passage (like Boice, Word Pictures, Word Studies, Lightfoot, Holman, NAC, Wiersbe and Rosscup).

NOTE ----- If logos can provide a sorted, tagged, list of my books, instead of letting me work it through logos for PC/MAC or by myself --- VERY APPRECIATED

So far I'm fine with using my personal list of resources, and some tags I put on with the PC/MAC app (like mydict which lists all dictionaries I love to check, like TDNT, NIDOTTE, NIDNTT, VINE, BDB, TLOT, TLNT,...)

The only regret is I couldn't work well how to study original languages, fastly and with curiosity. This is the only regret about the logos app, and this is the only reason why I recently bought the Accordance.com package, and now I use for the Hebrew/Greek works, together as a companion with my huge Logos library. The complement each other, and it works smoothly now.

I really miss prayer lists on the iPad. That seems like such a no brainer in being a desirable need, as away from the desk it would be nice to pray going through my prayer list....

I'd think Prayer Lists makes sense on a mobile more so than a desktop. And when you google the Apple store, prayer seems to be pretty important. At least to developers anyway (can't see the unit sales). There's also an Islam app that has a prayer section. I thought that was interesting (though Jeremiah's no-god discussion may apply on that app).

I'd think there's either an app or expansion of the present ones, that would fit well between 'Logos' and Proclaim (ie believers' daily life).

Prayer list support IS indeed planned for mobile. It may be in a stand-alone app, as Denise mentioned, or it may be integrated in the existing apps, I'm not 100% sure yet. But it is on the roadmap.

Here are my issues , that are not be covered in the thread:

1. Logos advertises that Logos for IOS runs Logos software, it does not state you must have a wifi connection to do anything more than have an e-reader. Synching across devices is a web action as expected, but to have nothing more than an e-reader without wi-fi, is totally unexpected.

2. To say an iPAD AIR is "not powerful enough to run Logos" is ludicrous . Not so and, if it couldn't, them Logos should not advertise that it can.

3. I have other Bible software on the iPad and iPhone "that are full featured" on or off line".

4. Passage Guide etc, are supposed to be part of the core software, it is advertised as part of Logos for IOS, I just looked again- I see no disclaimer telling us that : The tools of Logos will not work on mobile devices unless connected to the internet.

5. Had I known, I might well have bought an iPad with 4g capabilities so that while traveling, Logos would not be worthless to me as a tool.

iOS devices DO run "Logos software." iOS devices DO NOT run "Logos 5," nor has Logos ever claimed that it does. I agree that there is confusion around Logos nomenclature about base packages... i.e. a "Logos 5" base package runs on iOS.

It isn't ludicrous. Think about it. Even if Logos could port the full L5 engine, do you REALLY think that an iPad can download and index all those resources? Most users could not even download their entire library with only a 16 GB device. An iPad is not a "computer." It is a "second device."

Nothing posted next to "guides" that indicates you cannot use it unless on wifi.

Funny thing, Accordance has no problems running a fully featured "iOS version" of their software, without wifi.

Of course, you have to decide which modules you want to download rather than have in the cloud, thats true for both companies.

I am a very unhappy customer, that is very, very tired of Logos behaviors and thinking they get a pass because people think they are a Christian company. If they want to be Christian about things, they need to be more forthright and honest than anyone else.

There should be a big note all over they place indicating there are "no tools unless connected to internet".
That is their responsibility as any court would declare.

I get the feeling Chuck doesn't read all the forums. Tsk, tsk. Everyone knows, before you 'buy', you need to research the whole Logos site for any tidbits the marketing team kind of left out. Then come to the forum and put your flak helmet on, and ask. This is just (Logos) common sense.

Sorry Mike but I disagree. The Logos marketing is not clear on ths point at all. You are thinking like a user in the know and reading a whole lot into those words that a person with no knowledge of the product would not read into it. Logos does have a lot to answer Fahrenheit it comes to marketing on many occasions. OP did not have unrealistics expectations, only those created by the marketing. Watch the videos no mention of having tone connected!

