dynamic pricing on top of academic pricing

I understand that academic pricing is a tremendous discount for those of us who qualify. But honestly I have trouble seeing why you wouldn't put dynamic pricing on top of academic pricing. Looking at the Anglican Diamond package, I see no dynamic pricing discount (my academic discount is greater), even though I have spent hundreds of dollars working on the ICC set, and I have also bought a few N. T. Wright volumes that are included here. I would love this package, but it's price is just a little out of my range, and I have a hard time counting the money I already spent on ICC and N.T. Wright as all lost. If I buy this package I would effectively be paying for these books twice. Can't Logos help out us academics who have been slowing working away at a package like this?

Short answer: the why not is presumably like any other company. Staples, Best Buy, Amazon, etc, generally won't let you price match and then use a coupon, or use two coupons of the same type, e.g. a % off. It works out better for you if you can, but it hurts their bottom line.

Case in point - if I had bought resources from Logos 5 Silver, and then decided to buy it under academic pricing, then it could work like this.

____ resources = $100 discount.

Academic pricing is ~$500, half of the $1000 list price.

So in this case I'd be asking Logos to give me half off and then another $100 because of purchased resources, to make the whole thing 60% off? That's just not realistic.

I agree with David. According to my understanding, dynamic pricing is not a discount in the true sense. Dynamic discount is just recognizing previous purchases. Academic discount is suppose to help students etc. I also feel the two is suppose to work together!

Also, I am not certain that Academic Discount is always 50%, perhaps someone could confirm?

This is correct. Academic Pricing isn't always 50% off. It does depend on the resources but sometimes with AD you are getting things at pre-pub prices...When I got my base package it was 15% for a new user and then with the AD it was an additional 15% off. Pretty good deal...

Hey David- I can empathize with you. (not paying for two resources) often the logic is that you get a big bundle and that is the discount....Some users were saying that purchasing a particular base package didn't make the price drop even though some individual items cost alot of money. One user posted that it was disappointing. That's why for me, I think that just getting the big bundle i.e. Nicot/nicnt is better than buying them individually and then wanting to purchase the set. I purchased an EEC commentary and there is no dynamic pricing on the rest of the set for me...

But you can always call customer service maybe they can work something out.

My point with the 60% off discount is not that the percentage is always that high but rather that for a company to constantly stack discounts is typically unsustainable. Few to no other retailers do this, at least ones that are staying afloat or especially ones that are making money.

If you think you're going to buy a bundle, wait, and buy the bundle. If you're not sure, buy a few books and see how you like the series/author(s). That way you're not wasting money, e.g. buying the whole $1700 NICOT/NT bundle when you really need 6 volumes (say ~$300 worth). And that way you don't buy half of them at $50 ea and then decide to get the whole bundle and get a much lower discount, e.g. pay more than you needed to.

Personal example: I bought Logos 3 Gold about 4.5 years ago. Had I waited, I could have probably gotten just the books I wanted/use regularly now in a lower level package, e.g. Logos 5 Silver. Then I would have saved about $1000 vs what I've actually spent over the last four years. But, my last year of seminary would have been a lot harder without some of the helps in Logos.

So I don't necessarily regret the purchase, but going forward, I feel like you have to pick between buying the 'best' volumes on a book, e.g. commentaries, or getting large bundles that you may not use. Mixing and matching those two approaches generally costs you more money. And I don't think it's realistic for Logos to let us 'double-dip', e.g. academic + dynamic. Also, I hope that everyone doesn't get greedy. Many of us have access to libraries that scholars two hundred years ago couldn't imagine a single individual owning.

To sum up, you may regret some purchases, or wish some things are cheaper, but there are others who have certainly spent more money, and for the most part they're not complaining. I'm not saying that you are, just saying - be glad you have the academic discount, as some of us would love to be in your shoes as far as access to that level of discount.

Hey Daniel- thanks for sharing your example. I know that in seminary I had one strategy in purchasing Logos books but now that I'm out I have another. I suppose it's just where you are at, what you can afford, and what you think that you need...You are right those AD discounts probably aren't sustainable but they are good when you have them. Daniel, I think that you perhaps misunderstood the OP. He is not trying to mix and match. In my opinion Dynamic Pricing should not be seen as a special discount: Here is why

Off course the special discount prices is no longer valid, but it was combined with Dynamic Pricing. In my opinion there is no "double dipping" here. The OP bought some ICC volumes fair and square in the past. All he is asking is that the volumes he already bought is subtracted according to the promise made by Logos "Never pay for the same title twice". You probably would have saved. But if you also decided to buy the Logos 5 Silver Package today (or the Diamond for that matter) the books you already own (Logos 3 Gold and other purchases) will be subtracted via Dynamic Pricing. The OP is not trying to pick between buying the "best" volumes. He wants to buy a large bundle - Anglican Diamond package. He is not complaining about buying extra books he does not need. He simply already bought a few of the books that is included in the bundle he is planning to buy. If you were looking to buy the same package, you would also want you current Logos 3 Gold library to be Dynamically subtracted where applicable since you already paid for them. That is not double dipping.

