Schmucker - Church of the Redeemer
Samuel Simon Schmucker was probably the most important figure in the General Synod for a long time. And yet his Definite Platform was rejected by almost all bodies, and when he had retired, he was replaced by a vigorous critic. But he still had supporters, and was the head of a historical association that met in association with the General Synod meetings.
And so he wrote a back-up presentation in case the speaker wasn't prepared. Since he didn't need it, it was shared with some friends afterward who wanted it to be published.
In many ways it is not that original. It is what he had been saying for a generation. But it connects many of his themes, and speaks of his ecumenical work.