The marketing and other users sometimes create needs I didn't have.
There are much more people thinking AND saying on the forums that You should buy all kinds of things. It's more rare to get to know opinions on what exactly out of everything that is recommended, to buy, as well as get traction for some collections, modern era Bibles and improvement of existing books:

I have both Libronix, Logos and Accordance, and it's hard to know which books to buy and use in which one.

But I don't have unrealistic expectations, so I've been positively surprised about the ease and thereby also spent more than I will read or fully utilize.

EDIT: no I don't have an iPad, have not been thinking I would need one and have not been willing to support Apple and I still hesitate to. Will perhaps use Gk on an iPad with Accordance sometime in the future, at least a few years from now.

I would suggest you think of suggest you turn on hot spot and link your iPad to your iPhone. That way as long as you have your phone and a signal you will be able to have access. I will agree with you at least a basic Passage guide should be a core feature not requiring the internet but I am not sure it will ever be integrated into Logos mobile.

Exactly my point. And all these features we are waiting on are NOT where Logos makes their profit. While I am sure Logos works on these promised features, they are evidently not a very high priority. There is nothing surprising or unethical about the relationship between priority and profit. It is a fact of life in the business world.

But we have been waiting for years, and I grew tired of it. When I found an alternative way of achieving what I needed Logos to do, I jumped on it.

As a non-professional slowly having started with Grammar in the Fall 2012 and bought OLL on April 19. 2012, doing English grammar in the Spring 2014 and thereafter first Classical Gk, I can afford to wait and see how things develop - what will be the best route. I will however hesitate to upgrade the Logos software. Not all of the L5 databases convince me - I would not pay for them all and I expect this to be the case in future versions too.

Due to that I didn't start as young enough, it's also hard to determine right now how much I will actually learn.

I don't know about the assertion 'these features aren't where they make their profit'. One big reason I still use Laridian is (a) it's quick (maybe famiarity) but (b) it's got Bible comparison and commentary passage guides off-line. It's not remotely in Logos' world but it is simple to use.

Bob says the 'store' is where the competition is. If you sell electronic books, the reader is often the first comparison.

In fact, I personally couldnt wait for a easy quick way to study original languages, like strong's number and so...so I jumped and bought an accordance package.

Now I'm happily using both logos and accordance for each one with its use. Logos is my library, devotional, daily study, dig, discipleship and reading. Accordance for dictionarynd hard greek/hebrew work. No hard time anymore.

The whole claim that an iPad is not powerful enough is a different question than one of space. I pad is plenty powerful enough and Accordance screams, as do Olive Tree and others.

Logos is just way behind the curve in the software. Way ahead on resources.

I was just "shocked" the advertising and videos didn't indicate the problem i ran into. Logos will say: It's free software and, it is, so guess one cannot complain about a free e-reader when offline.

Yes, Logos is way ahead in resources - although I sure wish I would get that New Interpreter's Dictionary on the Bible which is on pre-pub - a lot of more orders needed! I'll have to use the NIDB as printed matter meanwhile (got it on a sale brand new in the summer, from Cokesbury). One Bible dictionary is included in L5 Bronze, and one smaller in Accordance Starter but those are often insufficient - better than nothing and I guess they weren't too big additional costs when they were included.

I've heard others too say that Accordance would be good for hard Greek work (possibly Hebrew too I don't do that language so I wouldn't know) but I will wait until NA29 is released to get a Gk NT. I mainly use the copy of the UBS Translator's Handbook which I got used and New English Translation of the Septuagint when I'm using Accordance.

I'm having a second thought, I really don't think I'll afford an iPad for the next 10 years (for Accordance).

Fr. Matheny - If you have a smart phone with a "tethering" feature could help you when you are not in range of a wifi? I realize it is not the ideal solution but it could work for you in some instances.

That's the same reason I'm still investing in OliveTree. They have a Passage Guide that works well offline, as well as intuitive Strong's lookup on Bible words.

Logos, please take note! Even though you're giving away the mobile apps for free, there is indeed money on the table that could have been yours if you had invested more heavily in strengthening your mobile apps' functionality (beyond the recent UI facelift).
