I once read that this little work was Samuel Simon Schmucker's most popular work.  This PB is of the 3rd edition, and the first few pages are actually book reviews - all quite glowing.  This work seems to have been popular with many Americans who were afraid of those Catholics who were coming over.  This work is more of an attack on Roman Catholicism than it is a statement of Lutheran, or generic Protestant views.  Source is https://archive.org/details/discourseincom00schm

Some of the footnotes are quite extensive.  One footnote (which starts on page 130) actually has footnotes to itself.  To deal with this, I inserted these notes to notes into parenthesis.