Regarding the Academic Discount:it is a very nice feature. Just remember that to get "Access to that level of discount" you need to be a registered student at an acknowledged academic institution. Tuition fees are anything but cheap. Logos help those who further their education by offering an extra special discount. You can always enroll at an academic institution to qualify for Academic Discount, but somehow I think it would not be a cheap option. Think how much books you could buy at Logos for the tuition fees [:D]

If soup is on sale at the grocers for 10% off, and you need 10 cans of soup for a thing you're making (and have 5 already, you should only have to buy the 5 cans you lack, and should still be able to get the 10% off from the grocer.

Its one thing for the sale to have a minimum purchase required, IE to get the 10% you have to be purchasing 10 cans. Its another for them to say (when you get to the counter) hmm perhaps we shall withhold the discount on your purchase.

If they are going to have policies that cancel the academic discount - that's fine, just have it in writing. To do otherwise feels a little capricious. My best price was the dynamic +15% - something I am grateful for.

Think how much books you could buy at Logos for the tuition fees

My tuition is about 5k a year. Those who attend from outside my tradition (and there are some) pay around 10k a year.

My school is comparatively speaking was cheaper than my undergrad program, and cheaper than many competing M.Div programs.

My PhD (which comes next Lord willing) will cost around 15k - which is less expensive.

If I browse all base packages, they all show the same percentage discount except for SDA, which has a 15% discount. The others are all what I have come to expect base packages to be for us academics (I am not sharing that number here so as not to make those without the discount jealous). The fact that it is the same percentage whether I get starter or diamond tells me that that number doesn't take into account how many of the resources I have. In fact, it shows me that same percentage discount even for the packages I do have, though I cannot add them to the cart. This confirms that what I see when I am browsing does not take into account dynamic pricing.

For other products I see one number when I browse and then (if I have part of the product) a lower number when I click on the item to see that product's page. For the Anglican Diamond it is still the same discounted price as what I saw on the browse page ... at the same percentage as every other base package (but SDA).

I study in two uni at the same time, and I don't qualify for Academic Discount. Just sayin'. And Academic Discount doesn't appeal to me as books or software bought with that discount can't ever be willed, given away or sold - which I understand very well why. Also, while in seminary having a library I can travel to fairly cheap and not having much time left over (having to work at 25% pace of full-time also), undermines the need for buying and reading additional books. I seriously doubt I will even have time to look for what books to buy.

If you have a bundle of products A, B, and C. For academic pricing, you take a look and say I can discount product A by 10%, B by 40%, and C by 90% (public domain). You combine the discounted prices and come up with a sale price for the bundle.

What happens when you apply dynamic pricing when a user already owns only A or only C? It can be calculated, but for large bundles, esp base packages, it seems problematic if I'm looking at it right?

They do this with all sorts of products. They just had a sale on the ICC for 25% off. If I would search for ICC I could see the set advertised at 25% off. But when I would click on the link or try to add it to my cart it would enter my cart with a lower price and even a greater savings, because I already own a dozen volumes of the set. They have a formula to calculate this, though I don't quite understand the formula.

The same thing is true of the standard base packages / upgrades. I cannot upgrade my Logos 5 Silver to Logos 5 Portfolio for anything less than the academic price that I see when I just look at the Logos 5 Portfolio page. I could upgrade to Gold for less, but only because my dynamic pricing exceeds my academic pricing. So if I go to the Logos 5 Gold product page, I see one price, but when I click on "See your custom price," it gives me a price that is 1/3 of what is on the product page. But for Logos 5 Portfolio both prices are the same (academic vs. custom price). Doesn't matter that I spent hundreds of dollars upgrading to Logos 5 a couple years ago. If I want to upgrade further that hundreds of dollars is gone.

For what it's worth, we are always on the side of our customers. It's the only smart way to grow a business. Every policy we have that feels restrictive is some legally or financially necessary protection against specific (and sometimes imagined) abuses that would make our business model untenable. If it's reasonable, doesn't kill our business, and is pro-customer, we're going to be okay with it.

