I have Gary Lands book (first ed.) in my library and it is an easy read, while not being simplistic at the same time, it does an excellent job on the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

George Knight is good in documenting information and placing it in its historical context.

The 150 year history of the Seventh-day Adventist church is both complex and controversial. Combining an objective historical analysis and an anthology of primary sources, this collection adds a clear and complete history of the Adventist church to your library. With this collection, you’ll be well equipped to respond to skeptics and answer questions of your own. Gary Land’s volume fleshes out the church’s founding and provides insight into the denomination’s distinguishing characteristics, while George R. Knight’s work opens a window into the Church’s vigorous historical work in international missions.