I only hope all of our heirs value this investment in Bible study resources as much as we do! :-)

Any way the essence of the point (and perhaps this is my nationality showing) if you want to keep it safe badly enough, you'll find a way. If not, you won't.

There are floor safes, wall safes, picture frame safes, I saw a book hollowed out that locks with a key for 20$ at Harbor freight - and scores of other traditional and non-traditional ways to securely store your information.

In the end, if you have a will, it can be contested and your kids may end up selling your books anyway. Do your best for now to keep the information safe and yet accessible, leave a list of what you want done, and if you have the respect of your family, they will respect your last wishes as well.

The alternative is worse - you die without a will, and having left no one a way to access your library the licenses sit forever dormant of use to no one.

At least in your scenario your children were able to gain some benefit; which is indeed better than nothing.

I don't want to say too much, but access codes can be hidden in such a way that a particular individual that you trust should find it if something happens.

My best friend (whose older than me) knows where the list of my usernames and passwords are should something happen to me prior to having a will.

I trust him not to invade my privacy, if something happens he can pass the information on to my parents, or siblings (or frankly, use them for his own purposes - with the exception of Logos which I have other plans for). One day that will all be handled by a will, but until then this works. If he dies first, then I can find another individual whom I trust.

He can probably guess my passwords and secret answers. We've known each other since I was 12.

At the end of the day you'll have to do what's best for you. It sounds like you thought it through and you know that the option to will it to someone is there, even if you decide not to use it because it's not in your best interest...All the best.

I would be very very lucky if I ever get any kind of friends who can take care of this when I grow older. Right now, none of my friends or relatives are in any kind of touch with each other. That means that if I would suddenly die (at any point, I'm not talking about the near future), very few would find out - or even try to find out, that I have died - no-one would be telling them and it's not the normal thing to do to check whether a person has died. Almost everyone would assume that I have just started to ignore them - perhaps some even being unaware of that the life-expectancy age is not that high (I'm born in Finland, and male).

By saying lucky I mean that it looks unlikely I will get suitable friends to take care of this. And I don't base that merely on what it looks like right now and has looked like. Few people want to be close friends - I would have to have something in common with them. One person who would be suitable, my brother (not the youngest but the middle one), is so busy all the time. He is not a believer but he is nice to me. He is rarely in touch with me, but I would expect him to be aware of whether I'm alive or not - although I can't be sure of that when I gradually have fewer and fewer relatives. Most relatives are scattered throughout the Nordic, the U.S. and Germany.

I cringe when I think about that I also eventually have to find a friend (and preferably not the same person who would take care of the usernames and passwords as it would be a surprise if they are separate persons) whom to give my library. For now, I have no real book-lover friends of the kind who are really grateful for additional books. I have a new friend, but she prefers printed matter since she learns much more easily by writing notes in the books by hand, than with a keyboard.

If you die without a will, your children get everything, If you die with a will, your children nevertheless get at least half. There is no possible way to will that away from them. The only options I can think of to disinherit them are a) to die destitute, b) to die after your children are already dead, or c) to move to another country with different laws, and change citizenship.

(I'd better shut up about what I think about a father who speaks about his children the way you do. The screen might catch fire. I hope they never see it.[:#])

I have a big home full of stuff and papers, there is no way a random person doing an inventory will find a "will". It's basically impossible to move - my income is WAY too low for a new contract and even though I'm very soon starting to make more money it will make no difference. I'm looking at being stuck in this same apartment - which is very carefully chosen and I'm happy with, for a lifetime:

Destitute? That is an excellent option. If I have anything left when I get terminally ill (I will have little left, pensions are extremely low - below average income of the inhabitant of the world) I just bring my laptop to the hospital and transfer the money to the best friend I can think of.
I will probably use left-over money for a garage to keep an a-traktor (car with the top-speed of 20 MPH). I have pedicab parts lying on the ground so if not storing a car I can store them aswell. I currently have only a motorcycle space in the warm garage for functioning pedicabs but not all of them fit in the space together with my moped and 125 cubic centimeter = 7.6 cubic inch motorcycle even though my space could contain a few more mopeds if it weren't for the two pedicabs in the space:

Of course none of that matters if a meteor strikes you in the head, knocking you into traffic in front of a delivery truck, which then knocks you into a manhole leaving you unconscious to drown.

Or if your pedicab explodes while you're riding it.

Or if struck by lighting (living in the Lightning capital of the world as I do you think about these things).

Or if killed by a "storm of the century".

Or if an errant geneticist accidently brings a T-rex back to life which then ravages the countryside.

My point is that accidents happen, and having an emergency plan is wise. We are not always capable of disseminating our things in our final moments.
